As i will soon be in America, I feel compelled to check up on something I vaguely remember hearing a while back:

is it true that Krispy Kreme is no more?

Nope. From their website:

You are hereby invited to any and all Krispy Kreme new store openings! Okay, we know you can't get to them all, but we are continuing to expand around the world and may soon be coming to an area near you. Opening day at a Krispy Kreme store is a fun event and we'd love to have you come by, join in the festivities and experience a Hot Original Glazed fresh off the line! Please check this section of the Web site periodically (we update it regularly) to see if we're planning to turn the Hot Light on near you.

Krispy Kreme suffered financial setbacks a few years ago, after a period of too-good-to-be-true success, but they still exist.

Their problems seem to have come from a combination of two factors: rapid geographical expansion from a relatively small region in the southeast US to a nearly-nationwide presence, and a shift in consumer perference from "trans-fatty" to healthier snacks.

I think the change in the marketplace was sudden but not permanent; many people who were temporarily scared away from donuts eventually weakened and came back.

We never had KK in New Orleans until a few years ago, when the company was expanding like crazy. Only one of several local outlets closed in the wake of the more recent nationwide downturn, the one unwisely located one block away from the famous and iconic Cafe du Monde coffee-and-beignet outlet in the French Quarter. All the suburban KK's in our area are alive and (seemingly) well.

If KK is doing OK in a relatively new market like New Orleans, I'm sure they're surviving in the original home area, centered in North Carolina and extending north as far as Washington DC and as far to the southwest as the Florida panhandle.

I wonder if they've got to South Jersey. Mind, there's always Cinnabon.

There's one at Luton Airport and Bluewater shopping centre in Kent, so never fear, should you become addicted, we can feed your addiction when you get back.

Krispy Kreme Donuts are great when they're hot and fresh. At the women's center where I volunteer, we used to get a lot of day-old donuts donated by Krispy Kreme. They were's so good - kinda like a big, cold lump of fatty dough.
Those of us who grew up in Detroit, know that there is no more satisfying donut experience than eating fresh donuts with cider at the Franklin Cider Mill.

I've been trying to lose weight. So as far as I'm concerned Krispy Kream doesn't exist any more. Maybe after another 15 pounds - we'll see.

They took CT by storm about ten years ago and then quickly melted away :)   I've come across a few little kiosks in convenience stores/gas stations - but they never were my cup of tea anyway.
I think it has been difficult for anybody to attempt any kind of threat on the mighty "Dunkin' Donuts" chain. I don't know what it is that makes those places such a success. They must be the franchise kings of the USA.

KK's are more like sugar with a donut filling. I prefer donuts without all the glazes, fillings, and other nonsense. Dunkin had two great donuts, the plain cruller and the original Dunkin donut, and they discontinued both. Most of the farm stands around here have apple cider donuts for sale. When the season ends, I'll be donut-deprived until next year.

"Dunkin had two great donuts, the plain cruller and the original Dunkin donut, and they discontinued both."

Are you sure about that? Perhaps it is your local Dunkin Donuts? I think they are now calling the "cruller" a "cake stick". When you say "original", are you referring to the plain cake donut they offer?

I much prefer Dunkin over Krispy Kreme, although I admit for awhile I thought Krispy Kreme had them beat - but it was just because they were new to the area. KK is too sweet for my tastebuds, and all their donuts taste alike.

As Joe points out, the great appeal of Krispy Kremes is that they can be purchased absolutely fresh, at least the "original glazed" variety. The typical retail outlet features a donut assembly line in plain view, behind glass. The donuts roll along ~ out of the oven, under a "waterfall" of sugary glaze, flipped over, and then glazed on the other side; employees stand ready to serve' em up immediately.

Other varieties/flavors are not ready immediately, even at the company store. And then the boxed-up Krispey Kremes sold at supermarklets, well, they're not even the same product as far as I'm concerned.

I like watching those fresh doughnut fryers at various festivals, but I get funny looks when I ask for no sugar. I find there's more than enough sugar lurking around the bags and tongs to satisfy my desires.

But then I'm weird.

NOTHING beats a hot Krispy Kreme. We don't have one in Charlottesville any more, but there's still one near Mom by Dupont Circle...

My first visit to Krispy Kreme reminded me of the Homer Price doughnut story. I got tired of KK pretty quick, though - I went back to hamburgers.
Next time I go to DC, I think I'd better go to the Sally L. Steinberg Collection of Doughnut Ephemera at the Smithsonian Institution.

There used to be a great little shop in Atlantic City called Atlantic Doughnuts. Their doughnuts were fried, but they weren't like the batter ones you get in England, they were made from proper, yeasty dough. You went in after church on Sunday, and it was all warm and smelled so yummy.

That place closed at least 25 years ago. Every now and then I still get a craving.

TH's baked goods went way downhill when they stopped making everything on site in Atlantic Canada. Muffins in particular went from glorious light fluffy moist mountains with delicate crisp edges on the tops to heavy stodgy lumps with nowhere near the visual of mouth appeal. Very disappointing, but likely good for my waistline, as I quit eating the things.

EdT.,

You need to normalize the numbers, to be fair.

The donut has a total weight per serving of 57 grams, with 3 protein, 13 fat, 25 carbs, no fiber.

The cinnibon has a higher weight per serving, with 0 protein, 25 fat, 113 carbs and 1.5 fiber ( for about 140 grams per serving, at least.

Two donuts would be 114 grams serving, and 26 grams of fat- vs the 140gram cinnibon with 25 grams of fat.

The donut still wins (overall), but the numbers are not as extreme as it looks.

BB, normalizing is fine, but one eats (or at least I eat) actual items of food, not grams.   I don't buy a Cinnabon and discard a portion in order to bring the calorie/fat/sodium content down to a predetermined level; I eat the whole thing.

Three cake doughnuts, per the breakdown above, would yield 660 calories, still lower than one Cinnabon. Frankly, I find a Cinnabon too large, and too sweet with all the gook on it.

I like the cake doughnuts better in any case. In all likelihood I'd buy and eat two cake doughnuts (440 calories) and eat them, rather than buying a Cinnabon (730 calories).

Dave,

As would I- but that is still 26 grams of fat vice 25 for the entire cinnebon. Just trying to compare ( roughly) equal things.

I recall being told by a doctor how three scoops of ice cream had so much fat and so many calories, but a quarter cup of cottage cheese had so much less- Duh!

Oh for heavens sake, b'ys, make yerselves a nice bannoch with a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon on top. Put raisins or currants in the dough if yez like. A fraction of the calories, none of the preservatives, takes ten minutes to prepare and about twenty to bake.
