Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Julia Date: 23 Oct 08 - 11:41 PM Yup, I've sold at Old Songs the past 2 yrs. Will be at NEFFA 2009 and some DC craft shows Mooh, I'm confused. How is one PM-ed? |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: Booklynrose Date: 21 Oct 08 - 09:43 PM Are you the one who was selling crafts at Old Songs? I saw pretty hair ornaments and napkin rings. I think in 2006 Shelley Posen had gotten an intricate woven finger ring of guitar strings. Did you make that? |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Mooh Date: 21 Oct 08 - 12:05 AM Sure, as soon as I have my computer back so that I don't have to be a guest around here, I'll PM you. Thanks for the offer. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Julia Date: 20 Oct 08 - 02:39 PM Hey Mooh, if your daughter wants more beads I've been saving them and haven't decided how to use them yet. I'd be happy to mail them. And maybe I'll cover and existing hard case. Begins the Craig's List search, the goal being not to have to buy an expensive case to cover :) |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Mooh Date: 20 Oct 08 - 09:08 AM Interesting co-incidence. Just this weekend my daughter was asking for guitar string ball ends to use in bead work. I had many on hand as all I had to do was empty some homemade shakey eggs. Since I use mostly D'Addario strings, the beads are all coloured. Reduce, reuse, recycle. I sent her the link above. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: Sorcha Date: 19 Oct 08 - 06:42 PM Julia, why not try 'covering' an existing hard case with the stuff? Then you wouldn't have to worry about lining and all that. |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Lisa Null Date: 19 Oct 08 - 04:28 PM I just went to Julia's website to have a look. I saw her making neat Christmas balls at the Getaway, but i wasn;t prepared for what she has on display. Great stuff! I've just ordered two Celtic knot pendants for Christmas presents. One, at least, was made from a single recycled guitar string. beautiful and elegant. |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Julia Date: 18 Oct 08 - 04:15 PM Thanks :) I'd like to make an instrument case next (maybe something small and managable, like a uke) but I got worried because it would'n't be weather proof and I'd have to line it with something because the strings are scratchy... |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: olddude Date: 17 Oct 08 - 09:14 PM I think the art is sooo cool ... very creative ... wow |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: Bill D Date: 17 Oct 08 - 06:31 PM Well, I'm glad Kathy M. saw them. *smile* I'll look more closely in December.. |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,julia Date: 17 Oct 08 - 05:50 PM yup, I would have been glad to show you but I was a little too absorbed to notice people. I got chided for ignoring the Friday night doo wop because of that :) |
Subject: RE: instruments made into art! From: Bill D Date: 17 Oct 08 - 05:34 PM So that's what I saw Julia making at the Getaway! It looked fascinating, but I didn't press her for info. (She sings, too!) |

Subject: instruments made into art! From: GUEST,Julia Date: 17 Oct 08 - 02:10 PM Hi! I was at the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's Getaway and someone suggested this would be interesting to people on mudcat so.... I've been making all sorts of things out of used guitar and other instrument strings. I get them from people like you (and from a few instrument repair people, like Bob Jones in Bklyn and Bob Smakula in Elkins WV). It's so much fun and part of the fun is being approached by people w/ enthusiastic suggestions, so if you have an idea, let me know! You can look at my stuff at: stringcycle.etsy.com I don't visit mudcat very often but it's a reassurance to know it's there. Hope you don't mind my not-technically-on-topic posting :) Julia |
