I believe this song was written by Steve Goodman along with J.B. I'll dig it out in a while---but not right away.

While Art's looking, I'll try to help with lyrics and chords. Lyrics are words and chords are harmonius note groupings such as you might play on guitar or autoharp. Hope that was helpful................

kittyfoot-- That was very helpful. Here I thought leer-icks were the noises Italian men made while staring at ugly girls on the street...

Geetz Romo-- Have you tried www.margaritaville.com? That's Senor Buffet's website, and I think there's a link to some of his lyrics there. I'm married to a certified parrot-head (unfortunate medical condition aside, he also likes Jimmy Buffet a lot) I'll ask him where he keeps the emergency lyrics around the house. PJ

This song is off the "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes"
albumn.
(Note to guitarists: I was sick of trying to figure out the chords
to the 4th line of the chorus. I finally had a suggestion
from a friend, so I put his best guess there.)

Banana Republics
================
By Steve Goodman\Jim Rothermel\Steve Burgh
(As performed by Jimmy Buffett)
 G Am
Down to the Banana Republics, down to the tropical sun,
D G
go the expatriated Americans, hopin' to find some fun.
G Am
Some of them go for the sailing, caught by the lure of the sea.
D G
Tryin' to find what is ailing, livin' in the land of the free.
G Am
Some of them are running from lovers, leaving no foreward address.
D
Some of them are running tons of ganja,
G
some are running from the I.R.S.

(Chorus:)
Dm
Late at night you will find them,
Am
in the cheap hotels and bars,
C G C G D G
hustling the senioritas while they dance beneath the stars.
Dm Eb |x68886| D
Spending those renegade pesos on a bottle of rum and a lime,
C G
singin' give me some words I can dance to,
C G D7 G
or a mel - ody that rhymes.
2.
First you learn the native customs,
soon a word of spanish or two.
You know that you cannot trust them,
'cause they know they can't trust you.
Expatriated Americans, feelin' so all alone,
telling themselves the same lies
that they told themselves back home.

(solo) -play - G Am D G - Dm Am C G C G

Down to the Banana Republics, things aren't as warm as they seem,
none of the natives are buying any second-hand American dreams.
(repeat chorus)

Down to the Banana Republics, down to the tropical sun;
go the expatriated Americans hopin' to find some fun.
(repeat chords and fade)

My husband has a brother, his brother has a wife. The wife has a niece who had three good friends of long standing. One terrible day, one of them committed suicide. They couldn't get over it.

Finally they got the idea of moving to Costa Rica, where nothing would be familiar. After six months, the niece moved back home, but last I heard, the others were working there, and they were not only speaking Spanish but thinking in Spanish.

Not everybody who changes countries deserves to be sneered at.

Here's my transcription from a Steve Goodman live recording. There are a few words different from the Digital Tradition - I marked them in bold.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvktfcfP7UY

BANANA REPUBLICS
(Steve Goodman )

Down to a Banana Republic, down to the tropical sun.
Come all the expatriated Americans expecting to have some fun.
Some of them come for the sailing drawn by the lure of the sea.
To cure the spirit that's ailing from living in the land of the free.
Now, some of them are running from lovers, leaving no forward address.
And some of them are running marijuana, and some are running from the IRS.

Late at night you can see them in the cheap hotels and bars.
Hustling the senoritas as they dance beneath the stars.
Spending the renegade pesos on a bottle of rum and a lime.
Singing, give me some words I can dance to and a melody that rhymes.

Once you learn the native customs and a word of Spanish or two.
Then you know you can't trust them because they know they can't trust you.
And down in Banana Republics it is not always as warm as it seems.
When none of the natives are buying any second-hand American Dreams.
The Expatriated Americans are feeling so all alone.
Telling themselves the same lies that they told themselves at home.

And late at night you can see them in the cheap hotels and bars.
Hustling the senoritas as they dance beneath the stars.
Spending the renegade pesos on a bottle of rum and a lime.
Singing, give me some words I can dance to and a melody that rhymes.
