Gasoline (petrol), we are told, is now at a national US average of $1.99. How come, in Juneau, Alaska, we're still paying more than $3.00? The cheapest price in town that I have found is $3.09 9/10 but most of the stations display $3.19 ranging up to $3.39.

Can't do the sums myself, Noreen- but it does occur to me to wonder how long it takes the average motorist in the UK to use up a tank of fuel? In the US a long commute to work can force tanking up twice a week. A worker living in the suburbs - suburbs that can be 50 miles from the city, ('suburbs' defined according to authorities) may have no other option.

There are communities in the US that are planned to provide housing within the same community as businesses but the concept doen't seem to have taken too firm a hold yet.

It's the lowest now that I have seen it in several years: 78.9 cents a litre in Ontario, Canada. Only thing is, I don't know how to convert that into gallons for comparison to the American prices.

Funny, I'm looking at airfares from Boston to London & back during the summer & it doesn't look like they're dropping the prices any even though when fuel costs went up they added surcharges, now that the costs are down ?????

It's going the wrong way. Gas needs to be more expensive, not less, so that SUV and monster truck driving idiots aren't encouraged, and the auto industry sees the error of its ways.

I paid $1.899/gal. here in Portland, Oregon yesterday. That's down a dime a gallon from last Sunday and down about 20 cents from 2 or 3 weeks ago.
That's the cheapest price I've found in Portland, and we're about 10 cents a gallon cheaper than Seattle, on average, and about 20 cents a gallon cheaper than San Diego, usually.

I guess I must be the winner here. Thursday $1.749.

There were a couple of stations that the gas-search sites said were a couple of cents lower; but the only ones close were noted as being out of gas. (I think they drop the price when they run out, just to piss off the competition?) The sites show statewide average here at about $1.77.

The reports note that although it's come down a little, diesel is still close to $3 in most parts of the US. It's come down by less (absolute or percentage) than gasoline, so the "spread" is actually increasing.

Yesterday it was 90.9pence per litre, on Tuesday it was 92.9p and last Saturday it was 94.9p per litre. If it keeps going like this I may be able to afford to fill the whole tank up by Christmas!

Kendall, yep, we get the annual Permanent Fund Dividend, which runs from $900 to $1200 per person.

On the other hand, rent for a studio apartment here will run you about $750 + utilities (easily another $150), a one-bedroom unit about $950, a two-bedroom about $1200, a house anywhere from $2000 on up. What are your prices?

In McMinnville, Oregon, comparative rentals don't compute. My sister rents half of a duplex with a full dining room, two bedrooms, an automatic doored garage and a fenced large backyard with a lockable storage shed for $625.00.

Airfare? A Seattle-Juneau round trip costs anywhere from $550 to $625 - three weeks beforehand. A Seattle-Anchorage round trip is just over $200- but that's because there are multiple airlines in Anchorage. We have only one.

An Alaska state ferry trip to Seattle (Bellingham, a half-hour from Seattle) takes three days and costs a walk-on more than $300 one-way, plus food. If you want an onboard cabin it will cost you another $350 on top of your own carcass. If you are not a walk-on but have a car you wish to take along, that will cost another $460 dollars - for a compact car. Costs more for a larger vehicle.

Keep in mind that all these fares are for ONE WAY. If you want to come back, double all the prices; there are no price breaks.

The only thing that makes Juneau, Alaska's prices - and climate - bearable is that we get to live here!

I haven't bought gas for a couple weeks,(we don't drive a whole lot) and it was $2.07 then.... I guess it is a bit better now, though it's always higher here than in the suburbs...or across the river in Virginia. Next weekend we make 4 round-trips to a craft show in Virgina, so I guess we'll fill both the car & the van...

Enjoy...it won't last. (and the oil companies are still making money)

Several stations at $1.649 as of today in central Ohio. Most, even the little places are less than $1.729.

And while I agree we need very few SUV's if any, Karen drives 500 miles a week to work and back so this brief respite is great. WE get a price break from grocery points 30cents this month) so the last tank cost $1.43 a gallon and we'll get 50 cents off next month so we might be getting gas for close to a 1.15 maybe?????   I can dig it!

We average a little over 25 mpg with the Diamante so the difference between 4 bucks and a buck seventy five is roughly $175.00 A MONTH!!! We need the money!

82.5 cents per litre here in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It's been dropping about .4 to .5 cents everu day.

Some say its due to the dropping price of oil, but our heating oil hasn't shown a corresponding drop.

I believe they have dropped the price of gasoline to encourage us to spend money this Christmas. It will shoot back up again after the holidays.

A-dollar-fifty-nine per gallon around here. We do okay because we dig it up and refine it around here. Doesn't seem fair that Alaska doesn't get the same shake!

Very glad about the new price, hope it will allow us to travel to see family at Christmas. But still grouchy that the high prices put the kibosh on going to the O'Flaherty Retreat this fall. It's all about timing.

Too complicated to work out into something meaningful ($NZ1.49/ltr) but I see crude is 1/3 the price it was 3 weeks ago. Wonder who made all that money? Producers? Shippers? Refiners? Speculators?

Here in W. Ireland, I'm paying €1.10 a litre (about €5 a gallon = about $2) It's a bloody scandal, when oil reached its peak in July, $150 a barrel, we were paying €1.30 a litre so, by that token, as oil's now $50 a barrel, we should only now be paying €0.43 a litre. Somebody/s making an obscene profit in these troubled times!!!!!!

A month ago, here in the Oz New England, it was $1.45 (Aus) per litre ($5.80 per US gallon); it's now come down to $1.22 per litre ($4.88 per US gallon. And, even being careful and limiting the extent (~400km) and style (gentle) of my driving I still get through about 45 litres/week in the Subaru; another 7000km and it will have clocked up the half million.

I've just done the sums. Petrol costs $5.17 per US gallon today. A 50 mile daily commute is not uncommon in the UK. But 70-odd per cent of that is tax, and the government needs the cash so much more than we do.
