I have recently taken out a reseller account with Webhosting UK You can have 300Mb of space for about £20/year, lots of email boxes, email redirects, email lists, subdomains, MySQL databases, PHP and lots of other bells and whistles, technical support from me (there had to be a snag somewhere...) and upgrades in file space and monthly bandwidth as needed.

I mostly use it for sites that I maintain myself - Pig Dyke Molly are on it, and I'm moving Suffolk Folk there when its current hosting expires. I've also set up a charity site for the Sheffield Fibromyalgia self-help group and and giving their new webmaster (who was technically clueless but is learning fast) a lot of help - basically setting it up so she can maintain it mostly herself.

My plan (for some value of..) is to do a kind of value-added web hosting - anything from just pointing you in the right direction and answering the odd tech question to building and maintaining the site entirely myself, charging rather more if I'm having to do a lot of work. I chose WebHosting UK because I wanted PHP and MySQL at a good price - I've recently discovered the delights of database-backed web sites and I want to do more...

Webhosting UK aren't bad if you just get their £19.99/year hosting package direct from them, and their technical support is competent and responsive. You still get all those server features if you want them.

I used Bravehost. Completely free and if you use their templates, as many pages as you like up to 5GB I believe, might be more. Have ay sites. Here is the Orpington one which has a link to Fox and Hounds

That sounds good.
I was lucky because my ISP gave me a free website with loads of space and allowed me to use Frontpage. The thing I like about Frontpage, is that you can let it do the donkey work and then edit it afterwards.

I thought you could control access so that it could be wide open are closed at a number of levels.

If you don't mind paying for your site, there are lots of reliable and cheap hosting packages around. I've been using Secure Web Hosting for both of my sites for years, and never had a single problem. Each site costs £29 a year for the cheapest package, and you get a lot for your money. A doman name will cost you about £4 a year on op of that.

You can design your site in Frontpage 2003, and publish it via the same; if I can do it, believe me - anybody can.

The maiin thing if you use them to get the name, have a look around for a decent host and get the site redirected to them. I don't think they are too great on the hosting side. Good luck on that.

I'm glad I saw this thread, I'm doing a Web design course at the moment with a view to setting a site up for our folk club, we're myspaced at the moment but you have to be a member to look at anything beyond the front page!

Villan, that web hosting company you've suggested may come in handy for me in the near future, thanks!!

My son (the one who knows everything) did my other website

Several years before Myspace came along for free.

I must say that Myspace is dead easy to update. It also gets the most hits and notification.
It keeps me up to date with what my friends are up to.
And spreads to them what I'm playing at.

If you are putting music up, remember to get permission from the artist first and to state that you have somewhere on the page. It shouldn't be an issue - they've all got Myspace pages to promote themselves anyway!.

5quidhost do a free web site offering, and I've had very good reports from colleagues who have set up sites on their servers.

Of course, the answer to the original question is "get someone else to do it".

This is where I got my Website name from http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ Very cheap if you stick to .co.uk

I then got them to redirect the website to my ISP who then set up mywebspace account.

I use Frotpage (which is dead easy) to make my changes to the website and then upload it with Frontpage. However if you use frontpage you have to make sure that the site that hosts your website can handle Frontpage and they also need to allow you to use Frontpage.

You have to do a bit of adapting of what they call their categories - that's what I've done at the Folk at The Royal Oak, Lewes, MySpace. You'd be very welcome to copy what we have done as as template.

I also maintain our club's full website at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic/.

The Myspace is a lot more cheap and cheerful than the full website but it is a damn sight easier to maintain - and at the looking at the current count numbers for both sites, the MySpace seems to be getting more visitors.

Forget myspace -look for a blog site. They are more effective and accessible. Try www.blogger.com, I believe you can set up a site from anywhere in the world - and it is free.

Les: just make sure you set up your Myspace in the musician bit, not in the common people bit. That means you can put in six music tracks, and have a schedule of dates and stuff. You probably know all this, but it's worth repeating, because beginners can get caught out and have to redo it all(I did!)

I like the cut of your jibbing Myspace! Clean and clear. I have been a bit confused my some exotic backgrounds and references to alternative lifestyles on some Myspaces but when I have taken advice from my son who knows everything, I will get stuck in.

Mine is nothing great, but I can advertise upcoming events and people can go to the other website.

Use Myspace Les - go in as a singer, but then set it up as a Folk Club website. Its free

or you can get a cheap website in your folk clubs name as i have done and I use my ISP for handling the website. I am lucky, becuase they handle it for nowt. My own website is more flexible and very simple to change etc.
