Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Soldier boy Date: 27 Apr 09 - 09:03 PM I have been told by Duggs that there will be extra security on the campsite this year. Apart from the local scouts (god bless'em) and stewards on the site there will be 4 extra burly proffesional security guards who will patrol the campsite all night(with walkie-talkies),every night, and will ensure that there is no repeat of any unsociable noise or bonfires that could upset people camping/caravaning/campervaning on the field. That's good news and should allay any fears or concerns of anybody who had any problems last year. Good stuff!! |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Splott Man Date: 28 Apr 09 - 03:44 AM That's excellent news! |

Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Cath Date: 28 Apr 09 - 06:33 PM They are locking up the cutlery at Sid's Cafe!! |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Splott Man Date: 29 Apr 09 - 03:59 AM The Sid's Café people couldn't have been more helpful when we did the workshop there 2 years ago. They leant us extra spoons when we ran out (We reckon we had about 100 people!), and borrowed extra chairs from the church. Unfortunately they didn't do any business while we were crowded around the outside, so it seemed sensible to move since. Splott Man |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Cath Date: 29 Apr 09 - 06:41 AM They are hosting a session on local songs and stories this time but it will be at 6.00 on Saturday when they would normally be closed so that they don't lose business this time. Cath |

Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Tyke Date: 30 Apr 09 - 08:53 AM Harry is missing Muppet as well. He seemed fine last time I saw him down the Abbey in Leeds. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Cath Date: 30 Apr 09 - 06:52 PM For reasons that it isn't appropriate to go into on here the Simon Armitage gig will only be Friday and not Thursday. Anyone wanting tickets should contact Roger Davies - please don't contact Ged as indicated on the publicity. |

Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Soldier boy Date: 03 May 09 - 07:04 PM Like yourselves,GUEST,Tyke and Ray, I hope that Muppett will be at Holmfirth this year. He seems to have slipped off the radar a bit in recent times and seems to be spending more time with his grandchildren. He is a unique individual and is always missed when he is not where we would like him to be. So come on Muppett we would love to see you in Holmfirth next weekend ! |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,cujimmy Date: 04 May 09 - 03:22 AM Muppet was at the Abbey 2 weeks ago, in fine fettle I,m glad to say. I asked him if he still goes for a pint in the Castle in Bradford which was his local, he answered - occasionally. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 04 May 09 - 07:18 AM Muppett did a great job for us running the singaround at Queensbury Music Festival in March and hope he pops up at Holmfirth over the weekend |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,Rob the Roadie Date: 04 May 09 - 08:29 AM Bad news or is it good news you will have to decide for yourselves! Anne cant get to Holmfirth until Saturday morning . Her husband Dixie, He is the musically talented one in the Von Taggart family, is off to London to play piano for some Ballet Dancers exams. Anyway he will drop her off en route. It does mean they will have less time to ruin songs by practicing them! That means you will only have to contend with Angie on the Firday night. Meanwhile I am trying to get our camping stove to work. The pressures of touring!!!! Haven't seen Muppet for years. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,Cuj Date: 04 May 09 - 12:26 PM He's spending far too long out on Ilkley moore by Tat, sat on a mat without a hat, getting fat etc etc |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Hamish Date: 05 May 09 - 08:14 AM Woo hoo! A three day working week, then... ...the joys of Holmfirth! It has already been a folk-encrusted (as in bejewelled) week: Twickenham on Sunday, Chichester tonight, Baldock on Wednesday. And then three days of great company, music and general malarky. Does life get any better? ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: JeZeBeL Date: 06 May 09 - 07:47 AM I'm really looking forward to Holmfirth this year.....I haven't been for a few years and miss it dearly......i'm afraid I happen to be one of the raving maes, so look out for a load of red and black corsets and short skirts walking around Holmfirth!!!! Is there still a noisy camp and a quiet camp as there has been before or is it all quiet by 11pm?? |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,glueman Date: 06 May 09 - 08:49 AM "look out for a load of red and black corsets and short skirts" Who could miss them? Or the opportunity to say - Don't put all your basques in one exit. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Soldier boy Date: 06 May 09 - 11:11 AM There have been various sightings of the illusive and endangered Muppett recently, including last weekends' Moor and Coast Festival. So it looks like he is fit and well (after suffering a serious bout of pneumonia in January this year) and I just hope that he can get along to Holmfirth F of F. For more info of sightings of the lesser-spotted,short-panted,large-haired,ruck-sack-carrying,singing-and-dancing Muppett bird check out the "WHERE'S MUPPETT ??" thread here on Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST Date: 06 May 09 - 03:59 PM Well - I've been told so much about it all - I'm there already (in spirit haha) however - my usual team-mates can't make it .. so I'll just have to dream about it till next time. Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Soldier boy Date: 10 May 09 - 02:03 PM Just got back from Holmfirth and apart from suffering today from a dodgy donner kebab I had last night, I had a brilliant time. And judging by the number of people crammed into the pubs and hotels etc and the great crowds of people out on the streets during the day I,m pretty damned certain that EVERYONE had a great time. What a festival!! I,d like to say a big THANK YOU to the festival committee and to all the stewards and to everyone who volunteered and helped out. You did a fantastic job! |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Hamish Date: 10 May 09 - 02:28 PM Yes - a terrific weekend. Excellent. Well done all - Cath especially, obviously - but all the committee and volunteer helpers; and punters!! ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,glueman Date: 10 May 09 - 02:30 PM V.good. As well as pub sessions managed to see Eliza Carthy and Bellowhead. Thought B'head looked a bit road tired, or maybe their sound was slightly screwed. Still top drawer but not as relaxed as I've seen them before. Also lineup changed - is this permanent or stand in? The Nook was banging on Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 10 May 09 - 04:56 PM Great concert this afternoon in the Old Bridge with Jez & Bad Pennies, Gilmore Roberts & Gerry McNeice amongst others - the only thing I managed to get to but the atmosphere was superb (if a bit warm!) |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,Splott Man at home Date: 10 May 09 - 06:17 PM Just got back after a hectic last 10 miles (M4 closed near Cardiff, detours through Newport and Cardiff with 2 near misses of my own!). Dame Pattie & I had a fantastic weekend - thanks Cath and crew. The extra security seemed to do the trick for the campsite, and the family ceilidh was great fun, and seemed to work better upstairs away from the market stalls (talking of which, no Hawaiian shirt seller this year, I'll have to source my calling shirt for the next 12 months elswhere). Great meeting some new friends and a few old ones too! Roll on next year. Splott Man (cookieless at home) |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Tyke Date: 10 May 09 - 06:19 PM We all had a great time the Landlady, Janet, at the Elephant and Castle had a big smile on her face having sold out of several brands of Beer on Saturday Night, Fresh stocks would be ready for Sunday Lunch Time. Thats Fresh stocks of beer not the Fresh Ken Stocks. A big thank you to Janet for the round of drinks she bought for the all Musicians and singers. Well it's the Beverly Heratage Festival the weekend after next for our Band of Friends. So see you all there? George Clarke |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Soldier boy Date: 10 May 09 - 09:41 PM Where was I when I missed Janets' free round of drinks? damn it! Yes Splott Man the extra security on the campsite did work, except for one incident before they took up their posts on Friday night when one tent was damaged - MINE!! A brand new tent which I only bought on Thursday! Apparently some kid decided to jump or throw himself on my tent for a bit of fun and broke a pole. That pissed me off, of course, but on the plus side one of the campsite stewards took it upon himself to do a repair job on the pole by fixing a makeshift splint to the pole so that the tent was habitable and would not cave in under a heavy downpour. Cath and other organisers, if you read this, please pass on my sincere thanks to this caring and very thoughtful individual. This was a very generous act and above and beyond the call of duty. Well done that man! So, having my faith restored in humanity, I'm not going to complain. But if the committee decide to look kindly on me and offers to compensate me for repair costs or costs of a new tent then please do PM me. I would be very happy to hear from them. Special thanks to Shawn (might be wrong spelling) who took very good care of me when I arrived on the campsite and following the vandal incident. A very fine fellow who did a really excellent job. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Splott Man Date: 11 May 09 - 03:48 AM Soldier Boy, I witnessed it. One of the scouts working on the entrance saw it too, and knew the little ****. Identified as Brian Smith. |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST Date: 11 May 09 - 04:49 AM Hiya, I didn't think my temporary absence from the festival scence would have caused such concern, but it was very touching seeing everyone who had when I was at Holmefirth at the weekend. Great to see and be with you all again.Enjoyed the sessions I took part in on Saturday & Sunday around the Town, these included, the Elephant & Castle, the Bridge, downstairs at the Postcard and of course the Nook. Back at work now with a vey sore throat. The only down side of the event was that I did suffer from the tent attackers in the early hours of Sunday morning, fortunalty it didn't end up like Soldier boy's one though. Any Road great to be back and I'll possibly be at Robin Hood's Bay in a week or 2. Cheers Muppett |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 11 May 09 - 05:17 AM Was great to hear your inimatable and unique Tyke Folk. Welcome back Muppet. Jim |
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th From: Cath Date: 11 May 09 - 08:16 AM Thanks to all for coming. Sorry I missed you Tyke - I never got to look in the Elephant and I never saw you in transit. We've just been round the town and it is all returned to it's former glory - no rubbish, no mess, all clean and tidy. The committee all enjoyed it which says a lot and we've had lots of positive comments so I suppose we'll have to do it again next year!! In the meantime Peter is running his concerts at the Picturedrome, Number 11 is on every other Thursday (this week) with the Open Mic and a new venture has started at Hepworth Village Hall - I can't remember the guest list for this but I do remember that it's good and they do have a web site. See you all next year if not before! x |
