*Bruce Molsky at Edinburgh Folk Club, Wednesday 15th October 2008*

OK, we have a "class act" for you next Wednesday.

"Alone or with fellow musicians; guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades – synthesizing them and refracting them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky's influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues; from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe. "

As you can see, Bruce has his "fingers in a lot of pies" these days but it's great to have him back at Edinburgh Folk Club once again for a long overdue solo gig. Expect an extremely varied evening's entertainment during which Bruce's virtuoso expertise on guitar, fiddle, banjo, and vocals will be displayed to the full.

Venue: Pleasance Cabaret Bar - 8:00pm
Admission: £7.00 (£6.00 concession), Members £5

Bruce is worth travelling a long way to see, and at those prices it's an amazing deal.

A wonderful performer. He used to be a local and I've heard him quite a few times. Don't miss him.

Having seen him perform on the Transatlantic Sessions programmes, I was looking forward to seeing him last Thursday at the Royal Oak in Lewes - alas, ill-health made me miss it... bet he was superb.

Will Fly

bet he was superb.

Indeed he was. Superlative on fiddle, banjo and guitar and he makes it all look so effortless. Then he produces a Hardanger fiddle. "I can't really play this but...". I wish I could not really play like that.

And you can't even hate him for it because he's such a nice bloke.

Bruce Molsky was one of the Guest Artists at the Alaska Folk Festival a few years back. Not only is he good - and I bought one of every cassette he brought with him - but what really impressed me about him was his likability and lack of pretentiousness. He sat and jammed with all of us- and seemed to enjoy it.

Molsky is terrific, and I particularly like his work with the band Andy Irvine put together, Mosaik.

I wonder whether Molsky ever talks to Henry Sapoznik. They're pretty much the same age, very similar backgrounds, both studied with Tommy Jarrell, but Sapoznik gave it away to do klezmer instead, while Molsky stayed with the Appalachian music.

Saw him on Saturday at Washington (Sunderland). What a really great night. Lots of old-timey, bluegrass and Appalachian flavours, with a bit of east European and the aforementioned Scandinavian thrown in, played by a guy who obviously cares deeply about the music and can communicate it really well. Well worth seeing.

Hank Sapoznik plays Klezmer music but he still plays Old Time as well - he helps run the Charlie Poole festival in Eden NC. Bruce and Hank both get to festivals, and I'm sure will have crossed paths a few times.

Ray, I didn't know Sapoznik still did old-time music - thanks for the info!
