Subject: Lyr Req: Sung by Lonnie Johnson ?
From: John Routledge
Date: 21 Nov 08 - 07:28 PM

The only parts of this song I can remember are

" It was three o'clock in the morning when my baby staggered in the door - That did it!!"

"You can't keep me baby if you're gonna chase every man in town"

It was sung live on TV by possibly Lonnie Johnson around 1964 in the days when there were only two TV channels. Happy days :0)

Hope my memory has recalled enough to identify the song.

I had the honour of introducing that man for a week at Gerde's Folk City in the mid-1960s. (I was the MC.) He was awesome. What a guy and he was so kind to me. Taught me lots about the stage and stage management. Patient, friendly and dynamite as a performer.

I first came across him in the Blind Willie Dunn(a pseudonymn for Eddie Lang)/Lonnie Johnson recordings, my interest being in Eddie Lang (you can hear some of those at Red Hot Jazz BWD/LJ). He interested me enough to buy a few recordings (at least 1 record and some on cassette too I think).

There are quite a few of his early recordings at Red Hot Jazz: Lonnie Johnson.

TOO LATE TO CRY
Lonnie Johnson (1963)

1. Too late to cry, baby. Your last chance is gone.
Too late to cry, baby. Your best man is gone.
You been so mean and evil that you should be left alone.

2. I tried for so many years, but I just can't please your mind.
Tried for so many years, but I just can't please your mind.
I found out you not in love with me. It's been somebody else all the time.

3. Well, you can't keep me, baby, and chase every man in town.
Well, you can't keep it, baby, and chase every man in town.
You either gonna get me in a world of trouble, or you'll end up in six feet of ground.

4. Well, I want a woman I can love, tell the whole round world she's mine.
Well, I want a woman I can love, tell the whole round world she's mine.
I found out being in love with you is just a waste of time.

5. Well, it was three o'clock in the mornin' when my baby staggered in the door.
Yes, it was three o'clock in the mornin' when my baby staggered in the door.
I said, "Go right back where you stayed last night. Don't need daddy's love anymore."
