Hi, I remember gigging with the Jugular Vein. I was in a duo called Windfall. We were regulars at the Nag's Head Clapham and I still have a poster from a gig we did with JV "Greek Week" Marc Ellington was playing also. There was a Scottish trio who used to play there called LEVER. Does anyone know what happened to them?
Also a great Scotsman Bill Knox who ran the Folk Club. Just found out Tom Edwards died. Great guy that was around with the JV then

A couple of additions. The candle factory opposite the Nag's Head was called Price's Candles, I used to drive past it every day en route to work in Battersea.
On the subject of jug bands, I note Terry Silver mentioned the Philharmonious, in which my old mate Pete Ballan played, he's still around and living in Alnwick. However the jug band I remember best from that time was the Leveé Breakers, with Henry VIII on jug, Mac MacCann on guitar and phono fiddle, and Beverly who later married John Martyn, on vocals. Can't remember all of the lineup sadly.

Hiya John - good to see you here! I was over at the Charlwood singaround a couple of days ago - now at "The Charlwood" (ex-"Greyhound"). A good night, packed with musicians - Martin Wyndham-Read and Iris Bishop, among others, and both Colin and Sue Gates in fine form.

Lots of jug-type bands around in London in the late '60s and early '70s. The outfit I was in was called "The Egbert Sousé All Stars", and varied, depending on who turned up, from between 4 and 8 players! Sitters-in who popped in from time to time included Diz Disley and Bob Kerr, and our residency was the Redan, on the corner of Queensway and Westbourne Grove. One of the first floor flats on the block across the road was the home of John Mayall, and we often used to see him lowering gear down from the balcony down to the Ford Transit parked on the corner.

Enough - I shall be dribbling into my Wincarnis next...

a late arrival. Only found this today, because last night I heard a song about the Champs-Elysee and recognised it as a lift from "Waterloo Road" which I'd remembered Lionel Morton recording and Jugular Vein playing on their trips to Folk at The Chequers in Horley, where I was a resident. This thread revived loads of memories, so thanks.

Remember agreeing with JV that The Nag's Head in Battersea was the only place in the country where you had to shut the windows for fresh air - there was an adjacent gin factory. I went there in 1968 during its life as "The Blue Horizon Club", to see Fleetwood Mac, Duster Bennett and Gordon Smith.

Good to see you posts Will Fly in all these years, I hadn't known so much of your back story.

I remember The Four Pennies on Thank Your Lucky Stars, also performing Leadbelly's "Black girl"

Happy days

Sad to report that bass player Tom Edwards passed away early Monday morning.
My friend Veronica reports that he got up to go to loo, couldn't breath so sat back on bed and died. No details about funeral as it is sudden death so things will be delayed. End of an era.

I remember Jugular Vein playing at the Nag's Head Battersea & also at the Marquis of Clanricarde, Southwick Street, Paddington. They were legendary. They used to do a number called Talking World War 2 Blues or somesuch among other memorable turns. I wish that I could buy a CD of their music to annoy the cat with. They were great days.

Hi,
Only just read these posts having tried to trace my lost youth. I played football for The Nag's Head Folk Club Football Club in the early seventies with many ne'erdowells of that parish and we were quite a handy side. Tom, the bass player was our treasurer and Mike Deegan, guitarist, was an accomplished centre back. Every season we played a charity game in Amberley and took Jugular Vein or another local band to entertain the masses in the evening session. Max and "Muff" weren't too involved in the footy but we often had boozy, musical Sunday afternoons with the aromatic vapours of Gartons' Glucose Factory taking the enamel off your teeth. Another fan was Al Cooper of Temperance 7 fame who hosted our drinking sessions a few times at his pad on Wandsworth Common. If anyone knows details of Mike Deegan's circumstances I'd appreciate a contact.
Cheers,
Garry Henesy

Hi

Nice to see the thread revived and to see John Foxen mention the Nags Head opposite the candle factory, that completes the trio of Nags Heads I used to frequent when I lived at Vauxhall. Anyone know what happened to Sue? she ran the folk club in the Clapham Common Old Town Nags Head before moving to the Wandsworth Rd Nags Head, now a so called trendy wine bar. A certain Dave Evans used to play guitar and sing around the same venues, I wonder if that is the same D E playing drums in the One More Time Jazz Band, we all look so different now, another regular was George Greenow or Greenaway? Mike Deigan was often there but then he duetted with a lady cellist.

I remember seeing the Vein back in about 1976/77 at the Nag's Head opposite the candle factory.
I was delighted to find that bass player Tom has posted some rare footage of the band on kid's TV show Magpie on youtube.
Here's Laughing At Life and Lady Madonna
I'd been tipped off about them by former member Richard Bartram, who went on to form String Jam which featured Mike Piggot on violin (he went on to do a lot of work with Ralph McTell). These days Richard is concentrating on making beautiful guitars, mandolins and bouzoukis - although many of us would like to hear him play more.

Hi Pete and all interested mudcatters
Back on the old JV subject, nice to see the site is up and running again, anyway! MP3's would be great, I recently managed to win a copy of Waterloo Road LP on ebay, I can't play vinyl anymore so I had to be naughty and get someone to discify it for me, it's a great piece of work but I am biased, very enjoyable and I would like to hear more nudge nudge! There are plenty of vids on youtube featuring Max Emmons fronting the "One More Time" jazz band at brentford and a couple of the JV playing on the tv show Magpie in the 1970's. I now live in a little Norfolk village called Mundesley, we have a festival week every August, this year one of the acts was The Temperence Seven with Mike Diegan, I went along but didn't get to speak with him. I remember Mike before he was a Juggie he played guitar and sung along side a lady cellist.
Hope somebody is still watching, would be nice to hear some more.

Hi folks,
How splendid that you all remember the JV. I was one of the founding four and played guitar, washboards, harmonica, kazoo, swannee whistle, penny whistle and occasional ukulele. I also sang (sort of) and was the front man for the duration of my first term with the band. I'm currently writing a brief history of the fist few years on my blog, which oldguit found back in october. The address, if you're interested is http://adventuresofvoltarol.blogspot.com and I welcome comments, contacts and any memories of the band that you might have. In fact, oldguit chanced on my blog back in october and apparently emailed me but I never received the email or I would have answered, honest! So - I can be contacted on this address - voltarol42@gmail.com and I'll be happy to hear from you. The JV history postings started this month and I'm about to post the third episode this very afternoon. I had occassion to phone Muff Murfet to clarify a point and he put me on to this site, hence this communication. Incidentally, with the rest of the band's permission, I hope to upload the original and previously unreleased LP as a free MP3.

Well such interest in J.V. think I'll wind the gramaphone up and play that masterpiece recorded at studio 2, Abbey Road if I can find a needle. Muff Murfet, (Jug) was the baby of the band and I have just returned from London after celebrating his 65th birthday, Mike Deighan has played banjo with the Temperance Seven since 1979 and many other jazz bands. Max Emmons is very busy on the London jazz scene and you can see and hear him on You Tube just put his name in.Hey Splottman, I am not resident in the Canaries ( I wish) but here in Splott, so come and take me down the "Oak" it's nearer than the Nags Head, Battersea.

Felicitations to you all,

Welsh Tom

I recall Jugular Vein and think they were occasionally booked at the Enterprise Chalk Farm. Of course around the same time was a jug band called Jug Trust also gigging so I may have muddled the two. Although I definitely saw them both in the late 60's and they may well have both done the same clubs.

Glad to see so many of you remember Jugular Vein.A short history. We started playing in 1966/67 mainly around Uxbridge,Southall,Hayes, as well as The Nags Head.In fact there were two pubs in the Clapham area that we played in called the Nags.I think the one most of you refer to would be the Nags in York Road Battersea. The other, now a wine bar was in Clapham Old Town. The original line up was myself on jugs and swanee whistle,Richard Bartrum on guitar, mandolin and vocals,Max Emmons on cornet, guitar, ukulele, harmonica and vocals,Pete Turner washboard, tin whistle, guitar, and vocals. After a few years Pete and Richard left and were replaced by Mike Deighan. The J.V.stayed as a three piece for a few years until we were joined by Tom Edwards on bass and vocals. We played on a regular basis until 1979.Since then we got together a couple of times a year.for many years we made an annual appearance at the Battersea Beer Festival. Our last appearance there was 2002.We have talked about a band reunion at some time but so far nothing definate thas been fixed. The L.P. mentioned was recorded at Abbey Road in 1976 but was not released until 1978.There was a previous L.P. with the old line up which was recorded by Bill Leader. It was never issued.I think Richard Bartrum still has a copy of the tape.Max and Mike are still playing on a regular basis.Tom is living in Cardiff and still plays from time to time as well as being Sec.to the south wales M.U. Pete is living In Cornwall and is still very much involved in music.Richard still plays and lives near Ely and is a highly regarded maker of guitars and other stringed instruments.I still play a little concertina and mondolin, mainly for my own amusment and to upset the cat.

Regards Muff.

A bit of a breakthrough

I found a blog by one of the founder members of Jugular Vein, from back in my day, the 60's. He calls himself Volterol and refers to the other three founder members as: Rev. B. Sprules "Muff Murfet" (The mad jug player I remember so well),Fingers Bartram and Fred Kettle "Max Emmons" It's a great blog called "Adventures in the Din Trade" you may like to check it out. E-mails are invited, I emailed yesterday but haven't had a reply yet. Will keep you posted.

From Splott Man"

"had a quick look at the LP this morning, here are the basic details.

Titled Waterloo Road, issued 1978 on Plastic Fantastic, No 3001. Recorded at Abbey Rd no less.

The line up in this instance was:

Mike Deigham (? - sorry, can't read my own writing!) - V, Uke, Gtr, Bj, Kz.
Max Emmons - V, Uke, Gtr, Cornet, Harmonica, Kz.
Tom Edwards - Bs, Bs Bj, Backing Vocals.
Barry Murfet - Fryco Jug, Conc, Swanee Whistle, Recorders."

Mike Deighan was the guy you're thinking of. I used to gig and jam with him in Lancaster (where we both lived) in the mid-60s. He was and is a tremendously talented string player. I was just starting out on guitar when we met up and he taught me a huge amount. He also broke me, the hard way, into getting used to the musician's weird, often wicked and off-the-wall sense of humour... Mike played guitar and wrote songs for a 60s band from Blackburn called the Four Pennies. He played banjo with various mainstream outfits and moved down to London about 1966. He played with Caleb Quaye (as a duo) for a while, then with a guitarist called Dave Duker (a member of the Duechar brewing family), and is now living in Hampshire and playing banjo with the current version of the Temperance Seven. Mike wrote "Waterloo Road" and many other fine songs. Catch him if you can.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to dig out the LP Splott Man.

This must be a subsequent incarnation of the J V. I thought I remembered them talking about releasing in the mid to late 60's when Fred and Dave were on board, maybe it never came to fruition. I'm impressed with Abbey Road!

Thanks again

If anyone else knows anything about the Jugular Vein please let us know.

I remember them well from my south-east days.

The double bass player was Tommy Edwards who later moved back to Cardiff and joined the Hennessys. He's retired now and lives a lot of the time in the Canaries (for his health). He occasionally turns up at the BBC club in Cardiff and can usually be persuaded to sit in or perform in his own right.

I've got their LP, I'll dig it out and post info from it.

I don't recall Jugular Vein but I do remember the Yetties. Apparently they're still going. I can't actually remember if I ever went to Clanfolk, but I did go to the folk club at The Royal Oak in Bishop's Bridge Road a couple of times. One time, I was singing and Alex Campbell walked in, shouting 'Hell, yeah!' and making a lot of noise. Later he came up and apologised for the disturbance and said he liked the 'Robin Hood' song I did but that the American one was shite. The rest of the evening is lost in alcoholic oblivion but I think we had a good time!

Hi Will

Nice to hear I didn't imagine it, Yeah I do remember the Yetties but not what they did, I think they had very long hair before it was common. my best memories are of Gerry Lockran, sadly died in 1987, Royd Rivers, Mick & Mack, Johnny Wilson, Ron Geesin, and a host of others. I'm sure some of my best memmories would be the ones I can't remember. I was a bit young back then and kinda taken under wings and invited to lots of parties, it was a great time, like having an enormous family but without the hangups. I have a Gerry Lockran LP but can't play vinyl any more. One of my most vivid memories is of a young woman playing and singing Scarborough Fair at the Nags Head, Clapham Common, 1964ish, there must have been about a dozen of us there, she was introduced as Peggy and was fantastic. You may be able to guess her second name which didn't come to light until sometime later. It was Peggy Seeger. What price now?

Sorry to be pedantic, but The Marquis of Clanricarde was not in Clanricarde Gardens. There was no pub in Clanricarde Gardens - I know, I lived there in the basement of No.10 for 3 years from 1967 to '70. The M of C was (and still is) in Southwick Street, Paddington. There was a Marquis of Granby just over Bayswater Road, in the road that connects to Kensington Church Street.

Hey - that brings back some memories! I booked them to play at "Clanfolk", the BBC Folk Club which, in those days, was held at the Marquis of Clanricarde in Clanricarde Gardens in Bayswater. From what I can recall, they were great fun - and were indeed called the Jugular Vein. Talking in that vein, do you remember the Yetties from that period?

Hi all

My first post!!!

There was a trio of folkies doing the South London club scene back in the sixties "when I was doing a bit of plonking myself" They ere the Jugular Vein, vain or vane. they comprised Fred (Kettle) Evans, Dave Evans and I can't remember the Jug player's name. Fred played a kettle with a trumpet mouth piece up the spout, they were a good fun turn and I was sure they made an album, but then I thought I did as well! The JV played regularly at the Nags Head, Wandsworth Rd, run by Big Sue. Other venues The Nags Head, Clapham Common, Old Town, The Half Moon, Putney, etc

Has anyone else any memmories, knowledge? I'd be pleased to hear.

All the best

Oldguit
