Subject: BB King - One Kind Favor From: Wesley S Date: 23 Sep 08 - 01:23 PM BB Kings newest CD "One Kind Favor" is easily one of my favorites from him. I hope you'll give it a listen. Here's why: 1 – Producer T-Bone Burnett – He's given BB a neo-retro sound that shows him off to his best advantage. Here's how: 2- Will Lee on STRING bass not electric. It makes a world of difference 3 – Jim Keltner on drums. He's always tasteful – but it sounds like they've moved the mics back from the drums to give it a "roomier" sound. 4 – Dr John on piano adds some real New Orleans feel esp on the title track. 5 – Horn arrangements by Geoff Muldaur and Darrell Leonard. I can only describe these as lush. It sounds to my untrained ear like the focus is on the baritone sax and trombone instead of shrill trumpets. Overall very effective. 6 – Songwriters – Blind Lemon Jefferson, Chester Burnett, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Lonnie Johnson and the Mississippi Sheiks. Get the picture? 7 – The mix. Most producers would have mixed BB very high in the mix – he's a guitar hero right? But by mixing him down just a little { believe me he's always audible } it adds tension and makes BB sound like a part of the band.I found it to be very effective. I hope you'll give it a listen your self and see what you think. BB Kings voice is starting to fade a little bit to my ears – not as strong as it used to be. But overall I think this will be one of the recordings he'll be remembered for. See what you think. |
