There are so many necrophilia songs out there.
Wednesday 13 has made a career out of necrophilia songs. Check out any music by him and any bands he has fronted - Murderdolls, Maniac Spider Trash, Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13..
Also, try Texas Drag Queen Massacre and Misfits, they have good necrophilia songs.

OK, here's one like nothing you've heard before: a necrophilia song from the point of view of the corpse.

It's called Last Ditch Protocol by Elyse Weinberg from a great mid-60's lp simply called Elyse. It was reissued on cd recently on Orange Twin Records. (with two added bonus tracks--including one with a very young Neil Young on guitar).

Last Ditch Protocol is about a woman in her grave seducing her (live) love, Sir JOhn Velveteen, to come and "love me again". And in the end it looks like she succeeds. (Who is this I see coming......."It is Sir John Velveteen down on his knees".).

I seem to recall the verse of a bawdy song being sung by some "yahoos" at sporting event dinner I was invited to attend. The essence of the tale was about a certain person from the capital of Balkan country, in his early years, who came upon the corpse of a lady of easy virtue in a fissure in the country. It would appear he had his way with this unfortunate woman and when asked how he plucked up the courage to do such a thing he considered it a very economical way of satifying his lust. I believe from a vague memory it started something like this.
"There was a young man from Belgrade----"

Among the bawdy songbag are maybe half a dozen songs dealing with the necrophilia theme, largely black-humorous. Among them "Dead Whore" comes to mind, and the limerick most of us remember "There once was a hermit named Dave / Who kept a dead whore in his cave ..."    As this is a family thread, I will leave it there. But it's worth noting that bawdry is an active source of such things.

The impulse behind this is not romantic love, but religious ecstasy. Still it comes out sounding much the same thing.

George Whitefield, a preacher associated with the 19th century Great (religious) awakening wrote it to be sung at his funeral. The DT has 2 verses. The complete version is six verses long. But the first verse is the one closest to the necrophiliac urge:

OH LOVELY APPEARANCE OF DEATH

I am thinking that this must most certainly be a sad symptom of what I like to call Touchy-Feely-oma!

The disease is a direct result of singing treacly folk songs incessantly---things like Dancing With Bears, Amazing Grease, and quite a few---er, no -- just about all --- religious songs. There is no better way to explain the term "The quick and the dead." It's those fast women. Anbd thank god for them...

Frank Proffitt, speaking of his ballad 'Song of a Lost Hunter' - a version of 'Young Hunting' - detailed a family tale that went with the ballad: "As gruesome as it may sound, she (the 'evil woman') took Heneree to her bed to make love after stabbing him."

This isn't mentioned in the actual ballad lyric, nor in any other version, but the idea that such a tale should be handed down along with the ballad is interesting to anyone who wants to consider what the songs meant to the traditional singers who sang them.

I think Malcolm Douglas's definition can be expanded to include attraction (sexual or otherwise) to all things associated with death. I suppose songs about burial grounds, undertakers etc regret rather than take delight in death. I used to have an EP 'George Melly Sings Doom' and seem to remember there was a song; 'I'm going down to the cemetery'

There will certainly be modern songs, but none, I think, from English-language tradition. Necrophilia is a well-defined term (it doesn't mean merely having sex with somebody who just happens to be dead, but being sexually attracted -whether in theory or practice- to the dead because they are dead), and in the occasional ballad in which somebody has, or may be assumed to have, sexual relations with a revenant, they are never aware at the time that their lover isn't technically alive; so those don't count.

If the person who asked you was misusing the word simply to mean 'sexual relations with somebody who later turns out to have been dead', then there's 'Sweet William's Ghost' and its Irish broadside derivative 'Willy O', arguably. The motif occasionally turns up in forms of 'The Grey Cock', but in those cases it has invariably been imported from another song; 'The Grey Cock' isn't natively a supernatural ballad at all, but an ordinary night-visiting song.

I was asked last week if I knew any songs about necrophilia - I was miffed to admit I don't. Not in the real sense, anyway. The necrophiliac is the one with the desire/interest for erotic contact with corpses.

There are many vaguely touching on it but 'kissed her clay cold lips' is just to say goodbye and revenants don't seem to reveal they are dead until much later...that is, the live person hasn't actively sought out the sex (if any), they got caught up this once.
