Subject: Lyr Req: vaguely remembered comedy song From: GUEST,Guest Mudcatter Date: 22 Oct 08 - 09:26 AM Can any 'catter recall the words of a 1940/50's song in which some of the lyrics were " A wise man once said What's in a name, A Rose is a Rose is a Rose" and "If your name is Albert they call you Al and if they don't know your name they call you Pal". These are just two lines from a novelty/comedy song heard in the mid 1950's. I can recall the tune ok but not the words. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: vaguely remembered comedy song From: Jacob B Date: 22 Oct 08 - 09:46 AM One possibility is the song "Rosie" from the musical Bye Bye Birdie. It has the line "I once heard a poem that goes: 'A rose is a rose is a rose'". The character who sings it is named Albert. Lyrics are available here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: vaguely remembered comedy song From: GUEST,Guest Mudcatter Date: 23 Oct 08 - 11:57 AM Thank You for the response Jacob B, none of the words I am looking for are in the source you posted. I am certain that the song I heard did not come from a stage show, but was a comedy song distributed on a 78 rpm waxing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: vaguely remembered comedy song From: Jayto Date: 23 Oct 08 - 02:08 PM The Pirate song by Ray Stevens. I used to laugh hysterically whenever I heard as a kid. I thought that was the funniest song I had ever heard back then. He released it in the 80's and I was a kid when I first heard it. I haven't heard it in years so I can sweat it is funny now but back then oh God it was hillarious to me. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: vaguely remembered comedy song From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Oct 08 - 07:41 PM "A rose is a rose is a rose" is a reference to a poem by Gertrude Stein if that is any help; it's the only line of her poem that crept into pop culture, which might have pleased her, or not! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
