I hate to think about what he might do. Be very worried.

Strange how when I paid visits to my US relatives how many of the various people I was introduced had native American ancestors, and now Obama. The mark of Genghis Khan is said to be on the vast majority of eastern Europeans, the native Americans gave oul Genghis a run for the money.

Congratulations to Obama and all those Americans, who wanted their country to be something more than a boastful, swaggering clique of greedy oil barons. You now have an educated and pragmatic man as your top executive. There is a lot to do, but the US now can regain its standing abroad and start to build a state for its citizens rather than just its masters.

Congratulations to
the entire body and mind of humanity:
First to the loyal opposition who do what they do and in turn helped to move liberty along.
To the thoughtful minds with their investigations and thoughtful arguments.
To the heart of those who express honest emotion and open up despite the staid rules of not discussing religion and politics.
To the sacastic cynical comics who can expose the taboo and reveal unspoken truths.
To the calm and collected vision of those with far reaching perspective.
To the artists whose most powerful art is derived from the necessity of the age we live in.
To the legs and lungs of those who knocked on doors and spoke to perfect strangers.
To the voices who sing above the crowd until a unity of voices find a common chord.

Congratulations to all.

Don H.

Not least, hope that democracy works and that we can see a new spirit of cooperation, not the partisan division we have seen. Yes, I am an idealist, if a cynical one.

When FDR entered the White House he had no clue what to do about the depression. What he did have, was the smarts to call in a gang of people who DID know what to do.
The republicans fought him tooth and nail but he won out in the end.

Of all the speeches he gave, there is one statement that, in my opinion, put him on the road to the White House. I quote, "The republicans tell us that this problem will solve itself in the long run. People don't EAT in the long run."

"Obama's part Cherokee on his mother's side, apparently."

I thought that all Americans claim to be part Cherokee (?) They are hardly ever part Creek or Mohawk or Ojibwa or Mescalero Apache - funny that!

Part Indian, part Black, part White. America has Jimi Hendrix as president. That should make for some interesting renditions of Star Spangled Banner.

Does this mean that there is now a realistic chance of a descendant of Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse becoming President ? It would be even more satisfying and appropriate than today's historic event, don't you think ??

A humourous cartoon in The Telegraph yesterday - the day after the US election all the US news networks turn their attention to the Glenrothes by-election. Somehow I think not!! I have to say that I'm glad it's all over after wall-to-wall coverage on UK news channels but I do think the right man won - so well done America! It's certainly going to be an interesting first 100 days....

Looking for a book repository?

He'll have to work hard to be half as bad as Bush.

If you read Obama's "winning" speech (Quoted in full on the other thread ), you will realise that he himself doesn't expect it to be easy. What he does seem to offer is a more enlightened approach than the hide bound self-seekers who have been in charge of the shop for too long.
I wish him well, and I sincerely hope that he is allowed to make the changes which are so desperately needed by all of us, wherever we are.
Quack!

Well done, you Americans! Perhaps not quite as evil as some thought, then 8-) Yes, like Lizzie, I was up-and-down last night, early to bed (10), up 2:30 - 3:00 for a first catch-up, then again 5:00 - 5:30. And I still got up at 6:30 to go to work, having pocketed 7 hours sleep.

Penguin Egg, nobody can really answer the questions you - rightly - pose. Probably not even Obama himself, at least not with 100% certainty. I think the way to see it is that last night people voted in the potential for change. How much of it, and in precisely what direction, will depend not only on the leader, but those around him, and more importantly, on the willingness of others to follow, especially if he points towards some rougher tracks...

Although I don't mean to rain on people's parade and I am happy that a black family now occupies the White House, what is he going to do with his presidency? What do people expect of him? How will America be a different place when he leaves office? And another thing: He is not black. He is half black. He is also half white. Just some thoughts. However, this is, I think, on the whole, a good thing. This may put over 200 years of injustice in the past.

I'm happy to report to the rest of the world that in the city in which I live (Seattle), when Obama's victory was announced on television, there was dancing in the streets.

I mean, literally!

Thousands of people poured out of pubs, clubs, restaurants, offices, condos, and apartments in the downtown area, gathered around First Avenue and Pike Street, the location of the Pike Place Market, and danced, waving Obama placards, and chanting Obama's "Yes, we can! Yes, we can!" from his acceptance speech.

There were African-Americans and Asians in the crowd, but most were white. It pretty much reflected the percentages of Seattle's population. People were slapping each other on the back, shaking hands, hugging each other. Unity, expressed in a spontaneous outburst of sheer glee!

And it was peaceful (except for the running around, the shouting, shouting, the chanting, and the dancing). The police were there, but they just stood around and grinned.

I think we've passed some kind of milestone.

Don Firth

To all you non Americans, thank you for this thread & espically thank you for having enough faith in US, not as a government but as a nation of people, to have stood by our side, God knows it must've been hard. We all here know we've tried your very last nerves & you've put up with the very worst of US. We all thank you for baring with US through what's got to be our darkest hours in anyone's living memory.
Hopefully we will see fit to repay you all in kind, you've really earned far more than just our gratitude & respect, you have earned yourselves the right to call/demand of us if ever, God forbid, you fall on as dark a times as we have. Hopefully we can earn back the friendship you have shown us.

Thanks to you all, a new day is dawning

Congratulations to the United States of America for your new President.

It is a historic decision.
A lot of us in the UK will now be watching breakfast TV and there is very little else being covered.
There is a feeling of hope that this will bring a real change for the better.

I myself sincerely hope that he makes a good job of it.
