PLEASE don't hit me! I'm not trying to trivialize this thread. I'm finding it fascinating and informative. It's just that Don's mention of the "Corries" thread, reminded me that I tried to defend them against stiff opposition.
Rick

Ah yes, and if they don't do any gay/lesbian/bi songs, at least they do some fairly sexist ones ... - Susanne :-)

Rick,

"Johnny Lad" a verse as sung by the Corries

"Johnny was a Bonnie Lad until they took him in,

He's had the operation and now folks call him Mary."

"An' wi' you an' wi' you an' wi' you My Johnny Lad

I'll dance the buckles off my shoes for you My Jonny Lad"

Dammit Don, couldn't they at least rhyme it? I'm losing patience with those boys. (no offence to the late Roy W.)

Suzanne, how right you are. Up until probably the late 70s I'd be hard pressed to name a "guy" band that didn't. Just another reason that I admire the guts of Cathy Fink. She didn't take the coffee house singer-songwriter route. She waded right into the Bluegrass world, and has stories that would curl your hair.

Speaking of Kathy Fink, how 'bout Karen Mackay? She was pretty out of the closet on stage, but it must be 20 years since I've heard her. (For that matter, Big Mama Thornton was pretty out of the closet on stage, at least the one time I heard her, at the old Alice's, on Wrightwood, in chicago.)

Robin Flower?

Casse Culver was on the old Femme label.

The new title of this thread made me think of The Corries singing of Marie's Wedding.

I now ask myself, who was it she was marrying?

the best and most loving rendition of mairi's wedding i've ever heard is done by a lesbian in minneapolis, if that helps.

katlaughing,

have you heard Jez Lowe's Parish Notices, from his new CD. This isn't traditional as he wrote it himself, but it is folk. It's about the reaction of a town to a lesbian couple who move into the area. I can post the words if you want.

No, SueH, I didn't know about that one. Yes, would you please post the lyrics? It might take me a day or two to get back to you. We have our bug Wyo. Culture Fest tomorrow and my sister, bet, & I are debuting as "Folkfyre". Thanks!

Good luck with your gig, kat!

Gives me time to find the words, I'll post them over the weekend.

And I hope your weather is better than ours, earlier in the week it was about 25 degrees (centigrade, that is) - today it was 13. Just in time for the weekend!

Subject: Lyr Add: THE PARISH NOTICES (Jez Lowe)^^
From: SueH
Date: 13 Jun 99 - 05:56 AM

Hi Katlaughing

Here are the words to The Parish Notices.....

THE PARISH NOTICES

by Jez Lowe, from CD of same name

They have no help & no hindrance to give
They only speak as they find
They have their own lives to live & let live
And their own business to mind
Their cards are played close to the heart
But when apples are spilled from their cart
The parish notices

And so when two lovers came here to dwell
Beneath their blue summer skies
Women folk started to whisper & well
Men folk began to despise
There are places such love may belong
But when it's here & so bold & so strong
The parish notices

Who are you, good women & true?
Why aren't you welcome here?
Who are you, good women & true?
Why do you cause such fear?

And as their bright harvest spoiled in the rain
The scythe of sickness came down
And one alone in her grief still remained
To hear no comforting sound
Just gather your goods & be gone
And take your damn plague from this town
She laughed with her back to the ropes
And she spat on their street & she hopes
The parish notices

The info inside Jez's CD cover says - 'this tells the true & tragic story of 2 young lovers persecuted by an ignorant & frightened community.' I'm not too good at getting music down from CD, but I can probably get someone else to do it for me if you want it - or Jez might let me have it.

Hope your gig went well....

SueH

It's fine, Sue. Thanks very much. It's really powerful I plan to share the words with some of my lesbian friends.

Thanks for the well wishes on Folkfyre's first "gig". It went fine; neither one of us choked; we didn't do the nerves tempo increase; and everyone seems to've enjoyed it. We've unofficially signed on for next year, if I am still living here, then.

I posted more baout it in one of the other threads, can't remember which one, it was late last night. Anyway, the best part, for both of us, was when a little girl of about 4 yrs. old, in a Scotland t-shirt, big brown eyes and beautiful dark hair, came up to us with her grandma to tell us she really liked the songs we sang. That really made it worth it.

I guess we didn't do too badly. We added two songs, Friday night, one we knew sorta and was easy; the other was fairly new to us and took some practise, but we both felt good about it. I really was pleased when I introduced my sister to a friend who'd heard us. She didn't know we were sisters; when she heard, she said "no wonder your voices blend so well".

It was a lot of fun! Sorry, if I've taken this thread too off sunject.

Thanks, again, Sue.
