Subject: Gordon Bok 'Another Land' concert Maine From: maeve Date: 17 Oct 08 - 10:53 AM " 'Another Land Made of Water', Gordon Bok's inspired work written in 1979, is the musical story of a magical and mysterious encounter with sea dwelling people. On Saturday, October 18, 7:00 PM at the Bucksport Performing Arts Center, come hear this magical presentation narrated by Gordon and Mary Bok, accompanied by 10 instrumentalists and 80 singers from 3 midcoast-area choruses – Voices Unlimited, Quasimodal Chorus, and Voices for Peace. This chronicle of a storm on a small island and the encounters and revelations it brings has been described as a "shimmering tapestry of interwoven music and a truly indescribable story." Tickets are just $15 and are available at The Orland Market, Bookstacks in Bucksport and from WERU by calling 469-6600." (From the WERU Community Radio site, WERU link here ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gordon Bok's site, here ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm sorry to be posting this so close to the performance. I was away unexpectedly and since I returned I've been busy rehearsing for the chorus parts I didn't even think of posting it until Sinsull mentioned it me this morning. It's an amazing composition with amazing instrumentalists; Gordon himself, Cindy Kallet, Grey Larsen, Matt Szostek, Anne Dodson, Carol Rohl, Paul Schaffner...with two talented high school students adding cello and another flute. Rich fare indeed. |

Subject: RE: Gordon Bok 'Another Land' concert Maine From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Oct 08 - 12:35 PM Definitely. I wonder where we could get the space for a performance? We saw this earlier this year - if I wasn't otherwise engaged I would be there like a shot. A fabulous work. |

Subject: RE: Gordon Bok 'Another Land' concert Maine From: Art Thieme Date: 18 Oct 08 - 05:36 PM Another Land Made Of Water is simply an astounding work. Along with Gordon's "Play Of The Lady Odivere" I have it on my CD player quite often. Gordon created a vivid world with his words and music---both in what he says, and in what he leaves unsaid between the lines! Kevin Costner TRIED and failed to do this on screen. But be prepared to be transported to Gordon's whole other reality if you treat yourself to this experience. WHOOPS, I just realized the performance is tonight!!! Whew! Nobody will read this in time, but I'll leave it just because it is a chance to, once again, be sort of in touch with some old friends. Be sure to give our love to Mr. Bok---and all concerned! Subject: RE: Gordon Bok 'Another Land' concert Maine From: maeve Date: 18 Oct 08 - 11:16 PM It was an evening of musical magic, with the words weaving in and out throughout. Art will be happy to know that Gordon was in good form, and managed to play various guitars, sing, and speak in turn, while relating to the audience in his friendly way. The two conductors, instrumentalists and three choruses worked very well together, and we all had nearly as much fun as the delighted and devoted audience. I can't think of anything that's more satisfying than singing Gordon Bok's music- except singing his music along with him. As for "The Play of Lady Odivere"- oh my, yes. Gorgeous, and you should see the giant hammer dulcimer that was played in that! |
