I use Harmony Assistant in the production of the musical notation for my web-site 'Songs of the Inland Waterways' and rather like it. At the moment I screen dump the score and then tinker with it in another program. I have been thinking about using the Melody Assistant plug-in on the web-site but can't, at the moment, access the Myriad web-site to find out more about it. Hopefully the site will become available again soon but, while I wait, I was wondering if any Mudcatters had experience of using this plug-in (which allows a degree of manipulation of the score by the user)? Comments welcome.
Ian

I have used the plug-in occasionally, mainly as an alternative to emailing pdfs and MIDIs to a known group of people. It's fairly straightforward to use and no-one who wanted to hear my music had any real trouble with it, though I don't think they used many different browsers.

Is this something that would be a worthwhile help to someone with limited "ear" and music theory, whose music writing ability doesn't go much beyond getting a melody line down? I manage to work out melodies between the wife's piano and Voyetra Music Write, but further arranging is an uphill, trial and error, battle for me. Music Write supposedly will add chords, but my results with it have been pretty disheartening.

Ian, I'm not really certain what it is you want to do. I've been using Melody Assistant for a while and am happy with it but I understood that Harmony Assistant is the more sophisticated program that does everything MA does, and then some.

Their site appears to be working OK at the moment.

Hi Ian, I use Harmony Assistant a great deal - for capturing abc files on the web and saving them as .mus files, and for writing guitar, banjo and mandolin music and tab. I also had assumed that Melody Assistant was a cheaper and less sophisticated version of Harmony Assistant.

What was it in particular that you wanted to do which is causing problems?

Thanks for contributions so far. I was thinking about using the Melody/Harmony plug-in so that musical scores could be displayed on my web-site and that those viewing them would have more control over such things as viewing them, printing them out and even transposing to another key. Since my first request, the Myriad site appears to be back on-line and I have tried out a trial page. It didn't work particularly well, crashing for some reason (probably my fault). The score also appears rather small initially, though magnification is a user option. I think that my web-site would become dependent on the plug-in being available from the Myriad web-site and if it went down mine would cease to function properly. Though I will look into this further, I am inclined to 'keep it simple' when it comes to my site.
Having said all that I am delighted with the Harmony Assistant program (and Melody Assistant which I used previously), though I barely scratch the surface when it comes to using all its facilities.
Cheers,
Ian

I've got a whole list of stuff I've arranged and tabbed with Harmony Assistant. I usually save a file as PDF by using the "Print score" facility and then selecting the Save as PDF option (I use a Mac, by the way, so it might be different if you use a PC).

I then upload the PDF to my website and make a link on my "tabs" page. You can see examples at:
my website tab page

Seems to work OK - sometimes the thick/thin vertical lines in the section breaks in the score look a little weird but, apart from that, it seems to be adequate.
