Subject: ADD: Robin Was a Ploughboy From: GUEST,Murray on Saltspring Date: 22 Oct 08 - 01:03 AM I very much doubt this is traditional, though some bits of it are. E.G. "never let a [fellow] an inch above your knee" is a pretty common trope, that you find in songs like "Up among the Heather" and "The Dundee Weaver". Or this, got from an elderly lady in 1964, learned in Lanarkshire c. 1910 maybe. ROBIN WAS A PLOUGHBOY 1. Robin was a ploughboy, he was a sporting blade, He whistled and he sang till he came to yonder shade, There he spied a dark-eyed damsel, and she had her maidenhead, Which to him was more enticing than the curls upon her head. 2. O, they walked and they talked till they came to yonder grove, There was nothing to annoy them but a little whistling bird; There he laid that fair maid down, and before she was aware, He had gi'en to her a something for to rowe among her hair. 3. Come a' ye pretty fair maids, a warning take frae me, Never let a ploughman an inch above yer knee; For he'll tickle ye, he'll tease ye, he'll tell ye a' that's fair, Then he'll gi'e to ye that something for to rowe among yer hair. |

Subject: Tune Req: The Glasgow Barrowland traditional scots From: GUEST,BarrasBoy. Date: 18 Oct 08 - 06:30 PM Hi, i am looking for a scottish cd compilation with the song "The Glasgow Barrowlands" on it sung by either Eddi Reader or another. or even any other compilation it may be on. I know there is one out ther, i just cant find the title. It is a very funny song and holds special memories for me! Can anyone help me please???? Kindest Regards. Oh, it was at the Glasgow Barrowlands, he asked me for a dance. I knew he was a fly man but I had to take a chance. The mirror ball was sparkling. The band played 'The Last Waltz'. And after the dance was over, he asked to take me home. CHORUS: Dup dar di di de rah loolah, etc Oh, it was at the Glasgow Barrowlands, into his arms I fell. He promised me silks and satins, and a diamond ring as well. I got no silks and satins. I got no diamond ring. All I got was a cradle for to rock the baby in! CHORUS Now listen, all you good girls, and take a tip from me: Never let a chancer, an inch above yer knee! |
