I don't really trust Barr either - I think he may be an ultraconservative in disguise as a Libertarian - but he's not about to win in any case, and every Libertarian vote tells the Republicans that they need votes from more people than the rich, the warhawks, and the protestant fundamentalists, to stay competitive. The Democrats are, IMO, living in a dream world. They think they can repeal the law of supply and demand by legislation, and create the perfect society by eliminating private enterprise and having everyone work for the government. In 1993, an interim constitution was passed, which dismantled apartheid and provided for a multiracial democracy with majority rule. The peaceful transition of South Africa from one of the world's most repressive societies into a democracy is one of the 20th century's most remarkable success stories. Mandela and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. The 1994 election, the country's first multiracial one, resulted in a massive victory for Mandela and his ANC. The new government included six ministers from the National Party and three from the Inkatha Freedom Party. A new national constitution was approved and adopted in May 1996. In 1997 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, chaired by Desmond Tutu, began hearings regarding human rights violations between 1960 and 1993. The commission promised amnesty to those who confessed their crimes under the apartheid system. In 1998, F. W. de Klerk, P.W. Botha, and leaders of the ANC appeared before the commission, and the nation continued to grapple with its enlightened but often painful and divisive process of national recovery. Nelson Mandela, whose term as president cemented his reputation as one of the world's most farsighted and magnanimous statesmen, retired in 1999. Now, there are only two sounds in the Om, those being the vowel sound "o" and the consonant sound "m". Just by coincidence, those happen to be the first letters in the last names of the two major party presidential candidates. Continue chanting "Om" until you begin to feel an afinity for either the "o" or the "m". If you feel the "o" speaks more clearly to you, vote for Obama. If you feel the "m" speaks more clearly to you, vote for Cynthia McKinney. |

They want to vote to keep any sort of Republican influence that is possible, but are torn by an overwhelming frustration with their choices. What they will actually do may not be clear until they face the ballot. There are also a few 'independents' who are just the dithering sort and kid themselves that they have any real idea what they actually think....these are not a huge sample, but may decide based on some intangible whim in the last hours. |
