Subject: Southern Rag & fRoots for sale
From: GUEST,Cally
Date: 15 Oct 08 - 10:02 AM

Can anyone give me an idea of the going rate for a set of Southern Rag / Folk Roots / fRoots going back to when it went monthly? With or without the CDs which are all in good condition. Is anyone interested? Buyer collect Pontardawe or can deliver to Llantrisant or Gower Folk Club or towns in between.

Whoops.
Misconstrued....Thought the Credit Crunch had arrived on folkie-dom!
Anyway, why would anyone want to buy Mr Anderson?
Difficult to housetrain.
God...The litter tray Hell!

Southern Rag. That use to be an excellent folk music magazine. I didn't know that it was the precursor of fRoots, an advocate for World Music, which I hate. What went wrong?

I'd have thought that the same editor and little-altered editorial team over the past three decades would have been a bit of a giveaway. Are you an associate of WAV to whom music of any provenance other than your own (which I assume to be somewhat WASPish) is an infraction of a narrow and constraining ideology?

Oh dear - we seem to have got away from the original message.

Put them on Freecycle and someone might take them away without charge.

There's a free Sales & Wants board on the Froots web site here

So fRoots is not every body's Magazine of choice , but the unnecessary nastiness in this thread already is totally uncalled for . All Cally wants is some idea of the value of a sizeable chunk of British Folk History .
I personally would be happy to relieve Cally of ALL the Southern Rag copies , if only for BorFolk !

Wouldn't it be fun if Jim Knowledge came on this thread and told us what IAA had to say in the back of his cab about those who think (and not just musically) that there is England . . . and then there is "the rest of the world".

I got rid of about ten-years' worth a few years back. Free to a good home. The "buyer" collected. I can't remember if I suggested a voluntary donation to a charity or not, but at best it was nominal.

At least IAA is not biased against anything Non English , though a LITTLE appreciation of the 'home' scene woudnt do any harm !

Cally

Looks like the answer to your question may well be - nothing! though you could put it on Ebay and see what happens...

I declare an interest in that I deal in folk-related material.

I had a complete set of folk roots from no. 1. to recent 2006 0r thereabouts.

I advertised them on Ebay and out of how ever many years two issues sold - one to an Oyster Band fan and I can't remember the other.

I gave the rest away. Not my best ever deal.

So the short answer in :- unless you are very lucky - not much.

Sorry.

According to Froots readership survey stats 78% of their readers keep their back issues. So possibly many that want them are likely to already have them. Your more likely to find interested people by putting them on their Wants & Sales board than here, I'd say. I sold around 60 or 70 a while back for a quid each, f.w.i.w, while moving house, and now wish I'd kept some of them as I keep wanting to look things up!

I inherited Tony Rose's collection and was thus able to plug the gaps in my own collection caused by absences from the country. At the request of his daughter, I made a donation to a cancer charity.

Passing on read mags to a music school might be useful. I know someone who gave their complete set to the Newcastle Trad Music course.

Just to be serious for a mo.
Your collection is probably worth very little. Maybe the Southern Rag stuff might be.
But, I would agree with other posters. Donate them to a library, school, music society, dentist(!).
There's some good info in them there mags.
No point in keeping them under the bed is there?
Mind you, you could always try the Antiques Roadshow!

Look forward to seeing you on the Tele!
Regards Ralphie

I once gave S.Rag issues 1 - 12 to a (folk club) charity auction. I think they made about £20 - £25.

I'm always surprised how - generally - magazines lose a great deal of their value once they leave the shop. Ebay is full of very cheap mags of all sorts; true, the odd mag will sell for more than its face value, but that is the exception.

You got the double issue with The Waterboys on the cover - maybe 1991 / 1992?

I've got a complete set from when it went monthly so I must have. I don't want to part with single copies yet in case I can sell the whole lot but I won't be leaving it too long.
