I suspect you're going to be unlucky. Most of the sessions in the Buxton area don't take place on Fri/Sat/Sun. There is a session at the Manners in Bakewell on Thursdays and one in the Buckingham in Buxton the same night. A bi-weekly session in the Eagle on Wednesdays and several others on Mon/Tues. There's even Beth Neilsen Chapman playing the Buxton Opera House but that's on the 20th.

If you can stand it, we're playing the Octagon in the Pavilion Gardens on the Saturday afternoon. Its an annual charity event and we're supporting the lifeboats. When we're on, what the line-up will be and what we'll be playing remains to be seen; but that's not unusual. If you rehearse, you can get things wrong!

You could always change your dates!
Ray

Barley Mow, Bonsall near Matlock on Friday night. A bit hit and miss, depending on who turns up, can be brill, more often a good-time standards do. Can be very noisy.

There are occasional sessions around the Whaley Bridge/ Chinley area, but at the moment they tend to be sporadic, grapevine efforts.

There's a regular Friday night tune session at Gawsworth, near Macclesfield - usually a mixture of Irish, English and other stuff, including the occasional song.

On Saturday 22 November there's a ceilidh with Boldwood at Poynton www.poyntonceilidh.co.uk

Both are about 40 minutes drive from Taddington.

I've not been there for years but there always used to be something at the The Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires on Saturday nights.
Now there's a pub with 'character' in its own right .....

There used to be a Bluegrass/Old Timey session on a Sunday afternoon in The Quiet Woman, Earl Sterndale - just a few miles away from Taddington - but it has not been on the last couple of times that I have called. However it might be worth popping over to check just to experience the most quaint pub in that area.

Bonsall can be very good as Richard says. there is a very good pizza restaurant in Bakewell opposite the Austrian cafe (which incidentally does a fabulous Austrian sausage soup). the people doing the pizzas are folk enthusiasts and they will know if anything is going on.

If theres nowt you could have a pizza.

I'm doing a session with some mates at The King William in Milford on the 27th. No use to you I'm afraid.

Hi Geoff
You can't PM me I'm only a guest! Yes, the Octagon is in Buxton - its part of the Pavilion Gardens. You can't exactly miss it. There is the Opera House, the Paxton Suite and the Octagon - which is more often than not used for exhibitions. They are all set in a formal garden area.

I assume you'll end up in Buxton sometime during the weekend anyway. The restaurant is quite good for lunch but make sure you don't confuse it with the self service cafe or the Art Cafe upstairs - its the posh looking one you want.

Its not a formal event on Sat. Its an annual charity thing with stalls promoting them and selling things. A couple of musical mates are on the local RNLI committee and a couple of us normally help them out with some sort of musical thingy. We'll probably decide what we're doing at the Buckingham session on Thursday night. There will be other things on - usually inc. the erstwhile BBC presenter Colin Sykes with his quartet - but I can't say exactly what. The acoustics are terrible, the sound is usually ropy so I wouldn't encourage you to make a special trip but its somewhere to go if its raining.
Cheers
Ray

There'll be a new series of English Music sessions at The Vernon Arms in Sudbury which will hopefully run on the second Sunday lunchtime from around 12.30 to about 3 pm - ish lead by Keith Kendrick and Jan Rockett.
The first one is Sunday 11th January 2009.

Singers are very welcome too - but it is intended to be predominantly a tune session.

Come and swell the numbers and bring some good tunes and chorus songs with you.

If you're in Buxton and want lunch can I suggest Beltane, which is a small cafe up the steep hill on the road opposite The Old Hall Hotel which runs alongside the small park (which is behind St Anne's Well).

Good food and a much more convivial than the school dining halls of the pavilion.

I seem to recall some of the people from the Chesterfield Folk Club have a regular session somewhere in Brampton, but I can't for the life of me remember the details, and there doesn't seem to be any mention of it on their web site,

John

Thursday nights, The Peacock, Brampton (on Chatsworth Rd, just a few yards out of town from the Morrison's roundabout). Doesn't usually fire up till 9.30-ish. Tomorrow night the Brampton Community Band practices there 7.00 till 9.00 beforehand. (Well worth a listen - English dance music)
