Our local pub is a very folk friendly pub and supports demelza house charity, as well as letting the gongscourers drink there after practise, they want to have a folk day, its a smallish pub but the welcome is huge, we danced there in the summer and the place was packed, they are offering a barrel of beer from shepard neame, loads a grub usually, they will be shutting the car park for dancers should you be of that way inclined, musicians can play to thier hearts content, be sure of a great welcome, this could be the start of a new folk venue in north kent, they are thinking of end of octoberish but need to know if anyone is interested, can folks post to thread and i will pass on info, then update,

Romany Man, it would be useful to pop a Postcode of the pub on the thread for folks who aren't local. Good luck with this, it's nice to see friendly new venues starting up!

I'm interested - I can get there by public transport. How about the weekend before the Upnor one? Make a firm date and we'll get some of folkmob to come along.

That sounds interesting. The train connections to Sittingbourne are quite good. Depending on when it is and what gigs I've got on, I might well be there.

Hi Romany man
This sounds like fun, Crayford and the surrounding area is where many of my ancestors lived and Lesley and I now live just down the lane from Demelza house and so we always try to support any events aimed at raising money for them ~ I'll watch this thread for a date and hopefully we'll be able to get along there.

A local one in North Kent (Crayford) would be nice, I am sure it would be well attended, if the right day is chosen. It should encourage the London folkies to venture. especially as the old bus pass can get you there free. The FolkMob and Orpington Folk clubs are quite local.
Possibilities of camping may be difficult though, however if it develops there are a few fields not too far away that may be approached.

regards
fisheye

ok now we are cooking, the day will be what we make it, its the first of many that they want to put on, its the most folk friendly pub i have been to ever, and they are so into doing anything for anybody,so i feel that we could really create somthing here as its a blank canvas so to speak,

Sorry forgot to say thanks motley, your the first to say you will come, hopefully the gongscourers and maybe bishops gundulf will be able to make it, i have not got a list of beers yet but when i do i will post it, shep neame seem to be behind the day all the way, the staff are preparing posters, the regulars cant wait, so seems it will be a good day, if we support ourselves and turn up and play dance sing and of course drink.

ok if a side can make it all the better there will not be a programme as such, just a day of merriment and music and of course drink, sides are more than welcome as the pub love it, by the pub i mean the landlady and landlord, staff and the regulars, the gongs use the pub as our drinking hole after practice and it has now become many of our s local, if the side cant make just come and have fun, jam a bit, drink a bit, that goes for all, however the car park will be set aside for dancers.

doubt it very much as you would have to share with their rather large dog, who can be rather anti social. hope you still able to come, its only a few minutes walk from crayford railway station, or by car 5 mins from black prince turn off buses are frequent from dartford bexleyheath and all points n.s.e.w it going to be an open house, no schedules, no timetables, just a good old folk day where musicians dancers singers can all do thier thing as and when, still short on morris dancers,

If there are no line engineering works that weekend, I'll be there!

hi woodsie, i think its on the bexley line, if not get to dartford and you can get a bus straight there, or you can get the train to slade green and get off there and get bus to crayford, failing that get the bus 89 i think from lewisham to bexleyheath change there get bus to crayford, R.M

The 89 Bus stops at Slade Green Station. It also goes to Erith, Bexleyheath and other places. There is a bus- I think it's the 269 which goes from Sidcup- opposite Blockbuster video through Eltham, Bexleyheath. For those of you who know "The Bear and Ragged", it's walking distance from there.

That's Girl Friday... give credit where it is due. Clue is in the name. Girl "Friday" = allusion to Robinson Crusoe's "Man Friday" so regarded as an assistant known for getting the job (any job) done.

Edward.
Thanks for the above advice. What that Landlord needs to learn is that there are other pubs then the British Oak its quite apparent to me that The Oak just turns over like any other pub so whats he on his high horse about ? personally I do not think much of the pub myself or the staff for that matter. I did not fly Blackheath in the end but I did fly The Tudor Barn Home of Folkmob, and will do other venues.

"That's Girl Friday... give credit where it is due. Clue is in the name. Girl "Friday" = allusion to Robinson Crusoe's "Man Friday" so regarded as an assistant known for getting the job (any job) done."

The true story is somewhat different:

Robinson Crusoe was rather partial to coconuts. He enjoyed both the flesh and the milk, and would sometimes use coconut in the curries that he made for gourmet evenings where he and and Man Friday would sit and eat good food and discuss the finer things in life as the sun set over the open sea. Man Friday therefore spent a not inconsiderable amount of time up in the coconut trees, where he would cut the coconuts from the trees and let them fall to the ground. After a while Man Friday came to love the random beats that the coconuts made when they hit the ground, and he had an idea! He thought that if he made a wooden frame from the plentiful supply of wood on the island and then killed one of the island goats and took its skin, he could pull the skin over the frame and when he hit it it would make a percussive sound just like that of the coconuts hitting the ground randomly. He would be able to reproduce the sound he loved without having to bust a gut shinning up a coconut tree!

And so it was that Man Friday became what we now refer to as a drummer, although he was destined to produce only beats of a completely random nature. This did not greatly please Robinson Crusoe as it distracted him from his melodic lap steel playing, and he would often huff and puff and take his instrument to the other side of the island.

Man Friday's drumming style did, however, have its disciples, and even today, in deepest Kent (especially in the Orpington area), it is still possible to hear exponents of the Man Friday drumming style.

Magical as this story is. Melodeon Boy obviously has nothing better to do with himself. Man Friday's drumming is a defence mechanism against melodeon players with loud shirts which can, as you know, deafen and blind people in one foul swoop from 500 yards.
This is the real explanation of why I'm GF. I have run Orpington FRIDAY Folk since 1987. However, Tam's has a ring of truth, in that I do try to help you all, and for some reason people think that I am the person to ask about anything and everything folk in Kent.

A mandolin has 8 strings. They comprise of 4 identical pairs G D A E is usually the standard tuning, same as a violin. 4 and 5 strings is probably a banjo!

Its the people that populate these threads. They either into weaponry or double entendre or both. I have two knives (1 small and 1 large) with leather sheathes from my Mediaval SCA days. I would put them on ebay but I fear some yoof getting one and then doing poor Mr. Bridge in. How could I live with myself?

Other news more related to the purpose of this thread. We probably won't make it. Breaks my heart, but it is the weekend just following Upnor and we have to make some time in November to visit the inlaws up in Stratford U Avon.

Sorry Romany Man and others.

There used to be a shop that sold vintage clothing on the High Street in Canterbury. I hain't been to Canterbury in over 3 years so don't know if it is still there.

Sometimes theatre groups will have a clearout of costumes (typically authentic fabrics and styling etc). But I don't know where they donate or sell the stuff. You might start a BS thread on Mudcat. You never know. Someone may have just what you are looking all lonely and forgotten packed in a box in the loft.

I posted them before 12 On Monday and they had not got there by Tuesday night. And it cost me over a quid fpr the delay. The chap behind the counter assured me they would arrive in good time in fact they would go to the Greenwich that afternoon and be posted next Morn. Load of cobblers
Bloody Rigmorole.

Any way the Address I sent them to was

The Lord Hood public House
Greenwich London
S.E .10.

I said to the chap I do not recall the name of the road whwre the pub is but he said its a pub there will be np problem
Huh
I imagine they will be there by next Tuesday.??????????????????????????????

Pete

Without the correct street name, number or postcode it is highly unlikely that your item would get there in under 24 hours. The bloke in the post office (not a RM employee) should have known better than to tell you otherwise. Mail from that location is collected and sent to nine elms sorting office in SW8! Then it is sorted by machines! By the way the address should read:

300 Creek Rd
London, SE10 9SW

It could also be that as the item was not addressed to any persom at the pub - so it may have been opened by anybody who may have thought it was "junk" mail, after all they were flyers advertising an event at another pub, miles away!

I agree that the postal service is not what it used to be - this is not the fault of the employees - the blame lies with The Government who are deliberately running it into the ground with the hope of building up public dissatisfaction so that they can then sell it off to their cronies for asset stripping. My own office has been targeted with a further 20% reduction in staff - we are currently running a central London operation with 200 people - the same operation was run with 520 people 14 years ago!!! Businesses in the area now get their mail at 1pm instead of 7am - 9sm sd they used to, ask essex girl!!!! Because of poor wages and unreasonable workloads they now fail to attract quality staff, there are no longer any entrance criteria for workers. no exams to sit and no training of any value. This is all to cut costs, increase short term profits and pay huge bonuses to people who won't be there in a year or two!!!

Write to your MP and tell them that this is not acceptable.

re Post Office... so different in US. Where one does sit exam and still very difficult to be hired. Fairly well paid (used to be more than twice minimum wage with great benefits, even in sorting offices) but evidently very stressful as the term "going postal" explains.

I think what really steams me is the closure of small POs across this country. Killing small communities and making life even more difficult for the most vulnerable. Why doesn't the government get a clue? At least here in Essex, Lord "Reservoir" has promised to subsidise some threatened rural POs with Council tax money. Not too bad --- for a tory.

Back to the original purpose of the thread... I will be there with you in spirit next week, wishing you all great fun and success to romany man's efforts.

whats the post or lack of it got to do with sorting out a folk day, oh well upnor has been and gone, now lets turn towards crayford, the whole pub is at our disposal, one big room upstairs with its own bar, not sure if they will be using it though , two bars downstairs, the car park will be shut to cars, and available to dancers, you might find seamus in there for a bit, but he will be there for photos and maybe a few rides, if you want to put some cash in the box for demelza house im sure he will take a few turns round the blck, no promises, depends on weather, if its wet he stays at home, obvious and treacle of course will be making thier usual apperances, with out the bar staff moaning unlike at upnor, although the landlady had no probs, the sullen bar staff were not happy about them being there though. well folks gotta get this day sorted, without you its nothing so lets take it and make it.

I hope that means you're going to sing something cheerful, and not that you're not going to turn up. Ben is so looking forward to playing your Hag Richard. BTW he played a floor spot at Dartford tonight, was asked to do a third song.

To momentarily return to the Post Office, my dad, uncle, and granddad, and my mum were all in the Post Office, also my ex, and, Tam, it used to be like that in the old days. I don't know if you had to pass a test in my parent's time, b;ut there was certainly an aptitude test in later years. It strikes me that you had to already have a relative working there. It was more like the civial service in those days than the business it is now. See you on Sunday !

come now folks, as sharon the landlady says, its your day, its down to you wether it happens again, its not down to individuals looking for praise or people trying to out do each other, ifn ya wanna do that fine your choice, some of us have had to work hard to get this day under way, it will be nothing without all of you, so make it a day of folk, a day of fun, not a day of snipeing, or whingeing, come or dont, enjoy or dont, sing or dont play or dont dance or dont, see easy aint it, why argue about whats right or wrong, will it make a difference or will it alienate and push people away, the choice is down to you as individuals,
simple case in point, i know i go on about it but its my view, those of you who listen to the news etc good or bad, will be aware that the local councils are having to provide stopping places for travellers, and romanies, but the numbers of places are tiny in comparison with the folk that have been forced into settled way of life. hating living in houses and flats, as i am, but for those that want to thats fine but many of us dont! ifn i was not of my race , i would have a choice in where i live as most of you do, now i ask you to be honest, how many people know the difference between a romany and a tinker, a traveller, how many of you have bothered to find out, or moan about the plight of the gypsy folk.

WHO WANTS ONE LIVIN CLOSE TO THEM, remember we steal children, we steal any and everything we can, we leave rubbish, we live in filth, (go to your search engine, and put in roma caravans just see the filth we live in ) we eat strange things,
we live peacefull romantic lives, we can tell the future, we live in harmony with nature, we have great romantic music, people want to run off with us for the lovely way of life. WAKE UP, WHICH IS IT !

instead, lets moan about who sings and who dont, or who walks across between a singer and an audience, to reach the bog, or the bar, or to go home. aint you bin to a pay loasdsa money concert and people eat crisps , walk about , dance sing shout scream, do ya moan , nah. ifn somthin really aint right dont say nuthin, ifn its somethin that you see as bein wrong ie , he played a bum note, or she used a different word, or sumsuch, all hell breaks loose. Im sorry but i do get wild when i read some of this stuff, and then i get going, i know ive gone off the thread but please folk life is too short.

Well a massive huge thank you to all who came and those that stayed behind, after the dancing finnished, we took repaste within the warm cosy pub, seamus as usual refused to dance or sing so he went home early, obvious and treacle not only got there late but also didnt dance they did however did sing but as they sing above the human hearing spectrum only those with ferret interpretation devices could hear them, they both said a big thank you to virginia tam for thier toy, as did seamus for his lovely apples, the landlady had nothing but praise for all those that turned up and has declared the pub to be a folky pub whenever you want it, previous bookings allowing, once all the monies are counted i will post the amount for demelza, thanks to those that chipped in. sadly late afternoon saw the main bar taken over by bikers from the adjoining pub, but as most singers and players had either gone home or upstairs to the main room, the juke box had to go on, but sharon hopes that it didnt disturb anyone, if it did she is sorry, well april is to be another free folk day, and hope it will be a pre season warm up for you all,

Sorry only blue sunglasses found, Pete i will tell her today tuesday,
the crayford arms as well as being home to the gongscourers morris side, is trying to be an old fashioned pub, with various things going on through the week, all upstairs, often theme meals are laid on, the gongs always have their xmas bash there, there are poker nights, oh loadsa things, they hope to make it also a regular folk venue, so watch this space.

Thanks for picking up my mug ken, I've never left it behind before! I agree with everyone else in that it's a grand pub, great food & beer and a good landlady. I'll look forward to the next one!!

Pleading lunacy. It is a full moon and I did warn you guys.

RM, my dear, you're just going to have to share. I know, I am just another bloody foreigner coming over here taking all the moonwaves.

You would not believe what it was like between my daughters and me a decade ago, when the moon was full. Scary. Even now, I feel it, I've got headache, feel dull and confused and easily upset. Sigh. It will pass in a few days and you can have the village back.

RM - Would you want me round during full moon? I am not nice. In fact I can "curm" with the best of them. But now it's going off the full and I have a bloody sore sore throat. No singing for me for a while so my mood has sunk into doldrums. Sigh.

I need to sit and play with Treacle and Obvious. That'd pick up my spirits. Teehee. Just remembering Upnor and Treacle tipping the glass of beer over has me smiling.

There better already.

Trevor is home, taking it easy. Most of his guitars aren't here, even if he did have the energy for playing. He is writing a blues about heart attacks! It was a good day, apart from the stairs. If they could take that lovely function room down to street level....

Latest on recovering heart patient. I have just scoured the internet for, and printed the leaflet that he imagined he'd brought home from the hospital. He's busy reading it. He's eating less rubbish and more fruit. Sleeping a bit during the day, but going to bed earlier and getting up by 8 am. He musn't go outside in wet and windy weather, so today he's a couch potato refining his aimlessly mooching about indoors skills. Before I saw the dos and dont's I got him to unscrew a jar of pasta sauce. He mustn't do that. He's watching Coronation Street, we haven't watched soaps for about 3 years. Half an hour of Corrie later and he's looking for something else to do. Time for tea.
