I'm going to this, but bought the tickets when they were first announced based on the advertised '12 noon till 11pm'. Since it really starts at 1pm and contains 3 and a half hours where nothing is happening, I feel a little misled. I'd still have bought the tickets, probably, but I'm not sure how I'll pass all that dead time.

Take a look around the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library if it's open. If not call back another time. There's enough in there to keep anyone occupied for a lifetime.

Well we had a great time. Had travelcards, so went off on the tube into London and had some very nice Harveys Best. Made the evening concert very enjoyable (and no need to drink Greene King :) )
It's not obligatory to wander round Camden for hours (which we did at the RVW day and didn't want to repeat)

Good to see Dave Swarbrick looking so well, and it's always good to see Mike Waterson. And Eliza was positiely blooming.
Thanks to all who organised this. (and all the artists wo gave their services for the library)

There were lots of lovely stories about Bert and a preview of Dave Arthur's book on the man.

There were several memorable moments for me, not the least being Frankie Armstrong's rendering of Bert's version of Tam Linn.

But my favourite comical moment was Dave Swarbrick relating Bert's first words to him. Dave said that they stayed with him for ever - and they were - "Try not to do that again!".

There's a report of A Tribute to Bert in the current issue of English Dance & Song (we held back the printing so we could include the report and photos, and then rushed the printing!). And there are more photos on the EFDSS website, www.efdss.org

English Dance & Song Magazine see http://eds.efdss.org/
70 - 4 Winter 2008
48-page Full Colour issue!!!

Shirley Collins MBE is on the front cover to mark her election as the new President of the EFDSS.

A theme of this issue is the singer, folklorist, broadcaster and writer A.L. (Bert) Lloyd in the centenary year of his birth.

Bert Lloyd was well-known as a great mentor and encourager of younger singers, often re-working songs from the manuscripts and books for performance.

In this spirit, the Singer, Song and Source article features Brian Peters whose recent CD of ballads includes several songs that have been newly adapted. The song is Brian's re-write of 'Six Nights Drunk', a song that Bert recorded in an Australian version, 'Shickered as he could be': it is thought that Bert did his own re-write of this particular song to give it more of a 'Aussie Bush' feel to it.
Brian also contributes an article on his approach to working with the ballads, with a number of references to Bert Lloyd.

Continuing the Bert Lloyd theme, there's a personal memoir by film-maker Barrie Gavin who worked on several projects with Bert, and a report on the Tribute to Bert event held in mid-November.

Is there any news on Dave Arthur's biography? From memory this was originally scheduled to be ready for the centenery event, but the deadline couldn't be met. It's been almost a year since then.
