Your favourite Gordon Lightfoot song?

DigiTrad:
BALLAD OF THE YARMOUTH CASTLE
BEST YEARS OF HER LIFE
BIG STEEL RAIL
DID SHE MENTION MY NAME
IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND
I'M NOT SAYING
IN THE EARLY MORNING RAIN
LOST CHILDREN
THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR LOVING ME
THE EDMUND FITZGERALD

It's hard to pick just one, but I think that "If You Could Read My Mind" may be his finest one, all things considered.

Mind you, there are about 10 or 20 others right alongside it...

Enjoy the subject, and name your favourite Lightfoot song.

Oh, O K, I will

'Sit Down Young Stranger'

but I learned most of the others except CRT and Ed Fitz

I sometimes go into 'Did she mention my name' after a chat in the street with someone I hadnt seen for a while

'Bitter Green' was a great 4 piece group busking song

Very fond opf 'Don Q'

and I haven't all of him as I dropped out shortly after then returned years later so Ive much to catch up on

So many songs , old and new, so little time,

Pumphouse Watford tonight as an option, Moses and the ref main attraction

For me it has to be "Ghosts of Cape Horn", though I've always had a fondness for the Edmund Fitzgerald.

As for needing someone like that now, I know he released an album recently and I had heard rumors of a 2008 tour. Sounds to me like Mr. Lightfoot isn't done yet.

Who could want for anything more in life.........

Song For A Winter's Night

"The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
The snow is softly falling
The air is still within the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you

The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me

If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you

The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are liftin'
The morning light steals across my windowpane
Where webs of snow are driftin'

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you
And to be once again with with you"

"If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you"

I've always liked "Rainy Day People" because of its upbeat perspective. I know other people have listed it, my all-time favorite is "Edmund Fitzgerald," because it's about MY Great Lakes, where I grew up. I don't know if I saw the ship before its infamous demise, but I imagine I must have seen it among the ships that winter at Jones Island in Milwaukee. I used to spend hours there, looking at the ships.

I've always wondered why Tony Rice has never covered Lightfoot's "Redwood Hill". He's done so many other Lightfoot songs and "Redwood Hill" is very bluegrass.

So many, especially the very early ones.

Top favorite is probably "10 Degrees and Getting Colder". A perfect finely etched picture with just a few strokes.   You can see the guy by the side of the road and feel it getting colder by Boulder Dam as the sun goes down.

Other great Lightfoot songs, most of which have been already mentioned:

Early Morning Rain
Did She Mention My Name?
Ribbon of Darkness
Long Way Back Home
Edmund Fitzgerald
For Lovin' Me
I'm Not Sayin'
Canadian Railroad Trilogy
The Way I Feel
If You Could Read My Mind--even the soupy strings work--somehow.
Sundown

Lightfoot didn't write "On Susan's Floor". Shel Silverstein and vince Matthews did. It, along with "Me & Bobbie McGee" was one of the rare cover songs he recorded.

"Don Quixote"
"Pony Man"
"Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
"Canadian Railroad Trilogy"
"Song for a Winter's Night"
"Did She Mention My Name?"

There, that's one for each day of the week. Truthfully, it depends on the mood I'm in and also on the location. There are too many for me to single any one out.

I left one out that may not be as well known and, perhaps, not a favorite of many. He did a sort of "trucker's anthem" called "Long Thin Dawn" years ago. For some reason, it resonated with me.

That one got played by Jack at our Tuesday night song circle tonight, as did several others. I played covers of "Carefree Highway", "Cotton Jenny", and "Christian Island". Didn't quite get around to "Pussy Willows, Cattails" this time, but have been doing it lately. Lightfoot seems to be really popular around here the last while.
