Subject: Obit: Peter Hamilton/Wattle Records Oct 2008 From: Rowan Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:09 PM From the Ausfolk list Pioneer record and film producer PETER HAMILTON died peacefully at home on October 23rd. Founder of the Wattle Record label and Wattle Films, Peter started the company in the 1950s at Paddington, Sydney, with his associate Edgar Waters. The label released the first commercially available bush songs including landmark recordings by The Bushwhackers Band[*], including their surprise hit 'The Drover's Dream'. Wattle also released Australian albums of A.L.Lloyd, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. One of the label's most significant releases offered traditional singers and musicians recorded by John Meredith. his is the inside story of the legendary Wattle record music label. Wattle was unique in many respects. It was the first Australian record label to have a major hit record on the Australian record charts; the first to make dramatised and animated films of bush ballads; the first to commercially release recordings of didgeridoo playing and Aboriginal traditional songs; the first to invent and use a portable recording desk and a synchronised film and audio tape machine and the first to have Australian bush music played on television - on ABCTV You can listen to The Wattle Story at http://www.musicaustralia.org/apps/MA?function=showDetail¤tBibRecord=000026137261&itemSeq=&total=&returnFunction=getACopy&&sessionId= Peter's partner Denise Nagorcka has advised that the funeral will be held on Saturday 1 November at Bodhi Farm, The Channon near Lismore. Bodhi Farm is the community he lived on that meant so much to him. All are welcome to attend his funeral. To say Peter and Wattle had an influence on me starting Larrikin Records (also at Paddington) would be an understatement. RIP Peter Hamilton Warren Fahey Australian Folklore Unit [*] Not to be confused with The Bushwackers who toured widely in the late 70s. Rowan |
