Some of my folk friends tell me I'm not really a "folkie" because I play/sing Blues, Jazz standards, 50's/60's, Country, Contemporary Folk etc - and I was told "You don't like traditional folk anyway do you?"

My answer to that question was "I like tradtional folk music if it's done well, don't like it if it isn't..."

Dick Miles appeared at the wonderful (trad-based) Bay Folk Club (at the Dolphin) in Whitby last Friday (19th Sep) and his performance fitted nicely into my definition of traditional folk done well. Alternating between guitar and concertina accompaniment, Dick did 3 sets as part of the famous 3-part/two half folk evenings that is the standard Bay Folk Club format able to accommodate both local and visiting floor singers.

His special talent is his concertina playing, but his vocal style and gentle introductions/interesting anecdotes, together with beautifully balanced set-list provided us with a very relaxed atmosphere and entertaining evening.

My special talent is definitely not writing reviews, but I can recognise live folk music that is presented with ingredients of both quality and entertainment.

Dick Miles - catch up with him if you can; you won't be dissappointed.

I thought 'the wonderful (trad-based) Bay Folk Club (at the Dolphin) was in Robin Hoods Bay - NOT Whitby!
(But Dick is good)

mind you I was lucky to get to the gig at all.
The standard of driving on English roads,must be at an all time low.
if our driver Steve Dawes had not been so alert,and jammed on his brakes instantly,we would have all been killed,by a maniac driver.some idiot overtaking[coming towards us] in a totally unsuitable place
dangerous driving was an understatement
one reason I try to travel by train.
Robin Hoods Bay,of course is not accessible by train.

Sorry about the "senior moment" - it was of course Robin Hood's Bay, and not the Dolphin in Whitby (which is now, by the way, a venue for folk music during the Whitby folk week). I agree the view on driving standards on our roads - time to ban those infantile idiots on the "Dave" channel I think.

There was another concertina player and singer who gave us a fine rendition of the Rawtenstall annualfair,
the standard of singers was good.local singers of high calibre like John Wilson,SteveDawes and HelenPitt,a lass who sang a fine rendition of Whitby Whaler,plus Ken and Marion Hall.,plus lowden himself.
excellent hand pumped beer,and an excellent club/pub.

I assume this was on the Moors road to Whitby. Unfortunately, that kind of idiocy is all too common on that particular road. The notices say fewer accidents recently. How, I don't know.

BTW, Dick did an excellent night the previous night at the Wellington at Wolviston. I not only thoroughly enjoyed the evening, but also the CD I bought.

I am doing two workshops, at the ryedale folk weekend, 2 00pm sat 28 may duration 55 minutes, and 100 pm sunday 29 may 100 pm, duration 55 minutes, thanks. One will probably be on song accompaniment.

... but is still way above the danger level every time one ventures on to the road in Italy. I'm saying that with some feeling as I return once again to that country next week.

A few years ago after a long and particularly hair-raising drive in Italy, I was trying to relax and sat down to watch the news on the (abysmal) Italian television. A recent announcement had just been made that roughly a half of all deaths from road accidents in the EU were in Italy. This appalling fact was denounced by the then-pope. The reaction by all the talking head pundits on the programme was 'Why is the pope interfering in secular matters? This is nothing to do with him; he should stick to religion.'

The Fastnet Maritime and Folk Festival had a very successful fundraising quiz, the winners were" Cycle paths".
A big thankyou to all 5 teams and to quizmasters Siobhan and James, and to Peter and Joan O Leary of Levis Corner Bar, for hosting and donating prizes and raffle prizes, a total of 170 euros was raised towards festival costs.
