The Orvis mail order catalogue comes to the door along with Land's End, LLBean, Sears, Smithsonian, Hammacher Schmiel, Acorn and lots of others. Tons of recycling paper. Just another mass market mail order company now.

Some of Orvis' rods are still made in their factory in Manchester, Vermont, but they are the models you need to sell your car and take a second mortgage on your house to purchase.

Funny, tho, - that the cost savings on all of this made in China & other slave labor enclaves flooding the U.S. is never passed on to the consumer, ain't it?

There are still a lot of good fly rods being made in the states (mostly in the $300 and up range) by Winston, St. Croix, Scott, Sage, G. Loomis and other smaller shops but some of those MIC's stand up pretty well against the high end sticks.
As for flies, I like to use flies I tie myself but if something is beyond my meager tying skills I prefer locally tied ones which seem to last longer and catch more fish. They're a bit more expensive but still generally a better buy than those from overseas factories,IMHO.

The old ones were always made from split bamboo. The bamboo likely came from China.

My fly rod was made in the US, but then it only cost me $25 for the whole kit -- new. I suspect that Orvis has better fly rods.

Boy you are so right Michelle, amazing what they cost and then to find out yup it is from China. You know the markup has to be incredible on them for I bet they are getting them for a few dollars and charging hundreds because of the name. nothing sacred anymore. Orvis my goodness who would have thought

Hey Old Dude,

    What's really amazing is the price they get for those rods made in China, Orvis or not. We have a fly fishing/fly tying/graphite wrapped rods or custom built bamboo rod business....it's the name people are interested in. Check out the prices of the flies you can get....all made overseas for pennies...can't do it here in the states, it just isn't feasible....even if you do it because you LOVE it and aren't trying to make a buck.

    Ah well. Enjoy that new rod of yours....the fish won't mind where it came from. *G*

Well I received a nice new fly fishing pole that my daughter bought for me for my birthday (took awhile). I got all excited, yes it is the rod I wanted so I can actually bring it on the plane when I visit them in Colorado and do some fly fishin ... Guess what

The Orvis (one of the great american fly fishing companies since the 1800's).. yup .. their fly rods are yup Made in China !!!

Everything is today I guess .. I have nothing against China made, heck .. but ORVIS .. come on is nothing sacred !!
