"I've been on the run for days." What could I do? I let him in, gave him a warm seat before the fire, and he is now resting comfortably on a pillow near the hearth. His incredible sense of relief upon finding out that we don't even celebrate Thanksgiving in this house was pathetic and heartbreaking to see. How terrible it is that hundreds of thousands of his bretheren in turkey factories and in the fields will not escape the hideous fate that awaits them as the human population, led by maniacs like Sarah Palin, engages in mass murder of this gentle and sensitive species of large bird! Well, I have done my bit. This is one turkey they are NOT going to get. |

They raised a dozen meat birds, for the winter, ended up with a dozen extra mouths to feed. Apparently free range turkeys can be charming individuals with unique personalities and it's very difficult to kill something you feel affection for - unless you are really, really hungry.. |

The guys with rifles couldn't hit anything...maybe it was the booze. They wouldn't give me the turkey I shot, it was a styrofoam decoy, but instead I got a Butterball. They used to charge about $5 (? can't recall) to let kids from 8 to 12 years old get in the field and try to catch a turkey for keeps. I assume that was stopped after the lawsuits. (?) I got one every time. On accounta Dad told me to go after the smallest one. I was a large lad and a 10 to 15 pounder was easy. Then 50 pound restaurant turkeys could kick a man's ass. |

Thanks for health and friends, for employment and safety, and the love of family, not to mention good dogs. Mooh painted the porch window frames, stored the window mount air conditioner which didn't get much use this year, went to the family cottage and cleaned out the eaves, put on the storm windows, hiked, relaxed, played some banjo, kept me amused playing fetch, and let me roll in dead stuff on the beach. And, I got all the leftover turnip... a good sized bowl of it... I figured if I fry the Lard Tunderin Jaysus out of er til almost burnt and add a whack of spuds and carrots, I might just be able to neutralize most of the margerine she mashed into it. We used cabbage from our garden (our carrots and rutabagas aren't ready yet, and we don't have any potatoes planted yet), and it tasted way better than store cabbage. We cooked it in a pressure cooker this time, and that made it even better. This was our sixth anniversary. Ours was the first wedding between two people who met here in the Mudcat, on October 12, 2002. |

How I wish the United States would move Halloween and Thanksgiving into early fall when the weather is nicer and travel is safer. Once I entertained a band from Scotland on Thanksgiving Day. (a Thursday in late November.) They were staying in a downtown hotel, and didn't realize it was a holiday. They gazed amazed at empty streets and skyscrapers with no one in them and wondered if the aliens had finally come and taken everyone away. I told them that Christmas might be bigger in commercial terms, but for most American adults, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday of the year. There were nods of agreement all around the table. |
