Cheers Laurence and co. It was a great night, just what I wanted. Woke up at about 8.00am on Sunday and took a slow drive back via service stations and one of my more local sessions, whom I had not seen since Summer so that went well as well. Did'nt have as much yummy ale though as I did on Saturday night. Plus the toll bridge was unmaned, so I got use it for nothing. Mind you I did pay for an all day ticket on the way here, and only used it once, so fair is fair. Hope to see some of you soon. Bedworth maybe? TTFN

With the beer at £1-90 a pint at Sale, and anything left fron Saturday at the Sarries, I don't think there much chance of drying out this week.

Well what a day yesterday (and the early hours of Sunday) was. It's always a great end to the day, and the souling season, to go out with a session of music and song.

I hope The Unicorn Man from Luton got home safely. Nice to have met you and nice to hear a different selection of songs. Thanks again for coming up here to join in - I hope it lived up to expectations.

And finally thanks to all those who came along and joined in on what was a dreadful night weatherwise. We look forward to seeing everyone again - and those that didn't quite make it this time - next year.

Count me in. I've been going to Essy's off and on since before it was Essy's - more on than off recently, since I introduced the rest of the Radish clan to it. And I always order tea last, so I don't know what the problem was with that.

Don't worry about it, Spleen - the main reason I took unilateral action in footing the bill was that the girl behind the counter seemed to be getting irritated with us not ordering in the correct way (I think we were supposed to order the drinks first "I already asked if you wanted tea!" she said in an exasperated tone when 2 cups of tea were requested after ordering everything else). I also don't think she was used to two grown men arguing over the last steak and kidney pie ("no you have it.." "no you have it..."). Add to this the loss of the order number ticket and the endless shouting of "89"...

Nevertheless, good food - big portions and small prices

A great place - I'll gladly go back to Essy's - but will they have us back?

Wish I could have made it to Lymm... prior engagements and all that.

The cafe in question was Essy's... steak and kidney pies at a fifth of the price of those in the more bijoux establishments just up the road. A very nice interlude to an otherwise dull working day.

Rapunzel - I owe you a fiver for the meal... sorry 'bout that.

After a day of merry shopping & sightseeing in Manchester we sort of fell into a decline whilst taking in the gadgetry of offer in Selfridges in the Trafford Centre - I knew things were getting bad when I almost bought a radio controlled free-flying polystyrene bird for £15, at that was at 6.30pm. Killing time? Time was killing us!

Next year we'll set off a bit later, though our lunch-date with Spleen in a glorious cafe in back of the cathedral someplace was straight out of a Saint Etienne song: everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for, joking around, still digging that sound...

Next year most assuredly...

Indeed John it is today already - just about got myself settled after last night's enjoyment and organised ready for today. Another day's enjoyment ahead and geting not too far of saturation point - in many respects!

Anyone coming to the Sarracen's head tonight will have the privelage of seeing the first outing of our new Enterer's staff - and I'll say it myself it looks magnificant.

Well I'll remind Mark (the Doctor) about the evening - his playing was enviously good considering we'd been on the go since 1.00pm. Not many dooos these days where one goes into a pub at 1.00pm, wanders out every so ofton to go and perform the play somewhere in the vicinity to finally come back at 9.30(ish) to perform the Play for the last time for the season, have a damn good music & singing session then go home 12 hours later at 1.00am!

It's a day (and session) crammed packed full of everthing dear to the heart of any self respecting traditionally inclined person.

Can't wait.

As one of the reprobates of the Warburton Soulers,(I must declare my interest!) I can only concur with John's analysis of this event....
From the little I recall of last year's do (the part barrel was not left by me)it was a fun-filled, poetry-packed, musically magnificent bash......
with the serious overtone of the maintenance of a very old Cheshire tradition,the Souling Play, which I consider in the same light as,and to be of the same importance as, the folk music tradition.

There will be a mega sing / music session at the Saracen's Head, Warburton (between Lymm & Partington, Cheshire) on the evening of Saturday 8th November 2008.

This is the traditional end of season bash of the Warburton Souling Play. This has always been something of good do to say the least - I'm sure this year will be no different!

There is some space for caravans / campervans in the pub car park.

The Play is aiming to get to the pub for around 9pm for the last performance, after which there will be music & singing until very late.

I was at the pub last night, they have been stocking up on ale for us - they only had a part-barrel left after last year's do.
