Tom's songs and Mike's commentaries are excellent.

*urp*

Shall have to fire up the laptop. I love Tom Russell's songs. IMO, he's one of the top 5 best songwriters of folkish music, and I'll bet he's at the top of the list for many.

To my personal taste, he's the best now writing.

Utah, Ian Tyson, Jim Ringer, Stan Rogers, Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver, all crowded in just beneath him, too close to call second.

I may not buy the anthology only because I think I have everything on it, on one or more of the CDs I already have.

Peter

PS He has some nice short prose pieces on his blog.

It looks like the blog link in my first post isn't working.

Playlist blog link that should work.

In the blog, Mike says: "I think Tom Russell is the best singer-songwriter of my generation – the generation that came along 10 or 15years after Dylan."

This just finished and I am now just hearing of it. What a trip it would have been.

I don't think Utah, Jim Ringer and Stan Rogers are now writing.

Of course, we have been getting all these "new" Woody Guthrie songs in the past few years. So maybe there will be more from Utah, Jim or Stan.

OK, so I sometimes tangle myself up in my own syntax. I'm certainly not alone among 'catters in doing so.

Besides, I suspect those three are still writing, somewhere.

Wow--that number on the death of "Gallo de'l Cielo" is awesome. An amazing song.

A terrific singer-songwriter.I especially enjoy "Veteran's Day", "Whose Gonna Build Your Wall" and "Blue Wing", though there are many other great ones.

I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast and look forward to the second one. Unlike Midchuck (who does a great job on a number of Tom Russell's songs), I don't have many of his CDs and will likely get this anthology.

I bought the double CD when I went to watch him in Bristol. His performance was excellent, the CD is brilliant. Haven't had time to listen to the podcast yet, but looking forward to it.

You want to get The Man From God Knows Where, The Long Way Around, and Song of the West, at a minimum.

Peter.

PS - Kendall has a nice rendition of The Basque on the brand new CD.

Thanks for posting the link. It was nice to hear Andrew Hardin get a shout out, too. A fine guitarist who performed with Tom for a long time.
