Does anyone have the fiddle tune for 'sovay' as played by Dave Swarbrick with Martin Carthy? I've wanted to learn the tune for a while. You can email the sheet music to fiddle_playing_rat@yahoo.com if you would rather (random email address I know).

I tried that, it said 'file not found on this server' or something.

That's because the html isn't valid; some older browsers will interpret the page's link to the stylesheet as an instruction to load the stylesheet rather than the page (hence your error message). Most recent browsers will guess their way round the coding errors and produce the desired result, though.

Actually, that wasn't the problem (though my earlier comments still stand; some older browsers can't access the site at all because it isn't properly coded): the link to that particular song is just wrong.

Hi,
You are right, it doesn't work, but the reason is somewhat obscure.

My site has recently been moved from a Windows server to a UNIX server. Unlike Windows, UNIX filenames are case-sensitive, and the name in the link did not exactly match the real filename.

This works fine in Windows, but not in UNIX. I must have missed this one when I checked the names. Will fix it soon and let you know.

OK, I have fixed it now.

If you DO find any real coding errors, please let me know so I can fix them. (The site is hand-coded so I can only blame myself)

Sorry for that, then. It now works OK on the machines I have tried.
Have you got Javascript turned on? The password system needs this to work.

Its in the Martin Carthy guitar book,He gives a tuning and the tune.
its a useful song book, not much guitar instruction, apart from tunes, possible chords and his tunings, but worth buying.

word of warning if you want to play off the dots given by Sorcha on the JC tunefinder site above - the tune is not (as far as I can tell) in regular time signature so while the notes (pitch and note length) on this site are all correct, the time signature is not. My advice - ignore the bar lines and take the timing/phrasing from a MC recording...

ha, just looked on the folkinfo site and it says exactly what I said above re: time signature, so my message was redundant really :)

one of my favourite things about the MC/DS collaboration is the free rhythm of both singing and accompaniment.

Yeah - I seem to remember Martin Carthy saying that the time signature is "1". Trying to assign bar lengths would lead to insanity; you'd be getting 5; 3; 6; 2; 7 sort of thing...

...I guess you just gotta learn it by ear and then feel it. But ain't that what we folkies do?
