I enjoyed listening to this album. I cherry picked the tracks I liked off emusic (I have a subscription with them and they're pretty good for folk and blues stuff).

There's a lot of inessential music on it. Third-rate bluegrass, basically. But that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable to listen to, and it does hammer home just how strange a phenomenon skiffle was. The very fact that the UK's musicians were collectively seized with the desire to play bluegrass and hillbilly and gospel tunes is pretty weird, when you think about it.

Yeah, the Lea Valley Skiffle Group were among the highlights for me – they have a really hangdog mopeyness to the vocals, and their Brit accents peak through. Very charming. and the City Ramblers Skiffle Group and the Ken Colyer stuff sounds great.

Another thing that stood out for me too are the Beryl Bryden tracks. One of them is extraordinary – sounds like Wanda Jackson being produced by Joe Meek or something. It's got one of those kitsch 1950s sci-fi reverbs on it. The Nancy Whiskey track is good too, making me curious to find out more about her – which I then did, thanks to wikipedia.

Did 'Alan Lomax and the Ramblers' include Ewan MacColl as well as a bass and a clarinette player?

Among the CDs I got for my birthday (65, no I don't look it do I?)was a boxed set "Pig Iron, washboards, freight trains and kazoos: the UK skiffle boom 1954-57", Acrobat ACQCD7009.
   I had the Donegan,Colyer,Vipers, Duncan etc. tracks elsewhere but there were a few more obscure bands (Delta Skiffle group, Eden St Skiffle group, Lea Valley Skiffle group, Brian Newey Skiffle Group & Westcott Skiffle Group)I didn't have (and the booklet was quite interesting, too). Alan Lomax and the Ramblers and the Alexis Korner groups aren't on most of the other compilations I've got. The big surprise was tracks by Peggy Seeger and Guy Carawan, with Isla Cameron: Bring a Little Water, Sylvie;Freight Train;Cumberland Gap; Sail Away Lady. The sleeve writer (Roger Dopson) describes her recordings as an attempt to present the "correct" way to sing those popular skiffle songs!
