Lucy Ward is a wonderful young singer/songwriter from Derby who has got through to the semi-finals of the Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards. I've now seen her perform on several occasions and over this weekend, at Roots North, she did three superb sets.

She really has a most amazing talent, with a voice that brings you out in goose-bumps, the ability to put her own slant on every song she sings and an affinity with the audience that is totally natural and uncontrived. She also write some really penetrating and thoughtful songs.

The most incredible thing about her is her maturity - considering she's only 18.

She would certainly be a worthy winner of the Awards. If you haven't come across her yet, you certainly will in the future.

I can confirm 2 things:

1/ The Leveller is definitely not her manager (in fact that is a scary thought!)

2/ Lucy is a fine singer and performer.

She certainly is a fine singer and performer we played with her last year at The Festival On The Moor and she was only 17 then. Well worth a listen if you get the chance.

I have to agree with Leveller. Not only is she an excellent singer with an amazing voice but she is such a lovely person too.

I predict that she will go far. Well done Richard Grainger for having her on at Roots North and Osmotherley Gathering.

Let's hope that she gets through to the final.

Yes, that's brilliant news. I listened to the finalists on Mike Harding's show last night. They are all really good, but I think Lucy definitely has the edge - what a fantastic voice!

I'd love to go down to London to the final in December to support Luce - MH is announcing how to get free tickets next week.

Lucy has dropped by at The Vernon a couple of odd times. She is an impressively talented and confident young lady.

It is hard to kick free of the Rusby-isms just as it was difficult for our generation not to copy Dylan, Bert Jansch, and MacColl- and virtually impossible for the ladies to ignore Baez and Joni Mitchell.

The late Tony Capstick once told me that all his heroes when he started were Irish singers like the guys in the Dubliners. I don't think borrowing the odd inflection really stops anyone finding their own style.

Lucy is well on her way to finding her own approach to folksinging.

At the risk of a little thread drift (and a Maz O'Connor Fan too) first of all let me congratulate the finalists, it looks like being a close run thing again this year.

To comment on WLD here I think that's right - Jon Boden has an article in the last issue of our local folk magazine, Stirrings saying much the same thing. Jon's argument is that the "natural way into singing is through imitation".

Takes a while for many to find there own way.

And not just Tom Jones. Two years ago father and son entered the double jig contest at Sidmouth.

Unbeknown to them - New Esperance (for it was they) had a pile of thongs to chuck at the young son.

And a huge pair of baggy bloomers for the father.

We were delighted at the Carrington Triangle Folk Club in Nottingham, UK, to have this refreshingly delightful young singer as our guest last night. She is gutsy, has a very easy and outgoing personality and excellent stage presence. She gave a good performance which was well received by a capacity audience. Whilst our usual audience normally consists of a bunch of septagenarians, the youthful Lucy did bring down the average audience age thus providing a glimmer of hope for the future of our culture. Yes we took to folk music in the sixties and have been loyal for five decades and it shows in age profile of folk clubbers. I wish every success to Lucy Ward and hope that if any folk club organisers read this post, you might consider giving Lucy a spot at your club. You can put me down as an advocate, she's kuel!

Well Fairy Boy produced lovely tingles. Something unusual about her voice in that song that lends very well to haunting.

She did justice to Waltzing Matilda too. I like very much. Thank you for sharing.

Actually, I think she's now 19, but I agree with all the plaudits - she taught the 'rock' musicians at this year's Leicester Big Session a few things about relating to an audience.

Tom Jones, Villan? Do you regularly get knickers thrown on stage when you sing?

I caught most of her interview on BBC Radio Nottingham last night and I thought that she talked a lot of sense, especially the bit about feeling nervous before singing (as anyone who cares about their music should).
It was also nice to hear her rendition of "The Fairy Boy" a song I haven't heard since the middle sixties from either The Grehan Sisters or Paddy Tunney I can't remember which although an earlier Mudcat thread mentions Joe Heaney singing it (so she's obviously listening to the right people!)
Lucy sang from the floor at our club about a year ago when we had Frankie Armstrong as guest and she had attended Frankie's song workshop at Soar Bridge that afternoon. Clearly here is a girl who is still prepared to learn from the masters and who does not profess to know it all.

Seen Lucy several times now and every time came away smiling. She has that effect on the audience, she just relates so well and so obviously enjoys what she is doing. And she can do sad as well as happy. Not just a great singer, but a really good performer, and that is rarer.

Stunning voice, great stage presence, genuine bubbly personality. Obviously loves what she does and wants to convey that. Can make you laugh and cry in the same set. Beginning to write some decent songs. Not bad for a young 'un!

Saw Lucy at the Carrington this week for the first time. She was excellent. She's got a great voice and a lovely sense of fun. She really got the room going. I've checked out her website and found that she's got a really big week coming up. So I thought I'd give her some support.
