Subject: Handcarved Guitar strap by Billo Sables.
From: Big Mick
Date: 10 Jun 99 - 11:37 AM

I just received in the mail a hand carved strap that I had Bill Sables do for me. He donates 25% to the Mudcat when he sells one to a 'Catter. I must tell you it is absolutely georgous. He does marvellous work and I recommend him to you. Mine has the logo from my band, a Celtic Cross, zoomorphic drawings, the Mudcat logo, and my name on it. It is a true work of art and a keepsake. I am sure it will be in the family for years.

How about other Mudcatters who have wares to sell and would put a cut in for the 'Cat?

Mick

There great straps, worth your money. Not only do thay last you ages but they can be personalised.

My advice is BUY ONE

Seeing the straps makes me wish I could play guitar, so I could use one.

Bye, Sam

Sam, Do what I'm doing. Learn to play. It's really great. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes painful, (I wonder if they make bandaids to go over the tips of your fingers), always rewarding. If this is not an option, you can always buy a guitar and stand it in the corner.

I would like to order one, and I probably will, but my new guitar is not exactly a Martin, it's only a Seagul. The quandry is, should I put a beautiful work of art in a K-Mart frame? But then again, it is 25% toward supporting Mudcat.

I am certainly sitting on the horns of a delema..

(I love that expression ;-)

See you soon, Bill.

Annap,

Your analogy is in error. The Seagull is a wonderful guitar, a great guitar for the money. Mine is constructed very well, out of great quality woods, has a very good action and, most importantly has a wonderful voice. Martins, depending on when they were built certainly are wonderful guitars, but the Seagull is a true value for the dollar spent. I guess I am pointing this out, because I don't want you to fall into the trap of thinking you have something that must be replaced. There is absolutely no reason for a beginner to pay the money for a Martin. And your Seagull will stand toe to toe with it in terms of playability and quality of sound. Make sure it is set up correctly and enjoy playing a very good guitar.

And by the way, if you do a forum search, and under "Subject" type Seagull, you will find a whole thread on these marvellous guitars.

Wish I could be with you folks at your gathering.

All the best,

Mick

Thanks Mick for referencing one of the guitar threads which, after re-reading them, I'm very happy with as they are pretty informative.

There's probably an obvious answer to this one, but how do we find B. Sables and see his work ? Thanks, Dave.

I love my guitar. I'm having wonderful fun with it. I think it sounds beautiful, and it's easy to play (action).

It was COMPARATIVELY inexpensive. I just felt funny putting something as precious as Bills handiwork on something inexpensive, that's all. I was being light about it. Sorry.

I'm also glad to hear that my guitar is well thought of. Thank you. It's made in Canada you know.

There is a funny story concerning my purchase. Want to hear it? Good.

I walked into the music store with my heart set on a Yamaha because my ex had one and it always sounded good to me. When I requested the Yamaha, the store clerk informed me that they had no Yamahas. I started looking around and strumming some guitars. All of a sudden the clerk tells me that I should try the Seagull. He says it's made on the N. American Continent, Canada. Not in some Asian country, by children, in some sweat factory!!! How could I say no?

People are so funny sometimes. Well, I liked it and had heard the name Seagull before, and it was the right price, so, I bought it.

Mick, I wish you could be here too. annap

YES! I second the endorsement- I have a Bill Sables guitar strap too AND it's on a Seagull so there! The strap is the loveliest thing I have ever owned- a Kells design with yes, the Mudcat logo as well. Bill's trademark ladybird design was fun for my students to look for. It's a work of art.
What's more, Bill will be coming to the states this very week for the summer and many of us are looking forward to spending some time with him. We'll be at Old Songs at the end of this month in Altamont NY. My strap will be there, too!

Allison: Remind me to be sure to see your strap. Did your message mean that Bill S. will be at Old Songs, hisownself? We'd love to meet him. I won't be wearing a Mudcat T-shirt, but I'll be sure to wear my "Folk Fogey" baseball cap, which ought to make me identifiable. We'll be open for visits at the Folk-Legacy booth at all hours. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sandy

I was at first reluctant to bring this up, because it seemed too mercenary for the beloved Mudcat, but I have conquered my reticence. I admit that I am a glass and metal worker -- I make marbles and glass beads, and also work with fired glass enamels on copper and silver. I use silversmithing techniques to shape the metals, and acid-etch parts of the metals and fill them in with fired glass enamels. I'd be glad to contribute to the Mudcat 25% of sales to Mudcatters. You can send me a private Mudcat email if you want to explore this further.

Is not Bill going to attend your gathering? This might be a good incentive for folks to come see his handiwork. It is spectacular.

Mark, relax. I personally, having lost my marbles years ago, might be a future client. Besides, Catspaw's been selling his bad jokes for quite a while now.

Yes, Sandy and all, I believe Bill is planning to come to Old Songs. And be careful what you offer- I have a feeling the Folk Legacy booth will be Mudcat Central the last weekend in June! See you then! Allison

Just to endorse what has been siad about bills straps . I got him to carve me one, and once I saw it I asked him not to put any colour on it, with the exeption of his trade mark (a small ladybird)six years later I still have only the one strap, Its worn in, and has a outstanding worn leather colour, It's soft and light and you don't know that you have it on.Bill also carves belts and bags if ever you are looking for an one off present   Merry Christmas to all.Oombanjo

A true craftsman.
