Wow.
There are so many necrophilia songs out there.
Wednesday 13 has made a career out of necrophilia songs. Check out any music by him and any bands he has fronted - Murderdolls, Maniac Spider Trash, Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13..
Also, try Texas Drag Queen Massacre and Misfits, they have good necrophilia songs.

OK, here's one like nothing you've heard before: a necrophilia song from the point of view of the corpse.

It's called Last Ditch Protocol by Elyse Weinberg from a great mid-60's lp simply called Elyse. It was reissued on cd recently on Orange Twin Records. (with two added bonus tracks--including one with a very young Neil Young on guitar).

Last Ditch Protocol is about a woman in her grave seducing her (live) love, Sir JOhn Velveteen, to come and "love me again". And in the end it looks like she succeeds. (Who is this I see coming......."It is Sir John Velveteen down on his knees".).

There was a fine Song Challenge back in the day about a corpse who came to in the morgue.

I believe my entry was right here and went like this:

As I was strolling through the city's mortuary,
A'sipping of a whiskey-flask, and humming something airy,
I paused in reflection at the corpses all around me
And thought of one called Jenny, whose beauty did astound me

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

She was pale and she was lovely, and her hair fell down like water,
The fairest of them all, Missus Riley's deadest daughter,
She had found herself young Donald, and a trouseeau very bridal,
But the bloody git   had left her, and she'd gotten suicidal

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

My thought was interrupted, then, by a gentle distant mumble
That came from in the body bag where Jenny's corpse had tumbled!
The hairs on me neck stood up, like a little frightened nipper!
And I rolled out young Jenny's drawer and I opened up her zipper!

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

Well her eyes were very bloodshot, from the poison that she'd taken,
But when she started rolling them, I was seriously shaken!
But I kept my wits about me, and rose to the situation,
And I took her in my arms, using mouth resuscitation!

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

Well the whiskey I'd been drinking got into her lungs directly,
And it wasn't very long before she began to breath correctly,
She climbed down from that morgue display, in a manner most attractin'
And the color in her cheeks prevoked a mostly male reaction,

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

It has been a month or more, since we met that evening fateful,
And for my ministrations, Little Jen has proved most grateful.
So of a chilly night, now, in me walk up pad in Leicester,
You can see the blankets moving, as I do my best to test her,

Whack, Jump, Jehosophat!
Whack, Jump, Jehosphat!
There's a gurgle from the bag!

"Happily Ever Cadaver" - Wednesday 13

"A Little Piece Of Heaven" - Avenged Sevenfold

But those are just my favorites on the subject . . . . .

Hi Abby.

If you remember Paul Agutter, he wrote a song about necrophilia to the tune of "The Wild Colonial Boy", and I think I remember Jenny singing it in the Crown.

Necrophilia, necrophilia,I like em bester when the're startin to fester,
Necrophilia, necrophilia, get someone dead into your bed, get with necrophilia now. Made me feel quite ill at the time as I recall.

The Chorus from a song by a good friend:

When I See'z her in my freezer
She sends a chill all up and down my spine
When I first saw that cadaver, I know I had to have her
And love on the rocks is gonna suit me fine.

Not a song; but definitely folklore. "Collected" from a bus shelter in London Road, Derby UK in about 1982:

There was a young fellow called Dave
Who dug up a whore from a grave-
She was covered in shit and had only one tit,
But think of the money he saved!

Marie Hare sings an amazingly different elongated version of the ballad "LOST JIMMY WHALEN" on the wondrous Folk Legacy recording called something like BALLAD SINGERS ON SHARON MOUNTAIN. (Sandy, please HELP!!) Whatever, it seems to have the lovers, the ghost of Jimmy and his mourning lover, making love in the grave if my memory is correct...

I seem to recall the verse of a bawdy song being sung by some "yahoos" at sporting event dinner I was invited to attend. The essence of the tale was about a certain person from the capital of Balkan country, in his early years, who came upon the corpse of a lady of easy virtue in a fissure in the country. It would appear he had his way with this unfortunate woman and when asked how he plucked up the courage to do such a thing he considered it a very economical way of satifying his lust. I believe from a vague memory it started something like this.
"There was a young man from Belgrade----"
I am afraid the rest deserts me!!

Also (for completeness) ...

Among the bawdy songbag are maybe half a dozen songs dealing with the necrophilia theme, largely black-humorous. Among them "Dead Whore" comes to mind, and the limerick most of us remember "There once was a hermit named Dave / Who kept a dead whore in his cave ..."    As this is a family thread, I will leave it there. But it's worth noting that bawdry is an active source of such things.

The impulse behind this is not romantic love, but religious ecstasy. Still it comes out sounding much the same thing.

George Whitefield, a preacher associated with the 19th century Great (religious) awakening wrote it to be sung at his funeral. The DT has 2 verses. The complete version is six verses long. But the first verse is the one closest to the necrophiliac urge:

OH LOVELY APPEARANCE OF DEATH

(George Whitefield)

Oh, lovely appearance of death,
What sight upon earth is so fair?
Not all the gay pageants that breathe
Can with a dead body compare.
In solemn delight I survey
A corpse when the spirit is fled
In love with the beautiful clay,
And longing to lie in its stead.

Also, though it's not a folk song, Poe's "Annabel Lee" is surely one of the most astonishing lyrics along these lines.

How about the last verse of this song:
LITTLE DARLING, PAL OF MINE
(A. P. Carter, © 1927-28)

In the night, while you lay sleeping,
Dreaming of your amber skies,
Was a poor boy broken-hearted,
Listening to the winds that sigh.

CHO: My little darling, oh, how I love you!
How I love you, none can tell.
In your heart you love another,
Little darling, pal of mine.

Many a day, with you I've rambled.
Happy hours with you I've spent.
For I had your heart forever,
But I find it's only lent.

There's just three things I could wish for:
That's my casket, shroud, and grave.
And when I'm dead, don't weep for me,
Just kiss these lips that you betrayed.

Zombie Jamboree by Conrad Eugene Mauge, Jr.

Chorus: Well, now, back to back, belly to belly,
well, I don't give a damn 'cause it doesn't matter
really, back to back Belly to belly at the zombie
jamboree.(Repeat) (Now hear the chorus) (You can
feel that) (Oh, what a good game)(You're all
alone, you know)

Zombie jamboree took place in a New York cemetery
(Where?) Zombie jamboree took place in Long Island
cemetery. Zombies from all parts of the island.
(Where?) Some of them are great calypsonians.
(Some.) Since the season was carnival they got
together in bacchanal. Oh, what ya' doin'?

(Chorus)

One female zombie wouldn't behave. She say she
want me for a slave. In the one hand she's holding
a quart of wine, in the other she's pointing that
she'll be mine. Well, believe me folks, I had to
run. (Why?) A husband of a zombie ain't no fun!
(Don't knock it!) I says, "Oh, no, my turtle
dove, that old bag of bones I cannot love."
Oh, what you doin'?

(Chorus)

Right then and there she raise her feet. "I'm
a-going to catch you now, my sweet. I'm gonna make
you call me 'Sweetie Pie'." I says "Oh,
no, get back, you lie!" "I may be lyin'
but you will see (What?) After you kiss this dead
zombie." (Blah!) Well, I never seen such a
horror in my life. Can you imagine me with a
zombie wife? (Yes!)

(Chorus)

Big RiB

I knew a girl called Mary Skinner,
Many's the time I've had it in her,
I've had it standing, I've had it lying,
If I'd got wings, I'd have had it flying,
Now she's dead but not forgotten,

Anti-necrophilia?

Marvell's 'To His Coy Mistress"

"The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace."

Not to mention the verses from "Darling Clementine":

5. In a churchyard, near the canyon,
Where the myrtle doth entwine,
There grow roses, and other posies,
Fertilized by Clementine.

---

7. In my dreams she still doth haunt me,
Robed in garments soaked in brine.
Though in life I used to hug her,
Now she's dead, I'll draw the line.

The ultimate song on necrophilia has to be The Unquiet Grave - and the most beautiful.

Cold blows the wind over my true love
And gentle drops the rain,
I never had but one true love
And in greenwood he lies slain.

I'd do as much for my true love
As any young girl may.
I'll sit and weep all on his grave
For twelve months and a day.

And when twelve months and a day were gone,
Her true love, he did speak.
Who sits and weeps at my graveside
And will not let me speak.

Can't remember any more without digging out a text.

Here's old folkie Alice Cooper's "I Love the Dead" :

I love the dead before they're cold,
Their blueing flesh for me to hold.
Cadaver eyes upon me see nothing.
I love the dead before they rise,
No farewells, no goodbyes.
I never even knew your now-rotting face.
While friends and lovers mourn your silly grave.
I have other uses for you, Darling.

I love the dead,
I love the dead,
I love the dead so.
I love the dead,
I love the dead,
I love the dead.
I love the dead,
I love the dead,
I love the dead.
I love the dead,
I love the dead,
I love the dead.
I love the dead,
I love the dead,
I love the dead.

I, I love the dead,
I, I love the dead,
I, I love the dead.

I love the dead before they're cold,
Their blueing flesh for me to hold.
Cadaver eyes upon me see nothing.

I am thinking that this must most certainly be a sad symptom of what I like to call Touchy-Feely-oma!

The disease is a direct result of singing treacly folk songs incessantly---things like Dancing With Bears, Amazing Grease, and quite a few---er, no -- just about all --- religious songs. There is no better way to explain the term "The quick and the dead." It's those fast women. Anbd thank god for them...

Oh, the humanity.

Jiggers, I've heard a very short version of this on Cliffe Bonfire coaches. It's a parody of Rolf Harris's appalling song 'Jeg the Peg'.

It goes:

'My name is JACK (diddle iddle iddle um)
I'm a necrophiliAC (diddle iddle iddle um)
Wherever I go
Through rain and snow
I dig one up
And have a go
My name is JACK (diddle iddle iddle um)'

Isn't there a really rhyme that goes something like :

My name is Jack, tidilly-ack, tidilly-ack
I'm a necrophilliac, tidilly-ack, tidilly-ack
I get frustrated, tiddilly-ated, tiddilly-ated,
When I see them get cremated

It makes me chunder, tidilly-under,tidilly-under,
When I seem then 6 feet under, tidilly-under,tidilly-under,

Last week my ....? Jack, tidilly-ack, tidilly-ack
....?
It made me .... ?
When I heard his pelvis crack, tidilly-ack, tidilly-ack

I lived with two girls at Uni in Newcastle and they learnt this on their walking trips to the Cairngorms. I've never been able to find all they lyrics - the above are the only bits I can remember from their singing. When they sang it one would look guilty and the other would sing it with mischievous lust.

Frank Proffitt, speaking of his ballad 'Song of a Lost Hunter' - a version of 'Young Hunting' - detailed a family tale that went with the ballad: "As gruesome as it may sound, she (the 'evil woman') took Heneree to her bed to make love after stabbing him."

This isn't mentioned in the actual ballad lyric, nor in any other version, but the idea that such a tale should be handed down along with the ballad is interesting to anyone who wants to consider what the songs meant to the traditional singers who sang them.

Lady Margaret: '...three times he kissed her cold corpsey lips, fell in her arms asleep...'
I think Malcolm Douglas's definition can be expanded to include attraction (sexual or otherwise) to all things associated with death. I suppose songs about burial grounds, undertakers etc regret rather than take delight in death. I used to have an EP 'George Melly Sings Doom' and seem to remember there was a song; 'I'm going down to the cemetery'

There will certainly be modern songs, but none, I think, from English-language tradition. Necrophilia is a well-defined term (it doesn't mean merely having sex with somebody who just happens to be dead, but being sexually attracted -whether in theory or practice- to the dead because they are dead), and in the occasional ballad in which somebody has, or may be assumed to have, sexual relations with a revenant, they are never aware at the time that their lover isn't technically alive; so those don't count.

If the person who asked you was misusing the word simply to mean 'sexual relations with somebody who later turns out to have been dead', then there's 'Sweet William's Ghost' and its Irish broadside derivative 'Willy O', arguably. The motif occasionally turns up in forms of 'The Grey Cock', but in those cases it has invariably been imported from another song; 'The Grey Cock' isn't natively a supernatural ballad at all, but an ordinary night-visiting song.

White ones, black ones,
Yellow ones, and red ones...
Necrophiliacs lookin' for dead ones.

I don't know any folk songs, but there's a Tom Petty song called Last Dance With Mary Jane.

What about in Scarborough Fair Town, where she finds her love washed up on the shore and only knows him "by the marks on his right hand"? He can't be looking too great. But she snogs him, and cuddles up to him, and dies in his arms.

Yuk.

I was asked last week if I knew any songs about necrophilia - I was miffed to admit I don't. Not in the real sense, anyway. The necrophiliac is the one with the desire/interest for erotic contact with corpses.

There are many vaguely touching on it but 'kissed her clay cold lips' is just to say goodbye and revenants don't seem to reveal they are dead until much later...that is, the live person hasn't actively sought out the sex (if any), they got caught up this once.

Know any real and traditional ballads of necrophilia?
