Penguin Egg, old bean, Fackin' Landonahs should stop moaning about how difficult it is to get to gigs. You get the best performers, with the greatest frequency, you have tubes and buses which are comparatively cheap, run frequently, and run until very late in the evening. What more do you want - maybe you'd like these guys to come and play in your house?

You should try living out here in the backwoods (it's tough waking up to the sound of nothing but bird-song, and sauntering to work down the quiet, winding, leafy lanes but someone has to do it), where it's impossible to get to any gig which is outside the town/village where you live by public transport, because there is no fackin' public transport (either that or the last bus/train home is at 8pm). So it's drive or stay at home, which means we can't tank up on our beloved Real Ale. And we can't afford champers on our farmhand's wages, even if it was available in our dingy folk-clubs. :-)

Oh dear! We've got Dick coming to the Royal Oak in Lewes in November 2009. Does that mean that we will have to get builders in to 'distress' the club room before his visit?

I'll get the lads from East London to pop round sometime Vic. That should sort you.

Isn't it amazing that such a figure as Dick Gaughan is prepared to travel to play a gig at a small venue at the bottom of a foreign country and still delight his audience whilst others moan about having to catch a few trains?

Perhaps that is WHY Dick Gaughan is so respected and admired; he goes where some people want to hear him.

What?

Chris Wood in a dingy old folk club in the company of beer swilling folkies?

Surely he should be picking more suitable venues such as Wembley Stadium or (better still) my front room.

That way I won't even have to put my shoes on. Makes perfect sense.

It is amazing how Mudcatters can manage to scare up a fight out of the most innocuous circumstances. Someone posts a concert booking (which personally I would love to see and travel a log way to do so, except that it is on the other side of the Atlantic) and someone else comlains it isn't in their backyard.

And the battle is on!

And I love dingy folk clubs in Godforsaken places.

Now on to December and Chris Wood - and another thread :)

We have had Mike Wilson at the club in his duo with Damien Barber.

But all that is seriously off topic! But not for mudcat I guess

Sorry Kevin if I came across in the wrong manner - you might have guessed !!!! I live in the North, I was thinking of people like the Wilsons ,and the Doonans etc who never seem to play in London , though,I suppose travel /logistics is a large part of the problem.
Good luck to all the clubs mentioned .

Hey PE if you have a problem with dingy folk clubs often dozens of tube stops from home the solution is obvious. Dicks agent is John Barrow at the Stoneyport Agency who you can email on jb@stoneyport.demon.co.uk

Drop him a line and negotiate a date and a fee and then sort out a venue more in keeping with your tastes (suggest the Albert Hall) and run the show yourself.

You'll then need to do a website and some posters and leaflets and don't forget Time Out. You'll get lots of calls and emails to deal with. And you'll need get some people together to manage the door and the seating oh and don't forget the PA.

Naturally "This is both time consumming (sic) and a lot of work, especially if it is a work day." but it's what the rest of us do in order to run our "dingy folk clubs"

But it's all worth while especially when you think of the oppotunities is gives people like you to bellyache that you have to change buses a couple of times.

The London scene strangely doesn't seem to be able to cater for the (how can I say) the upper echelon of Folk festival performers though I note Twickfolk has healthy list of good performers

In general small venues are preferable for me, as I like the intimate atmosphere and relative closeness of the guest.

Well try and get to us in Walthamstow, Betsy you'll find a similarly healthy list as Twickemham, and we are small and intimate. Of course I mean the venue!!!

It's a shame Twickenham and ourselves are the same night, Sundays. It's a miracle we can do it being so close together why even in the same city ;-)

And have a good one Goose, can't be there myself but will see you in December when I think I can "honestly" say that I'm doing a support, or is that another thread?

And just a last, hopefully amusing bit re DG to get back on topic. A few years ago we had him booked but it had to be rescheduled at short notice as he needed an operation. Everyone understood the situation apart from one person who complained bitterly that Dick should waited until the end of the tour before having his op. I was flabbergasted at the attitude and asked the person if he really knew Dick and did he assume he was having it done privately on BUPA or somesuch! Amazing.

The trouble is "London" is a small word but a f*cking BIG place.
Travel across it is not aleays THAT easy.
I'm sure Dick would love a 10 Day tour playing each and every part of London but it doesn't work like that. Well done to all who have booked him - he is a class act and a gent.
The London scene strangely doesn't seem to be able to cater for the (how can I say) the upper echelon of Folk festival performers though I note Twickfolk has healthy list of good performers which includes another (all to infrequent) visitor to London - Vin Garbutt.
In general small venues are preferable for me, as I like the intimate atmosphere and relative closeness of the guest.
As for Penguin Egg, I have cut and paste from his/her message of 04:31 AM., and I decleare that I am at a complete loss why he /she "......is usually treated either with contempt or with overarching condescension by the folk clubs ..."
A total mystery to me.

I've travelled over 200 miles to see Dick Gaughan - and I'd do it again (in fact I am, in January).

I'd prefer it if he performed in my front room, but you can't have everything.

Either make the effort PE or don't bother (but don't whinge).

Hope you Goose Is Out guys have a great night tonight and best of luck with your new venture.

Please enlighten us, Penguin Eggs.

Which exact part of "dingy folk club in some Godforsaken place" and "bunch of bearded REAL ALE swigging self righteous prigs" was not intended to cause offence ?

:-)

In addition to the characteristics Kevin has highlighted above you're also distinctly lacking any semblance of a sense of humour, my waddling friend!

I think your post tells us a lot about you PE.

The posts on this thread have in the most part been reasonable responses to your "Central London'ist" attitude.

The only self righteousness I see comes from one place. As for contempt and condescension, similarly.

However I shall now refrain from adding any extra "vinegar" to go with the massive chip on your shoulder.

No. I don't speak for Dick. I speak for myself, a member of the public who is usually treated either with contempt or with overarching condescension by the folk clubs, as this thread shows.

From: GUEST,The Goose

This thread has just been brought to my attention, and there are a number of points I'd like to make as the other half of the Goose.

First: The Goose Is Out! was started specifically because there was no folk venue within easy reach of East Dulwich. We were trekking over to Walthamstow (very enjoyable evenings but a long journey) or up to town (not quite such a long journey but still a trek) in order to listen to the music we love.

We asked local people whether they would be interested in folk events and they said yes. We are not trying to attract people from other parts of London, that is not our intention.

However, strangely enough, our "dingy" "club" attracts regular punters from as far afield as Tunbridge Wells and Brighton as well as from other parts of London (we know this because we sell tickets on WeGotTickets and we get the names and postcodes of ticketbuyers).

Second: Our first venue held 120 people and almost all our events sold out. Our new venue holds 200 people - our first event was full and our Dick Gaughan gig has sold over 140 advance tickets so far. Clearly some people seem to think it's worth coming to East Dulwich to see Dick.

Third: As mentioned above, Dick does not say "ooh, I think I'll go and play a club in central London, that won't be out of the way". He goes where people ask him to go, and we feel privileged to have him come to East Dulwich considering he lives in Scotland.

Fourth: Again as mentioned above, put up or shut up Penguin Person. If you fancy putting your own money on the line (artists have minimum guaranteed fees you know - in some cases extremely high) and spending 90% of your "spare" time on a lot of high-stress activities in order to give people a great evening once a month, then start promoting your own folk venue.

If you just want to slag off other people's venues because (shame!) they are not within easy reach of the place where very important you lives, then STFU.

Fifth: If you could be bothered to get off your arse and come to our "dingy" club (candlelit and fairylight lit, actually) in a "Godforsaken place" (five minutes from a station and on a nightbus route into Oxford Circus) you would find it full of enthusiastic people, four different real ales, and excellent quality support artists (just have a look on our website. You'd normally have to pay to see many of them, and at the Goose they're included in your ticket price for our main artist.)

We also have excellent DJing from Big Chill DJs Folk2Future and a late bar till whenever the last person leaves (plus the nightbus of course so that last person can get home).

We think it's worth more than a ten minute walk, and clearly so do a lot of other people.

Sixth: Re the "missing the point" - you clearly have no idea whatsoever of where Dick Gaughan is coming from, musically and politically. Have you actually listened to any of his music? Do you know anything about him at all? If he could choose to play places, I'm pretty sure it would not be the centrally situated clubs he would be heading for.

When he comes to the Goose tomorrow, we'll ask him :)

Meanwhile, Penguin, we shall be happy never to see you in East Dulwich - in fact, I would go so far as to say, please don't darken our door. We like enthusiastic people at our events who appreciate our venue and the efforts we make for them.

Banjiman, you're forgetting something.

Despite the fact Penguin Eggs has the luxury of three different options to see Dick Gaughan around London there's still the dinginess of the venue to overcome. They're all FOLK CLUBS after all.

I understand unlike the RAH and RFH most "dingy folk clubs" don't even supply you with opera glasses!! (Mmmm....I wonder whether that's because they don't need them?)

To make matters worse they actually serve you drinks in GLASSES rather than plastic!

Sheesh....I don't know HOW they survive!

Central London is central for everyone living in London, even people living in Dulwich. Look, I don't mean to be rude. Guest has done a good job in getting Gaughan to play at his club. However, Gaughan is a major folk artist and he should be doing gigs at more signifcant venues, not in these out of the way folk clubs that are difficult to find. My gripe is not with Guest but rather the lack of appreciation shown to folk music in general and major folk artists in particular.

Wjat a ridiculous self-centered "I'm the most important person around so come to me" attitude from the Thatcherite era! Thought we were all past that.

We'll happily be having DG again in Walthamstow next year, that's somewhat near Central London if you compare it with Leeds!

Dick Gaughan is playing The Cellar Upstairs (near Euston Station) on 29 November and you can't get much more central than that. He does this venue every year at around this time. I'm purposely not giving a link to make it not so easy for the miserable, large, black & white flightless bird to locate it.
DG has done Bush Hall before for a BBC4 recording. The sound was atrocious.

The most salient point that 'Penguin Egg' is missing.....strange as it may seem artists don't actually "pick" the venues they play!

If it wasn't for enthusiastic 'below the radar' promoters (like The Goose Is Out) being prepared to do a lot of hard work into making these events happen (and be successful) perhaps Dick wouldn't be playing ANYWHERE tomorrow night (or on Sunday either!)

Put your money where your mouth is, mate, and see if you can promote a central London gig....hire a non "dingy" venue like Bush Hall, Cadogan Hall, Wigmore Hall etc and see if you can fill it (or not be out of pocket)

Failing that.....kindly do everyone (including Dick) a favour and STFU.
