All you Canadian folkers get your entries in for next year.

Eligibility

Artists

Canadian artists who have released recordings between June 15, 2007 and June 14, 2008 are eligible to submit their work for the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Artist eligibility criteria applies to all categories. Canadian artists, for the purposes of this competition, are defined as follows:

1) A Canadian citizen or;

2) A landed immigrant or;

3) A person who has resided in Canada for two years (including the eligibility period).

4) In the case of group submissions, at least 50% of group members must fulfill one of the above definitions of "Canadian artist."
Recordings

The artist/group must submit proof of the date of release and number of units manufactured. This can be done by supplying the CFMA with copies of manufacturing invoices or a letter from the artist's/group's record company or distributor. The CFMA reserves the right to disqualify any recording that does not meet industry standards of recording and packaging. Recording eligibility requirements are different for artists submitting to Young Performer of the Year; see category 19 for specific criteria. The CFMA defines recording eligibility standards as follows:

1) Submitted recordings must be at least 30 minutes in length or feature a minimum of six (6) tracks.

2) A minimum of 300 discs must have been manufactured. Home-reproduced discs are not acceptable.

3) Professionally printed packaging (booklet, traycard, digipack?) is required. Artists may ship their recordings in plastic sleeves instead of jewel cases to reduce shipping costs, but all printed materials must be submitted with the recording.

4) Recordings must fulfill all legal obligations (copyright information, payment of mechanical rights, etc.)

5) Recordings must be commercially available in Canada, either through artist concert sales, retail outlets or via the internet.

And he should be in this year's Awards, without a shadow of a doubt.

I saw them in Canada last summer and they were great.

And I can confirm (cos I have seen their name on a leaflet) they are booked for Shepley Spring Festival.

They are on tour here in May and again the first few days in August.

Genticorum are booked for Sidmouth 2009. I saw them at Towersey a couple of years ago and loved them. They'll be offering workshops, too.

Thank you, Ron...and I hope you've entered 'Insurgent Sun' too, because you should be up for several Awards as well. Both you and Bruce are excellent musicians, and Canada should be darn proud of you both.

I had a chance meeting with a native of Toronto a year or so ago in Durango, Colorado. Bob Canning, a former folk musician in the Toronto scene in the late 1950's, became an acclaimed art director and award winning film and television director before serious horse riding injuries caused him to become a full-time western artist. He grew up in Orillia, just down the street from Gordon Lightfoot. Does anyone recall this name from the Canadian "folk past?"
