Now THIS is a film about music. In this award winning documentary, the filmaker takes us to the streets of New Orleans, New York, and Los Angeles...literally. The film examines some of the street musicians in each city. While I consider myself a musician, there are a million distractions and a heap of life's trappings that keep me from experiencing music to the level that these players do. All the music in the film was recorded live in the street. As they travel to different locations, the film makers record some percussion, then in another place a guitar over it, then more intruments until the whole sone is finishied. The film in inspirational, emotional, and most of all, very real.

More info here

Btw, the film is available through Amazon (about $10)...don't forget to go into amazon through mudcat.

Anyone watching Bill Moyers' Journal tonight was no doubt blown away by the interview and clips from Playing for Change: Peace Through Music. Street musicians all around the world contributed to this film by Mark Johnson, who is interviewed by Moyers.

Bill Moyers PBS page.

There is also a New York Times review of the film. link

Few musicians play with more passion and conviction than the soulful folks who take to the sidewalks to share their music. In this release, filmmakers Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls explore both the motivation and the music of the contemporary street busker by showing just the lengths to which these entertainers will go to share their music with the public. By showcasing both the lives and music of musicians in New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, Johnson and Walls offer a series of soulful moments that may have otherwise gotten lost in the infinite noise of the outside world. In affording viewers a taste of the outsider music that may likely never reach beyond a two-block radius, the filmmakers in essence capture the true spirit of the music that is so crucial to the lives of the performers. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I didn't hear when the film was produced, though Johnson said it took 10 years. The Times lists it as 2003, but I find a movie time in Fort Worth at one theater where it is showing.

You can watch it online. I think they already have a link up. It'll bring tears to your eyes. Joyful, but tears.

Ah, jeez. We didn't miss it. Just finished watching it and I have tears streaming down my face. How beautiful and joyful, yes! Thanks so much for this thread. If I can afford, I know what I shall be giving for Christmas presents this year.

I think so! This will be a frugal year, with a few gifts that have real meaning. I had the same thought--this would be a good gift.

Wouldn't it be great if Mudcat could build one of those schools?

Makes me want to cry. But we could do it.

It would be really neat, Maggie.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any DVDs of this. Their website says they will have stuff in their store by early 2009, so may not be able to do it for the holiday season presents. Darn it!

It is in a Spanish language theater here in Fort Worth, with subtitles. I'll check it out this weekend.

Where did you find a listing of places where it will be shown? I didn't see anything on the website about that. Tks!

I was searching and I spotted it showing at a Spanish language theater here in town, with sub-titles, I think.

I had the film in my NetFlix lineup, but it is no longer available. I wonder if the PBS documentary is the same one discussed on Moyer?

If people follow any of the links posted in here they'll be hooked by this production, it's just so compelling. Since it is being released soon I've added it back to my NetFlix queue.

We've seen a couple of threads here for the international version of "Stand By Me", which has fast become a global phenomenon.

There are now several episodes, as good as, and in the same fashion, of "Stand By Me". We can now add Bob Marley's "One Love", "Don't Worry", "Izulu", and Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me".

All these share the power of voice, spirit, internationalism and peace.
See Them All Here

Never has 'World Music' had a truer description.

I checked on this one yesterday on NetFlix. It doesn't show a release date, but I know it'll be out soon, if not now. It is so engaging!

My apologies for starting the same thread, I should have looked harder first, but my enthusiasm took over.
As amends, here is the link for the site

There are a load of different songs, equally inspiring.

This site does run slowly - be warned.
