Ah, childhood memories. Guess, of all the 78's that I once had, which one I might have kept? Yes, Roy's version of Pecos Bill. That and one with Bayes and Narworth.

I think we could update that 7th verse so as not to cause offense. Let's see..

While a familial group of Native Americans performed a rather hostile rhythmic ritual

Pecos , with unexpected gunfire, this sacred ceremony did at last defame.

He so disturbed their peace of mind

That, at last, they left their paint behind

And this atrocity gave the Painted Desert it's name.

Clear from Texas to Seattle.
That's the way the Texas roundup got its start.

7. While a tribe of painted Injuns did a war dance,
Pecos started shootin' up their little game.
He gave them redskins such a shakeup
That they jumped out from their makeup.
That's the way the Painted Desert got its name.

8. While reclinin' on a cloud high over Texas,
With his gun he made the stars evaporate.
Then Pecos saw the stars declinin',
So he left one brightly shinin'
As the emblem of the Lone Star Texas State.

That's all I can remember after 50 years -- there's another verse that would not make Native Americans -- or many others -- very happy today.

Song can be found on CD compilation, " Sons of the Pioneers Tumbling Tumbleweeds, The RCA Victor Years, vol 1" 1989 BMG #9744-2-R.

Also it is on a more recent Roy Roger's anthology, which I have seen but do not have. - John

I don't have the lyrics handy, but the Disney video "Melody Time" has the story of Pecos Bill with Roy Rodgers and co. singing. It is the last story on the tape. I wonder if you can just rent the video tape to hear that music?
