Subject: Used Audiocassette Giveaway Starting
From: wysiwyg

I hope this will become a permathread so I can edit and knock out expired information.

I'm embarking on a decluttering project. Hardi and I have a large boxful of audiotapes to convert to MP3 for our own use. The tapes are a variety of genres (no rap or hip hop), and they are in a variety of conditions. Most no longer have their boxes, but the tapes themselves mostly are printed with enough info to Google up the tracklist.

It would be easiest just to throw them out as I convert them, if I didn't mind the landfill space. The sound quality is NOT such that a hi-fi-cionado would love to have them in their ears too long. BUT they are a good source of songs-to-learn, or inexpensive road music for those whose cars still have tape players. So, before I Freecycle them locally, I'd rather offer them first to Catters. But I need to keep it very, very simple. The conversion process will occur in the workout room, as our dogs run a treadmill, and I'm not looking to add too many more tasks! (Yes I plan to join them.)

Here's the terms: if I have a mailing envelope to re-use and if I have the change for postage, there's no charge to Catters. (If you want to send Max a donation, please do.) On the other hand, if there is an item anyone wants "express," I'll be happy to accept your payment for the cost of mailing if you send it to me, as US cash, in a mailing envelope I can use to send it back to you.

I'll post the cassette titles here. If it's what you want, post here to tell me. When I'm ready to send it to you I'll PM you for your mailing address. Please do NOT, everyone, start PMing me with mailing addresses now-- too much coordination for stroke-brain, OK?

Please understand that I may be aware of some Catters' unique situations, and as a result first-come may not always be first-served. However, people receiving these are welcome to send them on, further, to others who have posted in this thread.

And don't even ask if I can send an MP3 of the tape, instead. That would violate copyright, and these were all bought legally! :~)

~Susan

Today it's Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. It's still running out back, so I do not have the tape here to transcribe the title. Next up is vintage Cindy Mangsen.

Hi Susan,
Yep, I'd be interested in the Bela cassette. I'm a little unclear on how you'd like to work the envelope/postage thing. I'd be happy to donate something-I'm always looking for different music and this seems like a great way to get some.

thanks,
Sue

Is it legal to make a copy of the tape and the give away the tape? How is that different from keeping the tape and giving away the copy?

Sorry to quibble, and I know everyone buys some, copies some.

It's helpful, if folks who read this thread are interested in seeing what may come available later, if readers refresh the thread from time to time.

RE: Copying. The tapes are my personal property. I am free to make a copy for my own use. I am free to give away my personal property.

Re: Bela Fleck-- noted. Check back in a week or so, OK?

Just done, a wonderful cassette I believe is out of print. I'm listening to it now.

Cindy Mangsen, SETTLE DOWN, 1988, Front Hall Music. From before Compass Rose. Before Steve Gillette. I believe it may also be from before her duo and trio CDs with Anne and Priscilla, although she did sing with Anne when they both were poor Chicago folkies working on guitar technique. I did not find a link to a tracklist anywhere, so I'll transcribe (apols typos). Child #s are Cindy's.

Who Woulda Thunk It (Greg Brown)
The Long and Lonely Winter (Dave Goulder)
The Cruel Mother (Child 20)
Across the Blue Mountains (Trad)
Willie-O (Steve Sellors) with harmony vocals
Le Roi a Fait Battre Tabours (Trad)
Megan Murphy (Pete Sutherland)
This Old Mandolin (Mike Smith)
Lisbon (Trad) (tape fuzziest here)
Settle Down (Trad) with harmony vocals-- one sounds like Anne Hills
Fair Annie (Child 62)
October Roses (Linda Allen)

The paper label is funky but the tape is in surprisingly good shape.

Wonderful to know it's safely stowed on my HD now!

~Susan

John Lee Hooker, BOOM BOOM Issued 1992, Virgin Records US. He must have liked THAT! :~)

This is the tape linked above, not the K-Tel "original reissue" by the same title Amazon also shows with a different tracklist. I haven't listened to the MP3 yet, so I can't comment on condition/audio, yet.

Well, the above Hooker tape is a little fuzzy from age, but uniformly so (I did a quick check every 30 seconds), and not too bad for car tunes!

Just done: Jon Gindick: Country & Blues Harmonica For the Musically Hopeless (Can that really be his real name?!?!?) 1984, Klutz USA. It's in pretty good shape. It's a teaching tape. Probably out of print.

I have a second copy (I think) of the Gindick teaching tape above. Dunno if it was a 2-tape set or what.

It would be great if a helpful clone could copy or move the following up into the opening post.

=====

Now that I have got the box opened up, I find that I was smarter than I remembered-- the tapes are all packed into baggies. So they have not gotten near the damp damage I anticipated. The other good news is that there is also a baggie of inserts-- don't know yet how well they will match up with the tapes themselves.

=====

Here's a tease-- there are inserts for:
MJH
Gordon Bok
Steve Goodman
Jim Post
Carla Sciaky
Cindy Mangsen with Steve Gillette
Cindy and Anne Hills' Never Grow Old.....
Dan Keding Stories
Sherlock Holmes radio plays
Jimi Hendrix (really!)

Of course the folkie finds will be converted first, so the tape heads are in the best shape for those clear vocals and guitar licks....

PS I did save a pile of cassette boxes, so they're getting boxed as I convert them. And obviously, if they have inserts, I'm including them.

"RE: Copying. The tapes are my personal property. I am free to make a copy for my own use. I am free to give away my personal property."

Not true.
Mo the caller is right. Under copyright laws in UK and USA, I believe you are not allowed to copy it and give away the original.

Just be aware that advertising it like this could bring unwanted attention!

Thanks, but I'm not worried about it. I have made it clear these are not in such shape that they would be copy-worthy for mass production, and that no one is making a dime off the deal. Also, there is only one mass producer I know, and I completely trust his ethics if he asks for anything (he hasn't), because I know how he has handled reissues in the past.

But just to confirm with potential recipients: these are gifts from my personal property to yours, for your own use only, and before they are mailed you'll acknowlege that you agree to that condition.

This is my fourth reboot to post this and IE isn't a happy camper this AM either, so sorry, no links or tracklist this time.

THE ORIGINAL STEVE GOODMAN, Buddha Records 1989. I believe this was later reissued as a CD.

VINCE GUARALDI TRIO, Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown.

Both of these are in reasonably decent quality for car tunes or learning the songs. No inserts with them.

I'll try to post the Goodman tracklist later.

Guaraldi Tracks: Oh, Good Grief / Pebble Beach / Happiness Is / Schroeder / Charlie Brown Theme / Linus Loves Lucy / Blue Charlie Brown / Baseball Theme / Freda (with naturally curly hair). I believe it's out of print.

Goodman tracks: The Dutchman / Song for David / Chicken Cordon Blues / Somebody Else's Troubles / Six Hours Ahead of the Sun / I Ain't Never Heard You Play No Blues / You Never Even Call Me By My Name / City of New Orleans.
