Subject: Lyr Add: I'M IN LOVE WITH SARAH PALIN (Joe Rodgers
From: McGrath of Harlow
Date: 28 Oct 08 - 09:34 PM

This song's rather fun (written by Joe Rodgers, performed by Joe and the Plumbers. Chris Geist - tuba, John Solek - drums, Mike Townsend - banjo, plunger and Joe Rodgers - vocal, accordion and trumpet) - I'M IN LOVE WITH SARAH PALIN - and not even malicious. I think people on both sides might like it, and that's not too usual, I suspect, at this time.

I'll put the words here, lifted from YouTube, for greater convenience:

I'M IN LOVE WITH SARAH PALIN
(Joe Rodgers)

I'm in love with Sarah Palin, and I love to watch her on TV.
When I see her winking, it gets me to thinking that she's coming on to me.
So I'm in love with Sarah Palin, and I really think that she is meant for me.
But it sure is a bummer when she flirts with Joe the Plumber and Joe Six-Pack instead of just with me.

I'm in love with Sarah Palin, and I'm hopin' soon she'll pal around with me.
I can't wait to ask her, I'll move up to Alasker, be a hockey dad and raise her family.
Yes, I'm in love with Sarah Palin, and when we're one how happy we will be:
We'll see Russia from our door—who could ask for more?—and go swimming in the Arctic Sea.

I'm in love with Sarah Palin—and I get the feeling she could go for me.
I know that she's hitched, but I hope that soon she'll switch and leave that doggoned first dude for me.
Yes, I'm in love with Sarah Palin: I hope that she becomes VP—
And then if John McCain collapses from the strain the first couple will be Sarah and me.

Not bad but it could use a little polishing and a few alternative verses.

It does seem to strike the right balance in terms of humor rather than being mean-spirited.

I think this might be the same Joe Rodgers, twenty years ago, singing in Polish - Joe Rodgers sings Our Break Up. (And here's an interesting piece by him about the ethnic basis of polkas.)

If he's not a Mudcatter, he ought to be.

I wonder who's responsible for set decoration on this production? Pretty freakin' briulliant...

At first, I wondered about the laundry-room setting, but I now realize that it makes perfect sense for "Joe and the Plumbers." The sheetrock-mud bucket at stage left is a nice touch.

Bad link there - here is the right one for Joe Rodgers sings Our Break Up

And I found a bit on a polka related forum somewhere from Joe Rodgers saying that the band they out together to make the Sarah Palin song included both Democrats and Republicans. (But I lost it and couldn't find it again.)

Anyway I think that's a good example for some overheated partisans, even on the Mudcat. And a good sign for the future, perhaps.

Hi, guys: Enjoyed seeing your site and intereting comments on our Palin video ---I'm glad you appreciate our effort at bipartisanship ( in a seriously divided USA) , and just wanted to report that the polka related forum you quoted but then lost McG of H, is alt.music.polkas , the main discussion and news site for polka music in the U.S. to my knowledge ( of course people from anywhere in the world can participate , too, and some posters are from Europa and Australia. ---I'm interested in your site, too, which is , if I understand correctly, devtoed to folk and/or (?) alternative music --- A lot of your members and posters seem to be in the UK, but I notice the record shop is in NJ, USA so I hope I understand correctly that yours is an international organization and site. I''ll keep looking in and advise my friends to do so, too--we are are , to varying degrees , interested in folk music in general ,altho polka music is the "main gig" for most of us. Best to all, in the UK,USA or wherever you can be , from Joe R , Mike T, John S and Chris G ( aka Joe and the Plumbers )

PS: I forgot to mention that the site you mentioned, or else another you might enjoy , is the Nostradamus Polka page (nostradamus.net), which features reviews of polka recordings from around the world, as well as essays and discussions on polka music and its place in the world by me and many others active in this music. I think that Nostradamus' page is the most culturally-oriented,informative (and hence overall the best) polka site in existence. ---And yes, McGrath of H, that other youtube clip you found was me 20 years ago ---by comparing it with the Palin one we did last week you can see what the ravages of time can do to a person ( ^-^ ) ---Oh, yes, and by using the same youtube title, "Happy Harmony Boys," our band's name back then, you can also see our cross-over hit "Maurice, Don't Do That", which was popular in the the polka and Cajun fields and won us a U.S. Polka Association no. 1 song of the year award and a Grammy nomination in the polka field ( Yes, these things do exist ).My friend and partner at the time, Charlie H, sang that "biggie" while I played the concertina and did a little "BS"ing at the end -:)Thanks again for taking interest in our alt/music world. Best, Joe R

That's great - I hoped Joe Rodgers would turn up here. As said above "If he's not a Mudcatter, he ought to be."

True, Joe, there's a lot of input here from the UK, but the Mudcat is very much based in the USA, and runs on US time. (Here in England it is 11.30 at night, and the Mudcat says it's about 7pm.)

Now I'm going to have another listen to that Sarah Palin song. In another thread I speculated whether among the hundred of songs thrown u in this campaign there might be any with staying power comparable perhaps to We've got Franklin D. Roosevelt back again. This just might be it.

Best to everybody out there in "Mudcat land" from yours truly and the Plumbers (haha) and all our friends in the polka world ( since polkas, as I'm happy you seem to recognize ---some don't--- are also folk music ---and tho happy polkas are the very antithesis of the blues, we love the blues, too----play "The House of the Rising Sun" (altho we always argue over which key to do it in, right , Mike?) and "Don't Need No Doctor",etc. at most gigs -:)

Hi, Joe -
I really enjoyed your song. I grew up in Milwaukee and now I live with my Polish wife and her Polish mother, so polka is part of my life. They say that in Milwaukee, even the punk bands do polkas (so they can perform at weddings). I've never been to a punk polka wedding, so I can't verify that first hand. The Milwaukee weddings I've been to have more of a bowling theme....
I think Sarah Palin would be right at home with a bowling theme.

Anyhow, nice to see you here.

Interesting lot the Finns... After all, remember their Eurovision winner in 2006, Hard Rock Hallelujah Which of course definitely wasn't a polka.

Sorry - I'm drifting the thread somewhat...

Hi, McG: This Finnish music is "virtually" a polka ; that is, it has all the elements of the old , traditional music which eventually became known as polka music (2/4 rhythm---and polka steps are usually danced to this music ,even when its musicians and crowds often affect a "Gothic appearance") ---a good example of only slightly more modernized music which calls itself polka is the "Kebab polka" by the great "Polkaholix" of Berlin, Germany (the clip is shown in the margin together with other similar clips when you bring up your Finnish clip on youtube). Many polkas from Northern Europa (i.e. Finland ) and Eastern Europe are in minor key ---altho this group identifies itself as rock/ska ,etc. etc in the tags/description of the clip, I think you may agree that what you are seeing and hearing is actually more polka-like ---some avoid the term polka just because it doesn't sound mod enough for their tastes , I think --- making our genre, for some, even many such groups in these regions, "the music that dare not speak its name" (haha) ---on the other hand, others you see right in that very margin, like the German Polkaholix, come out and say it proudly, while yet others you see there sort of compromise, or have their cake and polka , too (!? ---sorry for the weird mixed metaphor), by adopting names for their genre like "punk polka" ( or in this country "extreme push" ---extreme is supposed to connote cutting edge/over the top and "push" is a "code word" in polka circles in this country for polka---so that insiders recognize and accept it while its "polka-ness" is being hidden from outsiders in the hope of gaining mainstream acceptance that a polka labelled as such wouldn't gain --- tricky, huh?---Anyway, to me a rose is still a rose, a duck a duck ( if it quacks like a duck, etc.) and a polka a polka ---That's why I called our song "I'm in Love with Sarah Palin POLKA"---even at the risk of losing some support from people who might consider polkas too blue-collar, folksy,or whatever for their taste.---playing to the "base" (haha) ---just like our folksy princess , Sarah ---After all, we are , I proudly affirm (drum roll here, please ^^) Joe and the Plumbers....

Don't apologize for wierd mixed metaphors, Joe, here they earn you double bonus points.

It's funny, reading this thread and listening to the tune, I'm having musical flashbacks to the times I spent visiting family in Northeast PA; seems like there was always polka music around, and I really haven't heard it again until today (WAIT! Isn't there a cable channel that plays all-polka, all-the-time, and only in faraway hotel rooms?! Another misty memory....)

Anyway, this thread is great; weaving old and new, slipping a polka-micky to the crowd.

One of my new favorite singers-and-songwriters is Jolie Holland, and she's been doing some weirdly wonderful versions of very old folk songs on her albums, which tickles me that way also.

Carry on!

Dani

There seems to be an odd embarrassment about polkas in America for some reason - "the music that dare not speak its name".

I don't think this applies elsewhere, or at least, not any more than for folk music in general in some places - polkas are just seen as one variety of folk music.

The enormous variation from country to country is intriguing - here are three more Irish polkas "Knocking About" "The Brosna" and Where's The Cat?" Seamus Creagh & Matt Cranitch. (Found in this discussion on The Sessions
.............

To get back to Sarah Palin - here is a clip of a polka band in Alaska

Polkas? We start with a polka and end with a polka at most ceilidhs, and will be tomorrow night here in Stroud UK. Though because the polka is not a called dance (think hoedown, contra and squares and a few particularly English things as well) it tends to be the cognicentii and keen beginners that dance the polka.

Date: 06 Nov 08 - 07:53 PM

No love in this one:

This Ain't No Beauty Contest
© 2008 George Mann (10/2, 10/12)

At the heart, we're all reasonable people
And as reasonable people, I think we can all agree
That we want a president and a vice president
Who can name at least one newspaper
That they get their news from on a regular basis

This ain't no beauty contest
If it was you'd win hands down
For while Obama's kinda sexy
The other guys both look like circus clowns

But when things start getting crazy
You can't just twirl your gold baton
Or strut around in some hot bathing suit
Until the bad guys are all mesmerized or gone

So goodbye Sarah Palin
You're not ready for this stage
You're not ready for the big leagues
You're not ready for this age

You know I just don't understand why she couldn't have said
"Lawrence vs. Texas" from 2003
When the Supreme Court struck down
Texas law banning sexual contact
Between certain kinds of consenting adults

Or National Labor Relations Board vs. Jones & Laughlin Steel, 1937,
Which upheld the rights of workers to form labor unions

Or why she didn't, in the clutch, just shout out
"Brown vs. Board of Education!" from 1954
Which said that segregated classrooms were inherently unequal

After all, she was asked which Supreme Court cases she disagreed with...

You can lecture us on morals
But take a look at your own house
A druggie son, a pregnant daughter
And that's just what's gotten out

They say you cheated on your husband
Tried to fire your sister's ex
So just what have you to offer us?
I guess it all boils down to sex

So goodbye Sarah Palin
You're not ready for this stage
You're not ready for the big leagues
You're not ready for this age

Goodbye Sarah Palin
It is time for you to go
Because this ain't no beauty contest
And this country's voting "no"

No, this ain't no beauty contest
And this country's voting "no"

Hi, guys: Nice talking with you again: I've enjoyed the two "Sarah, Farewell" songs and am thrilled with the outcome of the
elections, even though ( we must all make some sacrifices -:) ) the fact that " Sarah, the Plumber and John McCain are now all going down the drain " (Sound like material for a new song?) will probably
cut down on our youtube popularity...
It turns out that the subject of "political polkas" is quite an interesting one and our recent effort is hardly the only one of its kind. Thus this whole chainof events led me to just post an essay on the subkect (entitled, appropriately enough, "Political Polkas",haha) on the main polka music news and views site ( alt.music.polkas---It offers a brief overview of this sub-genre , beginningwith the WW II era favorite, "The Fuehrer's Face," sung by Spike Jones and Donald Duck, and continuing right up to the present and the two recent Sarah Palin polkas. An interesting fact about this genre, indicated by my research, is that Ms. Palin , as the subject of two (2) two such polkas, is, as a subject of these political songs, equalled only by A. Hitler (!?!?! )---That's a scoop--not even on the other site: You heard it first here (LOL) ___There is much more for enjoyment, consideration and debate on the alt.polkas site--Please feel free to visit and/or contribute to the discussion there ---or , if that is techncially feasible, simply to reproduce my essay on that site here --- Registration on that site is completely free and easy , as is yours, and in both cases, everything written there is free of charge and for the promotion of "folksy" music. ---In addition, any contributions by members here to that discussion would of course enrich the discussions and bring a bit of always welcome fresh air and diversity to our "polka world."   Thansk again for your interest and nice comments---and the "Palin Farewell" songs. We'll miss her, of course, for the time being, but what can you do? Life ---and politics---take their course...Best always, Joe Rodgers

I've enjoyed both, too. Thanks, oldhippie, for adding yours. My sentiments exactly!

I think polkas became kind of looked down on in the US because they were too "square" esp. since they were featured on the Lawrence Welk Show which ran through the 60s when we were all becoming so "hip" to the counterculture and its music.:-)

Great stuff Joe. And here it is

And here are the words (because I bet the Mudcat's going to be around longer than YouTube!):

I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH SARAH PALIN
WRITTEN BY JOE RODGERS
PERFORMED BY JOE AND THE PLUMBERS

I'm still in love with Sarah Palin ---She's still the only one for me.
It really is a shame about McCain's campaign ---but Sarah's not to blame so let her be!
I'm still in love with Sarah Palin --- and she can always count on me:
I know Sarah's comin' back --- she's on the winning track
And I'll be going with her to DC !

I'm still in love with Sarah Palin---She's the governor I want to govern me!
Anyone who puts her down is just a jealous clown
Sarah says they're jerks and that sure works for me !
I'm still in love with Sarah Palin: She's the darling of the GOP.
So I'll take this chance to say that I'm with her all the way
And I sure hope that she'll be true to me.

I'm still in love with Sarah Palin --and by now I hope that she's turned on to me.
I hope she's in the mood to make me her first dude
'Cause she's the perfect candidate for me!
I'm still in love with Sarah Palin
And I know that she'll bring me security:
If that Russian rears his head, she'll make him wish that he was dead
And we'll chase him back across the Arctic Sea
And by next election time she'll be back and she'll be mine
And together we'll go down in history !

Again, hope you all enjoy it and of course we'll be interested in any possible reactions, suggestions, or commentary.
Best always, Joe Rodgers ("Joe and the Plumbers")

Just Dee-Lightful.    Just the right attitude--though here's hoping she remains just a great subject for a polka and eventually becomes a trivia question.

But was there really a "I'm In Love..." outtake other than those few seconds at the end?   A full-length outtake would be just the ticket.

Hi, folks--Hope you've all been well-- Your administrator's words ( in adding our songs' lyrics at the time : "Because Mudcat's probably going to be around longer than youtube " ) were prophetic --because this popular vid, which I'll always be glad that so many of you liked, was erased for unclear reasons by a disgruntled "administrator" about a year ago, and thus every trace of it disappeared internet-wide ( When one you tube vid goes, every reproduction of it goes): You Tube is great in many ways, but the down side , we learned, is that, unlike traditional recordings, a youtube vid can be be arbitrarily removed by one person ( in our case, the volunteer "administrator") in a scary way that reminds me of how totalitarian societies worldwide make all evidence of free speech, political parody and songs they might not like ( and our little numbers had some of all of this) disappear.
Fortunately, our band mate ("Tuba") Chris, as it turns out, had a pre-you tube copy of the vid on his hard drive--and so, a year later, he was able to bring it back---because , after all, a good song ( or political parody, etc.) shouldn't just disappear forever, which otherwise would have been the case---EXCEPT for the texts of the song and its sequel, which , thanks to your administrator's foresight , are still here for all to see---As a further testimony to your site's wonderful role in perpetuating songwriting efforts and reactions to them , we are grateful that, as a result of the permanent deletion of the original "Sarah" videos, all of the many nice comments on them disappeared permanently , too---and thus, the only major site with lengthy discussions of the number today is, again, Mudcat( ^^) ---so my friends and I are doubly grateful to you for keeping the record of songs like ours ( and so many others, I'm sure) alive, which no other source ( even you tube ) could do.
Thanks again, and all the best---and , by all means, come back and visit us and Sarah some time again, if you're of a mind--We'll be glad to see you -:) ---The exact title of the new vid on y-tube is "I'm in Love with Sarah Palin" Joe + the Plumbers    Sincerely, Joe Rodgers and band friends ( aka "Joe and the Plumbers"),Ct.,USA

Hi, folks —As an update to our Palin song/video discussed above —12 years and a couple of US elections later, I happened to get involved in a new creative video —“folk-punk” style, something new to me —now in the age of Trump, that also reflects major social and political issues of our times, but more in the language of today—and which deals more with the issues of -“Trumpamerica,” which you could say have really come to the boiling point now. I’m now living in Hawaii, where I—a former polka band leader in Connecticut for many years, where we created the Palin polka , which got some national attention during the Obama-McCaine election—have started jamming with local friend and talented songwriter, Josh Cleveland, who plays folk punk style ( which favors the accordion, together with guitar/banjo)— and, most recently,he wrote a number we put on Facebook, where it has gotten some favorable attention, called “Eat the Rich “ ( A popular populist cliche these days, it turns out), which also takes on Pres. Trump, Senate leader Mitch McConnell, and our whole social/ economical system today. I think/ho-e some of you guys may be interested in this —for me, anyway—popular/populist new genre of music—If so, you can check it out on my Facebook page (Joseph Rodgers, instructor at ICC, Honolulu, Josh Cleveland, the singer/author’s FB page —He’s the Josh C in Hawaii or on various other Facebook group pages , such as most punk or folk punk music pages , or as EAT THE RICH by Easy Targets, our little folk punk duo’s name . I’d be interested, too, in whether you think that this approach —or language, which is common is the rising “punk” field these days, and among younger people in general, and/or the themes and arguments it makes , are —or not a natural evolution of the the folk/protest music of the 1960’s , which has “stuck with” and inspired me and many of my generation over the years —that maybe just naturally take on a different form since, as the great Bob Dylan put it, “the times they are a changin’”— Best wishes always —Your occasional musical guest and friend, Joe (“the Plumber”) Rodgers , now in Honolulu, Hi.
