Fellside: A L Lloyd Double CD

A L 'Bert' Lloyd was one of the architects of the English Folk Revival. He was a singer, writer and mentor to many of the leading folk artists of today. His interest in folk music started when he was working in Australia in the 1920s. These recordings made in the 1950s are some of the earliest he made of English and Australian songs.

Fellside is releasing this double CD as part of the Bert Lloyd centenary celebrations

Are the Australian songs the LP album he did for Riverside Records in the 1960s?? I think it was called Australian Bush Ballads here in the U.S.

Sorry Derek, The leaflet I was using as my source says it would be launched at the event. Thanks for pointing that out.

That is a brilliant guest list. As good as you would get for three folk festivals and all for £20.00 If only I was able to go.....sigh.....

Certainly, the intention was to launch the book at the Bert day on 15 November. But the EFDSS website makes it clear that the book won't be out by that date. Instead, Dave will be giving a talk about Bert, and Fellside will be launching the aforementioned double CD. I expect there may be a pre-publication offer on the book at the event. The guest list and programme are on the EFDSS website. www.efdss.org

The promos for this double CD have just been sent out. there's an advert in the new fRoots. It will be launched at the Bert day at cecil Sharp House on 15 November, when Paul Adams of Fellside will give a talk on Bert's recordings.
There will be some Bert related features in the next issue of English Dance & Song magazine (blatant plug... if Dave Eyre can do it, so can I!!)

It is quite possible that some of the Australian songs could be from an early Topic LP called "Outback Ballads" as he used the above musicians on that recording. Anyway it sounds a must have album.

I don't have this compilation yet either, but I collected the available information at my website at Ten Thousand Miles Away.

In short, the tracks seem to be from two 78" HMV records, the Riverside LP "English Street Songs", the Topic LP "The Singing Sailor" and the Wattle records "Convicts and Currency Lads", "The Banks of the Condamine and Other Bush Songs" and "Across the Western Plains".

No idea - I suspect the launch will be at the Lloyd concert on 15th at C# House. I probably got mine early for the radio show I do - I will play a track tomorrow.

They are very friendly at Fellside - I am sure they would reply to any emails.

Those lovely people at Fellside have published a wonderful new record of A.L. Lloyd called "Ten Thousand Miles" subtitled "English and Australian Folk Songs, Recordings from the early days of the folk revival".

It is a two disc set with English Songs on one disc and Australian songs on the second disc. To be sold at the price of one CD so really good value.

Some rare tracks and some great singing by Bert. All sorts of accompanying musicians: Alf Edwards on all the English songs; Peggy Seeger; Ralph Rinzler and others on the Australian songs.

Excellent value for money.
