Subject: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: r.padgett Date: 24 Sep 08 - 10:31 AM The Yorkshire Garland continues its interest in songs collected in Yorkshire and it seems Tommy Daniel published a Yorkshire Broadsheet with some of his collected songs if anyone has such a Broadsheet can you let me know Does anyone sing: The Iron Man ~ this is a song sung by Tommy Daniel about Miners, probably of Irish origin? Also Fair Rosedale ~ A Graham Miles song about Iron Mining? Does Martyn Wyndham - Read sing this? or Richard Grainger? I am in contact with Mick Haywood who has already contributed to the YG collection, also Tony Morris Many thanks Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: nutty Date: 25 Sep 08 - 03:59 AM I used to sing Fair Rosedale as I'm sure Robin Dale did as well. As far as I know it has never been recorded. Other of Graeme's songs pertaining to Yorkshire are ..... The last of the Cleveland miners The Old Town Ring of Iron I'll probably think of more also how about Slaggy Island (Vin Garbutt) and the lovely song about Staithes (i'll probably remember the title later) Remember everything south of the Tees used to be the North Riding of Yorkshire |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: nutty Date: 25 Sep 08 - 04:17 AM There's also 'Caedmon' and 'Boulby Mine' by Bob Skingle (Teesside Fettlers) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: r.padgett Date: 25 Sep 08 - 11:52 AM No not that one! verse 1 If you could see me collier lad, come marching down the street, Dressed up in all 'is uniform, so dainty and so neat, 'Is teeth shine like the ivory, 'Is eyes are black as sloes, You can easily tell a collier lad, wherever he goes 3rd verse There's two of them from Skipton, and two from Drayton town, And two of them from Batley, a place of high renown Six nicer young fellows you never could behold They could turn the blackest diamonds into silver or bright gold any good? Ray |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: nutty Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:52 PM It's not the version I sing .... It's closer to the song I've heard sung by Barrie and Ingrid Temple - the Yorkshire verse might just have been put in. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: Steve Gardham Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:57 PM Hi Hazel, Yes it's a fairly widespread song but this version is so Yorkshirecentric that we'd like to include it. It has a long pedigree starting out life as a sailor song then as a (sea-going) collier, and then naturally adapted to colliers of the landbased sort. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: The Doctor Date: 28 Sep 08 - 07:42 AM Fair Rosedale is in Songscapes, The last of the Cleveland Miners and Ring of Iron both in Forgotten Songs Remembered. As far as I know none of these songs has been recorded, certainly not on any of the CDs I have. Roy Palmer's book Poverty Knock has a section on pit life, with 13 songs, including The Pony Driver, collected from a Castleford miner, but not the version of Collier Lad that you're looking for. I'll check through the rest of my collection at some point and see what else is there. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: r.padgett Date: 28 Sep 08 - 02:41 PM Many thanks to all! Yorkshire songs is the thrust so McColl and Welsh and for that matter North East songs are Geographically outside of our area! I have Fair Rosedale by Graham Miles in front of me ~ lyrics and music, anyone singing this? The Pony Driver equates to I am a Driver [my pony rubs] and I have Mick Haywood and Bill Price singing this Steve [Gardham] has obtained this as sung by Bill Hill and collected by A.E.Green who was researching out of Leeds University in the 60s Any contributions gratefully accepted! Ray |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: Steve Gardham Date: 29 Sep 08 - 03:58 PM Hi Nutty, The difficult problem I can foresee with the contemporary songs is we need to have non-commercial ownership of a particular recording of a song including the full agreement of writer, performer and recordist. If you can help in getting these permissions for us from any of the above-mentioned writers/artistes this would be very helpful. This is particularly important now we have the offer of The Website Archive Group taking on the website for all evers. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tom Daniel (Batley) and Mining songs From: GUEST,Dave Hatton Date: 16 Jun 21 - 04:23 AM I know it's many years on, but I have a recording of Jacqui Macdonald signing the Yorkshire version of The Miner Lad on the final Spinners concert on Radio 2, from over 30 years ago. It's a beautiful rendition. |
