If you have problems finding them locally, Welsh shawls (nursing shawls) can be bought from several of our mills - and I'm pretty sure they're available at the Folk Museum in Cardiff as well. I may be calling in there tomorrow; if so, I'll check the prices. They look like the ones as per the link provided.

Be a bit heavy for warmer climes, I would think, although they might be producing them in some lighter weights these days.

I remember the Mary Ellens Liverpool street flower sellers) and their characteristic shawls from my childhood.
One of the best known, Lizzie Christian, pictured here had a famous pitch in Clayton Square until having to move from her regular spot outside what was then the new St. John's Precinct

They still make shawls in Lancashire, though they all seem to be for the export market these days. Shawls had largely morphed into Hilda Ogden headscarves when I were a lad, though some of the old-timers still wore them.

A couple of female friends are off to visit a country with a fairly traditional Muslim population. They intend to comply with local dress codes- no point in stirring up animosity- and I suggested that using a Lancashire shawl as a head covering would be both polite to their hosts and incorporate traditional English dress. You can see some in the Mitchell and Kenyon collection. But I haven't been able to find a source for them so far. Anyone know of one?
