Hi 'Catters.

I've just returned from a 10-day trip to Ireland with a group of American tourists.

One of the highlights of the trip was having Dick Miles, our own Captain Birdseye, and his partner Cathy Cook join us for a lovely music session in the River Inn in Midleton, Co. Cork.

Dick is a master on the concertina, and Cathy can handle the fiddle and button box expertly.
As most of you know, Dick also has a powerful voice and extensive repertoire, while Cathy harmonizes beautifully, and between the 3 of us, the tour group got exposed to some fine reels, jigs and hornpipes, as well as plenty of great traditional songs.

It was a pleasure and a delight to have them play for my group, and I hope that we can do it again next time I'm in Ireland.

Thanks Dick and Cathy.

Seamus

thanks Seamus,we enjoyed it too.
there was a bizarre occurence on our way home.
we must have been half a mile from home,as we approached the main cross,in Ballydehob, sitting in the middle of the road were three young women, waving their hands and gesticulating, clearly stoned out of their heads,it was 2 am in the morning, and it was freezing cold, theres no accounting for masochism.
enjoying your book, Seamus.
Clean Cabbage in the Bucket, published by Llumina press, definitely a good read.

when I lived in Nottingham,I was returning home late one night 2 am,and I had to stop at some traffic lights, somewhere in Derbyshire,lo and behold there were a couple fornicating in an adjacent telephone booth.
I think the position is called The Derby Ram.

Dick, unfortunately we did not see any of that good stuff going on.
Just singing and drinking...

Are you sure that the three young women in the cross at Ballydehob

1. hadn't been mugged and left there by assailants unknown, or

2. weren't banshees, pookas or other preternatural beings?

Sounds like there could be song in it.

One more thing, Dick - what did you think of the sound of my new little Baby Taylor?

Is it a little boomer, or what?

Coupla sets of light gauge strings for your Fylde (great sounding guitar, BTW) on the way.

That recommendation is good enough for me. I trust Seamus' judgement (that statement is confined to matters of music...**chuckle**) implicitly. I look forward to hearing and seeing you perform down the way.

Was there a wee mound of dirt surrounding the lasses? Could have been caught in the aul fairy ring, and you passin' them by?

Yes, that book is absolutely priceless and a great read. I bought copies for the lads and lass in my band, and weekly they still come in quoting lines from it and laughing.

All the best,

Mick

Guest, doc.tom - absolutely!

I admire Dick Miles and his music, Cathy Cook and her music, Mick Lane and his music, and I enjoy playing with them when it's possible.

I like my new Baby Taylor, because it sounds great and fits in the overhead compartment of airplanes, like Dick's concertina and Cathy's fiddle and Mick's willie.

So yes, it is a public mutual admiration society.

If we jammed with you in a good session, I'm sure we'd admire you too.

As the Who nearly said "Inanity is fun".

As a travel guitar I think the Martin Backpacker is a killer - great great tone if not so loud. And truly tiny. Not a Taylor fan.

Surely the Fyldes deserve light-heavy's (12-56) or bigger to get the tops swinging.

Richard - you're spoiling the thread for Nuff Said. I'm afraid there's not enough inanity in your post.

Having played both the Backpacker and the Baby Taylor, I can safely say that the Taylor can hold its own in a session with voices, an accordion, a concertina, a fiddle and a banjo. No way the Backpacker could do that - at least mine couldn't.

As for the light-gauge strings, they're Dick's strings of choice for his Fylde, which is nice and loud too, so I'm sending him a couple of sets. They're cheaper here than they are at home.

Right, back to the inanity.

Ya' know.............Its not possible to post inane drivel that has any point to it because having any point at all takes it out of the inane drivel class, Now many might argue that simply stupid shit is inane drivel but if the said simply stupid shit has some sort of reason behind it then like, uh, ....***POOF***.....Up it goes in a cloud of verbage which cannot be defined.

You'd think that would make it Inane Drivel but so it goes with the definitions and practice of the inane fuckwits like myself. Its up to us to set the standards and assure mass quantities of inane drivel are just that...inane drivel. Mudcat is filled with inane drivel but none of it is on this thread. I love Seamus and all and gawd knows he's a funny cat but neither his posts here nor Birdyboys, Mick's kat's or Joe's for that matter, are in any way inane drivel. Likewise, though I hate to correct my friend, the posts of the broke-dick jadrool Guest Dumbfuck or whatever to hell he called himself are also not inane. Alas, they have purpose and that's sad. They're silly and petulant. juvenile and boring, and otherwise completely fucked.......but they aren't inane drivel.

Inane driveling takes years to master. Strict diligence to the rules of driveling must be observed for the craft and traditions of the artform to be kept alive and well. I close now and wish all of you the very best in inanity and driveling. The Jackleg Jagov whose stupid criticisms of Seamus and Birdy started this whole mess can now go ahead and kiss Big Mick's entire ass. Its a huge undertaking but I know our pissant Guest can do it well and probably with a passion.

See? There ya' go right there! The good Captain himself posts some inane drivel and even includes a link to it. Now that's a kinda' far out touch and.........................................uh...........wait a minute here.......................hmmm...................Okay, my mistake. That post is actually directly about the thread topic and not in fact inane drivel after all. Its easy to be tricked at times which is why I diligently check for proper inanity in all the drivel.

Happy to serve!

Joe. "don't have the courtesy or courage to use the same name in every post" - tell me TWO where I haven't (there was one I forgot to sign at all about a year ago). I don't have a problem with Dick or his music, or Baby Taylors - the point was that up to my intervention (apart from Mick's two contributions) the whole thread was a mutually congratulatory conversation between Dick & Seamus - is this what Mudcat is for? You have already said this contribution is not welcome - but I don't know why - will you delete it?

Sure it is. Over the past ten years I've seen it happen dozens and dozens of times. From Max on down the list, its never been uncommon for this place to be like that. What's the big deal? Nothing to go nuts over but if that's your passion, go ahead!

I am not sure what I did to deserve such a rebuke. I have spent the whole of my 10+ years here trying to fit in with the "Inane Drivel Boys and He Man Women Haters Club", and just like that I get accused of being relevant. This really pisses me off.

I am also mightily pissed off that my "friend" Seamus who said:

Seamus, you know damn full well that my willie only fit in the overhead bin of a 747, and that it took a vessel of that size!!!! No 727's, or Airbus', only the biggest ones. Other than when I am on a Jumbo Jet I have always had to check it through. But I always insisted on a hand inspection from TSA. You silly wee man.......

I need to add to the admiration side here .. I have so very much enjoyed Dick Miles's clips on Youtube . They are way up my list of favorites.. I would have loved to have been there with a guitar or banjo or hell, set of ears . Nothing like a great thread on a great session . A central theme to what mudcat is here for.. Thanks Max as always !!! and thanks for the pertinent subject . Maybe another session will come from it !!! All the best , Guy

Excuse me, guys and gals, but we're losing the inanity here....

Hey Dick, I love your CD, Concertinas and....excellent work.

I'm a great fan of Hornpipes, and I was delighted to hear the Belfast Hornpipe, Madam Bonaparte, the Boys of Blue Hill and others.

The reels, jigs and slow airs are great too: The Sally Gardens, Maid Behind The Bar and Congress and Providence Reel to mention a few.

Your versions of the songs Seeds of Love, and the Croppy Boy highlight your powerful voice and strong trad singing technique.

I've heard Cathy Cook, your partner play fiddle and DC melodeon in session, but her concertina and harmonium backing on this CD is tasteful indeed, as is her son Niall's concertina playing.

Keep up the good work.

Seamus
