Step right up folks, it's hot off the press. A new CD made up of old field recording of stuff I did years ago, and right up to when I started to lose my voice.
Dennis Cook has done an unbelievable job on cleaning up these old recordings and made them fit to sell. We sold a few at the Getaway, and anyone who bought one is welcome to post what they think of it here. The cuts include:
Come by the hills......................Gordon Smith
A $5.00 fine for whining...............Sammy Allred
Field of the willows...................Dave Goulder
Going Away.............................Utah Phillips
The Faded roses of December............Utah Phillips
Before they close the minstrel show....Bob Coltman
The Loch Arcray........................John Masefield
Old Fid................................Bill Lowndes
Whose Gonna buy you ribbons?...........Paul Clayton
The Last Letter Home...................McDade/Brown
Lonesome Robin.........................Bob Coltman
Rye Whiskey Joe........................Bill Staines
Starlight on the rails.................Utah Phillips
The Basque.............................Tom Russell
Song for the animals...................Dave Mallett
The Lock keeper........................Stan Rogers
I remember loving you..................Utah Phillips
I don't look good naked anymore........Sheb Wooley

Bring some Saturday, Captain, I will buy at least one.

Well, about all I can say is that this is Kendall at his best - good songs, well-sung. Classy-looking production, too. I guess he had to wear that damn leather jacket in the cover photo - it seems to have a mesmerizing effect on the womenfolk...
My favorite track is "Starlight on the Rails. What a great song!

Nice job, Kendall.

This project was the result of labor from many people, starting with Jacqui. She got to digging around in old boxes of tapes that I never got around to throwing away. Some of them were recorded in Steve and Terri Messenger's living room in England, some were recorded at bluegrass festivals, and still others were copied from tapes onto CD discs by Judy Barrows.

Dennis Cook did the mastering at his studio in Maryland, and if you could hear the originals you would call him a genius!

BBC, Folk Legacy may have some in the future, but for the time being we are the only source.

I need all buyers to know that there are mistakes and glitches that couldn't be removed. For instance,
In Rye Whiskey Joe, it's two POUNDS of bacon, not cans.If I could do them all over I would.
That sounds like a country song..."If I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you."

Hey... you sound like my Gramma Owens... if she hadn't told everyone while she was serving dessert that she put too much milk in the pumpkin pie by mistake, everyone would have enjoyed it without thinking about the milk.

If anyone called me when I messed up lyrics, I'd just say that's the way my old man used to sing it, rest his poor departed soul.

Who says you can't can bacon anyway?

I am listening to the CD now. It takes me back to that party at Barry Finn's when about thirty people sat in a circle and filled the room with music. All warm and fuzzy. Kendall sang at least a dozen songs including Phoebe Snow. Roger sang Four Little Pigs. John Nolan did The Selkie. Someone did Palace Grand. The Chucks had us rolling on the floor with In My Socks In The Dark.

Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons is worth the cost of the entire CD.
Nicely done, my friends.

We are planning to be at Mystic for the festival, probably doing something in NYC before that and may stay over for a festival the w/e after, depends if Ron can fix himself up with some work whilst he is over as to how long we stay, Martin is retired and I can take time off as I am the gaffer! were you thinking of Maine? Plans are still flexible and going north we would be able to do the beer promo gigs in Falmouth and Gloucester. December would be good to meet up, PM me and see if we can sort something out. oh, and save a cd for me!

Kendall,

I MUST have one too---of course!

Dennis Cook is a miracle worker. He did the same with my recent Folk Legacy CD. The tapes I had were recorded all over in halls large and small. People gave me copies of copies over the years and I tossed 'em in a box where they sat until I gave 'em to Dennis.

I'm looking forward to hearing this.

All the best,

Art

Kendall-

You can always be relied upon to bring home the bacon! No one will be disappointed with this recording. Dennis Cook did a fine job with a variety of recordings from live presentations. These are not studio recordings but "field recording" as you describe them and they are the finest kind.

Ideally I would like to see in the notes where each track came from. But I love this CD.

Charley Noble

Charlie, I have no clue where all this stuff originated because they go back over 30 years. However, I do remember that some of them were recorded in Terri Messenger's living room in 2003, and some of them were recorded at the PORTLAND fOLK CLUB by your dear wife, Judy.

As I mentioned, it all ended up in a box or three never to be seen or heard again until Jacqui got the idea to try to do something with them. I had almost nothing to do with the production, graphics, notes or photos. Not my bag, man.

Well, he had to be there for the photos - I think I took close to 100 before I got one that we all liked. (Ain't digital cameras just the best!) I also bullied Kendall into making short comments about each track - 'bossy as all get out', me!

The graphics team, Judy & Dennis Cook, ClaireBear, and I worked very well together and I was well pleased with the final result.

Kendall-

Actually it was Norris Dale who ran the sound system for the Portland Folk Club and did the recording. Judy was acting as MC at your concert back on March 24, 1994, at Luther Bonney Auditorium and last year transformed the treasured tape to CD format.

I'm now wondering if Nor still has a tape of the Utah Phillips concert where you did the introductory set. I know we didn't necessarily record all concerts but I'll check it out.

Charley Noble

Congrats Kendall - are you singing still? When I saw the thread title I thought perhaps you were back at the recording industry again.

I had one of your earlier CDs, Pheobe Snow was on it as well as the one about the dead lady?? But I made the mistake of giving it to my son-in-law. Never saw that dude, CD, again.

If I was a rich man I'd buy it again and your new one - till then - I am glad you are still putting the music out -

This is the best truly folk recording I've heard in many years. I have listened to it a half dozen times since it arrived here yesterday. There isn't a song on it that doesn't hit me right where I live.

Say, Kendall, realizing that our music is surely the purest form of what we folksingers do and are, putting this CD together from the best of other years' concerts, ones that were, thankfully, tape recorded at diverse venues over your life, well, I'm certain that you had a ball putting it all together along with the amazing Dennis Cook. (Dennis did the same with my last CD too--and working with him and Judy was a hoot.!) "Field Of The Willows" is an astounding statement from the pen of Dave Goulder. The random pageantry of life's ups and downs inherent in those verses is remarkable. That I should hear that song in the same week I also read Bob Coltman's masterful re-telling of Paul Clayton's life in his new biography (Paul Clayton and the Folksong Revival) is just too wonderfully strange.

In the song list of your CD, Kendall, as you know, are two of the finest songs written by Bob Coltman --- "Lonesome Robin" based on the last of all the Robin Hood ballads-- "Robin Hood's Death" and also his song called "Before They Close The Menstel Show" another "Closing time---gentlemen--please" type of song. Actually, now that I think about it, MOST of these songs on this CD are topically on the subject of loss of various kinds. That said, none of the songs are proverbial 'downers.' They all ARE philosophically insightful though! One of the songs is featured in Bob Coltman's book too! That song is Clayton's own composed song "Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone." That is the song Paul Clayton's so-called FRIEND, Bob Dylan, re-wrote to create "Don't Think Twice It's O.K." -- a million seller for Peter, Paul and Mary while Paul Clayton got no credit of any kind.

People, I never heard the Captain sounding better. I've already gone on too long, but I had to say how much we are enjoying this CD.

Love to Kendall and Jacqui --- and to all of you as well!

Art Thieme
