Subject: If I were to get just ONE album...

...of Kathryn Tickell's Northumbrian pipes playing, which one of hers should I get? Sunday I heard a bit of her playing on Thistle and Shamrock and was completely awed. I've listened to clips on her site, and it's lovely fiddle music, but there's troops of lovely fiddle players out there whose recordings I have. My collection is low on smallpipes and though I'd heard her name, and heard her music, I'd never before this week put the two together and got a bad case of "I NEED some of that to listen to."

So, what's the best/most/niftiest/PIPINGEST of her albums?

Hi
Sorry no one has heeded your plea so far. Problem my be in title of thread. Music lovers cannot comprehend the thought of only ONE album.

You might start by doing a search in Mudcat for Kathryn Tickell

http://supersearch.mudcat.org/@NewSSResults.cfm

You might get some ideas from the link above.

Good luck

Your request reminded me of the title of one of Jean Ritchie's albums, "The Most Dulcimer."
She reported that people were always asking her which of her recordings had the most dulcimer.

If you want to hear Geordie pipes played properly, beautifully, I'd suggest one of Pauline Cato's CDs.

The player generally regarded as the best Northumbrian piper ever to have lived is Billy Pigg who died in 1968. Find someone who taped the Lost Leader Wild Hills O' Wannie - you'll be hard put to find it in any other format. Meanwhile, among living pipers, there's nowt wrong with Wor Kathryn.

Her first one is reckoned her best amongst many pipers.

Billy Pigg is highly rated by some players, and regarded as "a bad player" by others.

Consider also Chris Ormston, Andy May, Andy & Margaret Watchorn, Andrew Davison, Adrian Schofield.

Thanks to the forum editor who renamed the thread -

Before starting this, I HAD wandered among Mudcat threads refering to Kathryn Tickell, as well as looked at her own site, but still did not come away with an answer to which would be the "most piping." It IS rather like the request to Jean Ritchie in intent.
I'd heard the name of Billy Pigg, but not the playing. So far I've more familiarity with ullian pipers, and obviously need to expand my listening range a bit farther.
I appreciate all the leads/names offered.

'The Northumberland Collection' has got to be the one, a bit of everything and ending with that wonderful song 'Fareweel Regality' written and performed by Terry Conway.

Billy Pigg stretched the boundaries of Northumbrian piping in his time. (1902-68) His piping is very strongly grounded in traditional style, but by the time he was recorded he was ill, frail, and had absorbed a lot of influences from other places.

According to those who knew him, he was an exciting performer, very involved in his music, and inspiring others to "go out & do likewise" despite numbers of technical errors, and an appalling sense of timimg (particularly on slower tunes).

Some of the recordings of him (there are lots in private hands) were made on machinery which did not give a reliable pitch, or were done from the radio, or were made when he was seriously ill.

His influences included his father's Highland piping, the Northumbrian piping of his teacher & friend Tom Clough, the Armstrong family (not Jack Armstrong - the other one), the music he heard on the radio (everything from Hawaian (sp?) music to Radio Eireann), the playing of John Doonan and others.

He wrote a number of extremely good tunes which are now published and influenced a generation of players.

His detractors say that it was not proper Northumbrian piping - the chief complaints being his sense of timing and his use of excessive ornamentation. Part of the timing thing was due to his illness, part to variable recording devices, part to the fact that he was not a dance musician but a soloist.

What he has to teach today's pipers is the importance of a sound grounding in traditional playing (which can be heard in his playing), before braching out to explore the boundaries of the instrument. The durability of a good tune. The importance of live performance and relating to an audience.

Does that help?
