The WPA federal music project (for recordings, but for what else?) and projects like the Bonneville Power Administration's commission to Woody Guthrie gave us great things we wouldn't have otherwise..

What would be your hopes if similar initiatives were to start today?

I think this is a GREAT idea! I'm sure there are hundreds of the olde songs still lying hidden out there (USA), buried in boxes in attics, sung only at family gatherings, etc. Another BIG thought would be a serious archieving (sp?) of the thousands of privatly recorded tapes: wire recordings, tape recording, etc.

And, if we're lucky, maybe we could get Woody to sit down for more than five minutes and spill his guts about what it was like in the old days. Also Moses Asch, Burl Ives, etc. Bob(deckman)Nelson

I've been thinking about putting out a call for tapes so I can make copies and maybe get names of singers..I know there are a lot of boxes of homemade tapes stashed under beds and in closets that were made 40+ years ago and it seems like a good idea for someone to make a big box of tapes from the area and stash them together in a closet or under a tall bed--but I haven't convinced myself to do it yet.

It seems like a noble enough idea..maybe.
It would sure give me a chance to learn a bunch of our local forgotten/old songs.
