I was once in punk bands named: "The Goodrich Blimps" and "2.5 Children". There was a band from Boulder (I think) Colorado once called "The Dancing A$$holes" ("Making rock & roll dangerous again...")

Not a band name as such, but once was involved with a club that went by the name of PUNCA (Peurile Uncouth Neurotic Childish Art ) reputedly a quote from an Arts Teacher to Peotry/Folk Music et al. Great name for a Band tho?

Always wanted to call or band "The Elastic Band" be cause we're stretched to provide a full line up at most gigs.

Other alternates include "DIS" which can be expanded to DISBAND Should DISBAND

Yes Sandra, I guess I'm used to them now and forget how unusual I thought the name was when I first met them.

The first year I saw them was at Snalbans, and while talking to John Grenenger, he told me he had booked them for the festival on the strength of their name.

I still love 'em. Lovely bunch of guys, too.

JennyO - you forgot our friends The Wheeze & Suck Band. They are the only group who can drown out the coffee machine at Jenny's club - some of them are Morris men & they are sight for sore eyes (& great musos too).

When Charlie Noble & Landlady's Daughter were visiting several years ago, LD said that Rhonda looked like she had gone to an audition for a string quartet.

back in the sixties I played in a little band called "Great Greasy Boils under the Armpits." It must have neen bad as I was the lead singer. Our little village band here is called "the mad woman in the bungalow" which could be something to do with our concertina player!!!!

Our gospel singalong band is called the Good News-Goodtime Band. When we introduce ourselves we always point out that people will have a higher-quality musical experience if they sing-- loud enough to drown us out. Maybe I should change it to "For God's Sake Sing Along"!

I run a folk club and a guy just sent me an email asking if his group can perform there. They call themselves "Hanging Swamp Swing", apparently named after a botanical feature where they live.

At Easter at the National Folk Festival, there was a group called "Asparagus and the Despotic Lychee". They were a pair of feisty young girls who were rather clever and funny, actually. The audience liked them.

I won't vouch for "great," but--
I once was at a contra dance where a pickup band was playing.
They were asked what their name was; they took a look at the wall behind them, and replied, "No Smoking!"

When I was a new player, I was thrown into a contra dance band with two other newbies, and we called ourselves "Tossed Greens."

The most recent version of our contra dance band is "Contrariwise." (a`la 'Tweedle Dee' and 'Tweedle Dum')

Acoustic duo I'm in first considered The Curmudgeons as a name. I liked that. We wound up with Home Brew which people seem to like but IMO is a bland sort of name..sounds like it was selected using focus groups and marketing strategies.

Some day I'd like to be in a rock band called Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand.

They did consider using their maiden names.. Gelazenas and McKeever but thought that no-one could spell it.

Their friends Brass Tacks were following them at a gig .They introduced them as Brassed Off and Tackless.

Actually my idea was "Altered Priorities Ahead". What a great concept! Glenn is starting a new band and has been looking for a name. Some good ones came up. Someone suggested "Chaos Theory" which I think is great, but this one is even better. I can't wait to get home and make the suggestion. He like he name to be created by someone in the band, not from the outside, but hopefully he'll like this one.

I was in a couple of bands over the last few years where we'd make up a new name on the spot. Thus the "Unshaven" was born, as was "Buam Varscht", which I particularly liked, as it's literal translation is "tree sausage" aka bananas in Low German (Mennonite speak; a rural Manitoba thing). The keyboard player had another band with one of my all time favorite names: "The Manatees" or "Sea Cows".

Today it happened again. I was listening to the news on the BBC (we actually get that here in Wyoming) and they were reading a story about the fiasco at Stonehenge, in which a group of druids had obtained permission for a celebration there in observance of the summer solstice. However, a bunch of rowdies took over, stormed the police line (the police were simply there to protect the druids, of course) and began dancing on top of the stones. So of course the coppers had to bust 'em all and send 'em packing.

The news reader intoned so seriously, "Scores of disappointed druids left the area..." I would LOVE to sing with a band named the Disappointed Druids.

my brother had a band called Magic Apple which i always really liked the name of and it had a very cool logo of a green apple with a witches hat on.

i always thought 'The Free Radicals' would be a good name. its a bit of a chemistry pun im afraid but thats what several months of A level chemistry revision does to you i suppose. ah well, only a week to go.

Hey -- I'd heard of the 4-Skins, too. I once sang in the Gonzo All-Star Garage Orchestra. When we did gigs, it was changed to the Pecos Mountain Boys, which I found a little insulting because I'm a girl -- an older girl. I also joined a band once called Sunburst and they made me & Co. So we were Sunburst & Company.

I used to be half of an Old Timey duo who only performed in The Grand Ole Opry, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. We were very sincere, so we called ourselves The Credible String Band.
A semi-pickup acapella women's group I met recently are called Damsel Jam.
A Glasgow band is called Steep The Feet - which may be too deep Scots urban vernacular to work for some of our viewers.
As a member of Baheid McBear I once shared the stage with another group called Frank and the Shit Hot Three. They were not.

The two bands I'm in now are "Under the Water Lilies"(My festival group) and "The Rogane Brothers" (my working band). Some of my favorite names include: Conga Panic, Everyone But Ray, Kennedy Motorcade,(tasteless but interesting)...Old School Carpool, and last but not least... I like a term I invented which is similar to MAWG (middle aged white guys). Instead of Yuppies (young upwardly-mobile urban persons), it's Muppies (middle-aged upwardly etc). Has connotations of the Muppets - something cute which you don't have to take too seriously.

I mentioned in another thread that an Australian band which plays at the folk festivals, but probably uses a lot of C&W songs is called Sensitive New Age Cowpersons.

Den - where were you? I played in a band called 'Free Beer'! (based in Exeter, UK). Only had to put up a poster saying 'Free Beer tonight!!!'
My favourite name was a women's theatre group called 'Cunning Stunts'...
Also in Devon - Eddy Stone & the Lighthouses, Spinach for Norman (there's a long & tedious story attached to that one), Malone's Rangers
But, isn't it strange - when you have a new band, the naming is the most difficult thing...I was in a band which we called 'Mr Smith's' for six months - due to lack of imagination & anonymity (& because we played 'The Piper Through the Meadow Strayed', the theme tune for a Uk TV program called Mr Smith's Vegetable Garden!) - interestingly most enquirers for bookings imagined they'd heard of us - a cosy name.

Once, there was a band from Ontario called "The Truth Hurts." But in Quebec, la belle province, their name was simply pronounced "Da Tru Turds." Cheers, Jory Nash

John Specker & I were "Country Mucus" ca1970 in Philly and the "The Athole Cummers" [ actual border tune title !!] in Newcastle ca1972

Eliott Ribner & I were "Cruel & Unusual" ca1973 [ your guess which/which ] RiGGY ps was there ever REALLY a "Kit & Kaboodle" ?

The first band I was in was called "HollyHock Rainbucket and the Picket Fence Skin Divers". I have always wanted to advertise a band name on one of those white sign wagon we see infront of saloons in New York State. I'd call the band "$2.98 Shrimp Buffet". I would also like to have a Glitter Country Band called "Alice Chalmers"

I have friend whose band is called "Color Blind James and The Rock and Roll Experience".

A few years back there was a rock band in these parts called Screaming Broddoli, and they were good. I once played with a group calling themselves Russ and the Three Susans, because that's who we were And didn't they have a moment at the old Fox Hollow festival where they got all of the performers on stage and did something they all knew (Circle Be Ungroken, usually) and they called themselves the Wretched Mess String Band. I perform with two speech/language pathologists, and when I was working with blind adults I suggested we call ourselves the Eye Ear, Nose and Throat band. Somehow I was never taken seriously. Then there was the punk band at the open mike session who called themselves Death Cow Being from Vermont where the cow has become somewhat a symbol of our rural wholesomeness and cuteness (YUCK!) I rather liked this name myself, but the band sounded like a cow in the thros of. . . well, a fate worse than death.

I've seen"Norfolk 'n'Good" on the same bill as "Suffolk'n'Watt". (WelL possibly)

My band is "Unsafe At Any Speed." We say "That's our name -- not just an observation." We claim never to have played any song the same way twice.

Friends of ours are in a male duet called "Bent Harpoon". They're completely nuts, but they're very good. One of them also performs solo as "Dr. WhizzBang".

We also know a group of four women called "No Windows". They don't do windows and they don't do floors, but they do sing extremely well.

Another friend who is a PBS listener says his dream band name would be "All Strings Considered", but he made me promise never to use it. I may be violating his trust by mentioning it, so please don't take it.

There is a band here named The Elderly Brothers.

Some of the names that so called 'tribute' bands have are pretty inventive, even though that is about the only thing about them that is.

Trouble is I can't think of the best ones at the moment.

Fleetwood Back is one and there is an ABBA one called Bjorn Again (They haved offered to play especially for Rick, I hear).

Some guy at an Edinburgh venue (Big Jim Knight at Dreethy Neebours, I think) called a friend of mine to find a name for his band to put on the poster. And John, slightly irritable, answered "you can call us flamin' anything" - and so he did.

One of our (great) local bands are called 'Carport Extension'. And the Teletubbies' Nursery Rhymes video has a bunch of guys called 'King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys' (anybody who went to Public School in the UK will appreciate that one...)

There's a punk group in Toronto calls itself "Armed and Hammered". And Gwen Swick ("Tamarack" & "Quartette") back in her Queen Street days, called one of her groups "Hamburger Patty & thr Helpers".

I've mentioned this on a previous thread, I've always wanted to call my (non-existent) band Mal Canto and the Malcontents (for reasons anyone who's heard me sing willunderstand). An occasional band in Essex (reforminmg about once a year to do one last gig) which plays 50s Rock & Roll call themselves the Beverley Brothers!

I have played in pickup groupings where the rule was "Whoever gets the gig names the band" - in order to avoid tax problems. Hence I have played in Glasgow with Audio Murphy, Sourrocks, Houghmagundy, Ba'heid MacBear, Eat The Breid, The Blue Sky Boys, and my favourite - Robbery With Violins.
In Cambridge, Mass, in the 1960s I performed with a group whose name transmuted over time: The Bow Street Irregulars became Happy Jack's Thrift Club became Happy Jack and the Orcs became The Shirefolk.

"Kill the Bouzouki " is one of my favorites (as well as a good suggestion, it occasionally seems). One of the more daft is Scotland's "Deaf Shepherd" (which incidentally is a very good band)

I'm sorry KC, but both of those have been used, in a way, before. Zippy and the Pinheads was the original name of the Rolling Stones and the Spice Girls were going to be the Bodhran Bopping Babes except none had enough talent to play a bodhran.
