"Here's ma contribution tae th' album: a photo o' masel' an' "MacRodel", ma piper friend whae's postit a few times tae th' 'Cat. Th' photo wis ta'en in January '99 at a Robert Burns Nicht ceilidh in Roanoke, VA. I, Cuilionn, (kent elsewhaur as "Holly"), am th' ane haudin' th' wee buik an' wearin' fu' Scottish peasant dress. Cuilionn my dear, you are as lovely as your Scots prose and I am so glad you sent a picture. But I must say that for once, my mental image and the reality matched. It rarely happens, but what a nice surprise when it does.

On the other hand, I really felt that posting my picture would crash the system, but I did feel obligated to send some pix after so many had done so much for me and my family in May. Sorry that Wayne took the picture and wasn't in it......and the kids were impossible to round up. Thanks to Banj for the "forward" and to Bill for the posting. And of course thanks to Barbara for my little friend.

I have to say Catspaw was nothing like what I pictured, but his family looked exactly as I thought they would.

But what I really want to know is why is Matt starting to unbutton his trousers?**grin** (sorry Matt..... couldn't resist.. maybe it's my dirty mind.......) hahahaha

Well, 'Spaw! Nice 'spenders! Great looking family! Dy-no-mite dulcimers! And, I guess if I was gonna blow up a possum's arse, I'd want some clorox handy, too!

Considering where you've been recently, you look really great! Knew you'd have a great smile, reminds me of my favourite uncle's smile.

BillD, thanks! Glad you got to hear Bert's rendition of my song...sigh...he still owes me a tape....but then, he has been missing his better half, so....I guess we have to make allowances, eh?***BG***

Cuillion...looks like a great time, loved to've seen those pipes, too.

Matthew....it was worth the wait, now how about some comments to go with it?**Grin**

Love ya all,

Dear 'Spaw!

Your family is cool, and I really don't care what they look like, they will always be cool in my book.

However, what I really want to talk about is that dulcimer. Tim has one I described to you before, and it's probably close the size of the one in your picture. He's contemplating taking all the strings off, regluing some loose spots, repairing some splits, and stringing it back up only with courses of 3 and 2 instead of 4 and 3. It's going to be a bit of a big project, and I'm wondering two things.

1)any suggestions regarding pitfalls we should watch out for?

2) how much do you get for one like the one in the picture, in case we botch the whole job (*and* win the lottery!)

The only hammered dulcimers I've seen around here are little embryonic things that could pass for a lap dulcimer. Yours is an impressive creation.

Funny how the dulcimer gets all the compliments, and the mere humans only get mentioned for their foibles.

Sorry to kill the fantasy, alison , but I'm not undoing my pants in the photo. I'm just kind of tugging at my vest (perhaps subconsciously out of those same impulses that would have made me undo my pants, but that's another story).

Now, if I'd known that you wanted a picture of me taking something off, I could have e-mailed you something.

:o)

Vixen..........Sorry that I didn'y throw this in earlier! I'll send you a message re: pitfalls, but I bet you have no trouble at all. And the dulcimer pictured, a 16/15 sells for between $475. and $650. depending on woods and gadgetry. The basic 12/11 (depending on woods used) sells for $325. to $375. All use rock maple pin blocks and interior framing and 3/4" Finnish Birch laminate (not plywood) backs for maximum stability and least flex.

Sorry, Bill, no criticism was intended; I should be able to see a scroll bar. It truly is a benefit having a brilliant 17-yr old in the house. Hope we can figure out how to do some of these things on our own before he leaves us in a year. He says there's always email!

It was suggested that we might put the birthdays, email list, & photo gallery together on the Links page under a new category, like Mudcat Members. If it has its own category, it will be easier to find. What do you think?

yep...I need to figure out a way to do that clearly...trouble is, the give you three ..that's (3)! 'links' per page...I can hide more in the text beside a picture, but that was not my prefered way..(though I did in a couple of places).. I will draw myself a map of the site and see if I can make ir all clearer...(the real solution still being to learn to create a real page and upload it as a unit...(they do allow for that if you know what you are doing)..[the other real solution is to let someone...like a brillant 17 year old..*wink*...take it over and whip it into shape..]...my real problem is that REAL LIFE this summer is demanding too much of me. I know that once I get past the first big hump in the learning curve, I will say.."Oh, is THAT all there is to it?"..........(one of my parlor tricks is to walk into someone's house and program their VCR without reading the manual...I've wondered if folks would pay money to see me live...like a magician making a 747 disappear)

anyway...we shall see...(and I really will scan those pics of Max, Bert, etc. soon)

Bill, can you tell me how to keep pictures at a smaller size when e-mailing them? I noticed when I sent you mine, and again when I sent C-paws that the files were rather large. Is there not some way that they can be reduced and when you (or whomever) receives them, resized? Please advise. Thanks

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Mudcat Album-New pics!
From: Bill D
Date: 20 Jun 99 - 12:38 PM

banjer & all...the size of files is first determined by how you create them...scanning a slide, flat photo, or taking a picture with a digital camera...Some scanner & camera software has settings for how 'detailed' a picture you produce..(that is, how many pixels are crammmed into it, which determines how well it would survive being magnified & printed..(the more pixels, the better, if you want to print it out). Now, the more pixels per square inch, the bigger the size..(in bytes..and sometimes in actual screen width). You can have a fairly small picture be VERY densely packed, thus able to be zoomed on screen or printed as an 8x10...etc...but it takes disk space...so there are compromises when you email or store them..(or, when you make an online album!! That place I have the album gives me 20,000,000 bytes, which would be used up by about 18 of scarpi's pics....

now, to your question..*grin*...'if' you have a way to control the size of pic you produce, fine...if not, you would have to have a program to reduce it..that is, either by cropping [actually chopping off some parts unnesessary to the image], or by reducing the overall onscreen dimensions (from 10x14", to maybe 5x7"...which cuts the size to ¼, or by just making a copy at less resolution, which may be fine for online, but not good for printing.

There are many programs which will alter digital pictures, but you have to get and install one...(if you scanned the pic, you ought to have such a program with your scanner...if it was taken with a digital camera, you may not)...further, the format .bmp, .gif,.jpg, also determine the size...(early on, I got a couple in .bmp, which some cameras and scanner produce by default...and these are the biggest..) the same programs will 'convert' one format to another...at a price of resolution, etc...

some of the programs are simple, and essentially free, some are quite complex and expensive, (and all of them allow you to correct color, contrast, brightness, etc, to varying degrees...the pic of Roger In Baltimore had everything done to it...cropped, reduced, brightened)....so, the short answer..(ain't you glad you asked?) is that if you have a ½ million byte file, either you have to reduce/convert/crop it, or I do...(and 3 years ago, I had NO idea how any of this worked!) It can be fun to play with a free/cheap program...(lets you decide whether you want a fancy one)...but if you are not into it yet, or someone just did a pic for you and gave you a disk, then you'll just have to send it on at full size and trust me to mess with it and not ruin it...(I generally make a copy first, till I am sure I have a decent postable one.)...my only real problem is that I have a small hard drive and have to be careful how many pics I try to store.

So, this may be more than you wanted to know, but there are those new to all this who don't quite know how it works, and I wanted to try to get the overall principles noted...the details get even more complex then even I have stomach for. As the album gets bigger/better, I'm sure there will have to be decisions made...and I will need advice from those wiser in all this.

Cuilionn, just one thing I don't understand: which one in the photo are you? The fiddler or the other one?

As for the photo of me, it was taken at a ragtime dress ball, where we all dressed up like a bunch of 1910 Vanderbilts, danced only the dances that Vanderbilts in 1910 would have danced (Vintage dancing is another passion of mine), and ate lavishly (so is eating... as you can see) in a vast, guilded restaurant, complete with vaulted ceilings, opulent acoutrements, plush furniture and bronze statues. What a rush!

As I said above, Karen and I enjoyed your picture and both of us agreed that you look as we expected as opposed to say my buddy Banj, who did not wear his 4-star General F****P uniform, or as I think about it, myself, who looks like an FBI poster (WANTED FOR UNREPENTANT POSSUM ASS BLOWING).

We will be putting it at the same site as the email & birthday lists. The photo gallery will have an opening page of hot links to those Mudcatters (ABC by user name) who choose to submit their photos. Each person will be on his/her separate page, which should be quick-loading. David is also considering an ICQ list & a list to link to members' webpages. Is that of interest? I don't know exactly when we'll get it together, but we are both off for the summer, so we have more leisure than usual. Once it's set-up, it should be pretty easy to maintain. We'll put a new link on the Mudcat Links page, but any of you who have already bookmarked "bbc's Mudcat Resources" should be all set. We'll keep you informed. We're not trying to steal Bill D.'s glory. He's made a great start on the project & deserves our thanks. It's just easy for David & he has the time to do it. He's a good kid!

Thank You David for your time and effort! I'm sure that you will be receiving a lot of pictures for inclusion into the page. I would like to send a picture of my home-made lap dulcimer and would like to see other phoak's home made instruments. We have already seen C'paws' hammered dulcimer AND the home-made possum ocarina up whose petootie he (Ctaspaw) likes to blow!!
