In Calgary, the Humane Shelter has two Great Pyrenees up for adoption. Wish I still had acerage.

Dear gods...I can see at least 3 breeds in there...maybe more. Lab, Dalmation, Great Dane..so who didn't spay the girl there?

They sure don't look to ME like full blood anythings...nice big feet tho. Sorry, but I don't want one.

Well I think they may be Sorch.....Remember that Danes come in a few different colors and the Dalmation coat, known as a Harlequin Great Dane is one of the most striking adult dogs of any breed. I noticed too a couple of Blue Merle pups, a color dear to my heart!

My friend Wayne loves Danes and has owned several. His last one, Tory, was just the biggest sweetheart of a guy you could ever meet. They actually make very good house dogs and are well suited to indoor life. As it sometimes is though, they have a very short life expectancy due to their size and to find one much past 8 or 9 is pretty rare. They require training and exercise of course and not all of them are alike but overall this is a wonderful breed when raised and trained properly.

I do agree with Sorch on the spay situation, my guess from the film is that this is a BYB which many of us would like to see go away entirely along with the puppy mills and pet stores which sell dogs.

Well, they are full-blood according to what I've heard and the people who breed her were not expecting such a large litter. They have a little over two acres, so some room to run, though the puppies are living inside and being potty trained. My daughter's coworker may be going to look at them, so I might know more after that happens.

Sorry....Yeah, back yard breeder. Most do not stand behind the dog, use a contract, check out the potential owner, offer health guarantees, subscribe to pre-breeding health checks, follow the guidelines of breed association standards, etc. I know they aren't all bad but they are a major "source" of dogs in rescues and we have way too many of those.

Sorry......Should have let the political crap out of this. CUTE PUPS!!!!!! Karen and I have often talked of a Dane.............Great looking pups!

Have the Guiness record people checked this one out? What's the largest litter size that's at all common? Both the litter size as such, and the apparent fact that all of them seem to be hail and hearty, leave me just about astounded. Maybe I would be less so if I were more of a canine expert. Other than that... ain't they cute : ).

We have a sticker over here "A dog is for life, not just for Christmas". Those huge paws and appealing play habits translate into a dog needing up to 1kg (sorry that's 2 lbs-ish) of dogfood a day, + a lot of exercise, and something to do, if it is to lead a fulfilling life.

And it's a dog that can comfortably rest its head on your worktop (counter) - and will not hesitate to do so if there's anything edible or even toy-like on there.

Be around some grown up Danes if possible before you take a puppy home.

Having said which, if I had room for another dog-basket, and was that side of the pond, they are gorgeous. And Danes do come in a huge variety of markings so I don't think there's necessarily been any hanky-panky.

There were two Danes in Jackson Heights who got out occasionally. One was brown; the other dalmation colored. One day I turned a corner and both of them were coming at me at about forty miles an hour. I froze and they went around me. It was a stampede. Beautiful puppies but too big to be living in an apartment.

frogp - according to the newspaper, the largest litter ever was 24; this litter was 19, with 16 surviving.

Yes, I know Danes come in several colours....but they still don't 'look' like full blood Danes to me. It 'might' be that I am so used to cropped ears on the Danes. It might also be that they are too young to have the 'typical Dane' face. I've never seen young Dane puppies.

Before Kyla gave birth, Stephanie Pino thought the Great Dane looked like a white cow with brindle spots.

Pino knew Kyla's litter was going to be large, but she had no idea how large.

After about 20 grueling hours of labor, Kyla gave birth to 19 puppies on Sept. 11. Sixteen of the puppies survived and are happy, healthy five-week-old bundles of joy at 12 to 15 pounds apiece.

"They just kept coming and coming and coming, and we were like, 'Oh my gosh,' " Pino said.

She had to deliver some of the puppies after the mama got too tired. Even the dogs' veterinarian was shocked at the size of the litter, Pino said.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the record number of puppies in one litter is 24. It just so happens that also was a Great Dane litter.

The Pinos are overwhelmed, to say the least.

"We were not prepared for two and a half litters worth of pups," Pino said.

They prepared for maybe 11 or so puppies.

Feeding, training, cleaning and caring for 16 puppies is draining, both physically and financially.

The puppies have gone through 1,600 puppy training pads, on which dogs learn to do their "business." That's 32 bags of 50 pads.

During the first weeks, the Pinos supplemented the puppies' diet with $200 to $300 worth of formula for puppies.

Pino said she's spent her nights sleeping in a recliner so she can be near the puppies, especially since they've learned how to escape from their pen in the dining room of her Fruitvale home.

The head of the puppies' daddy, Haze, is bigger than the entire body of one of his offspring. Haze weighs in at more than 200 pounds. When he stretches out, he's roughly seven feet long. The Great Dane is one of the tallest dog breeds in the world.

The Pinos live on 2 1/2 acres of land, so there's plenty of room for the dogs to roam and play.

There are 10 male and six female puppies, each with corresponding blue and red collars. Their coat colors range from black to harlequin (white with spots) and blue with spots.

Each puppy has a distinct personality, Pino said. Not all have names, but four do.

Frank, named after Frank Sinatra, has blue eyes and is the loudest of the bunch. Penelope is an escapist and has a piggish face. Ocho was the eighth puppy born alive and has a spot on his foot that looks like the No. 8. Pearl starts fights, but doesn't finish them, and she was once the whitest of the bunch.

Owner of a 16-week-old cocker spaniel here. And no, I wouldn't want anything much bigger.

Puppy socialisation has involved labs, labradoodles, a sharpei and an elkhound. As lovely as most of those dogs were (with the possible exception of the sharpei which was as thick as it was ugly and drooling - it didn't have a nasty personality because it was simply too stupid to have *any* personality!), they were clearly being buggers to train, especially for the female owners, because they were already large animals at 12 weeks and it's harder to keep control over something that can already pull more than you can.

We're considering a lab as a second dog when the spaniel is a bit older, but we'll see how we go with the first one for the moment!

Although she can be a right little madam at times, we were quietly smug when the woman running the puppy socialisation classes asked if anyone wanted to change their puppy after we'd all had a go at handling other people's dogs, and most of the group said they wanted our little Judi. :-) It's all about the big floppy ears, the teddy-bear paws and the silky coat - there's not much cuter than a spaniel puppy.
