Subject: Time for the Going Home Song From: GUEST,Jack Costello Date: 25 Nov 08 - 07:57 AM There was an interesting thread a whle back about the "Time For the Going Home Song", and I've recently come across a website that contains the lyrics, melody and midi of the tune. This is a terrific song to finish off an evening. Link to "The Time for the going home song" |

Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 25 Nov 08 - 12:02 PM See Lyr Req: The Going Home Song (Jim James), where words and tune were posted, and the author Jim James popped in to provide his original words and some info about himself. Jack's link is to Ian Woods' version. Mick |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: GUEST,WirralWanderer Date: 25 Nov 08 - 05:37 PM I was a big fan of Jim James when he used to play around Merseyside. After, the two beautiful tracks he recorded - with Raphael Callaghan, on the 1969 Gasoline album, I thought he would really take off. He wrote enough great material for a number of albums. Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Tangledwood Date: 26 Nov 08 - 05:34 PM Sorry, I was the guest - someone ate my cookie again. Running the midi file that Jack linked to through Melody Assistant came up with some alternative chords which I think sound good. G D F G In the night sky you can hear the geese cry Bm Am G It's time for the going home song. D F G With the gull on the shore sailing homeward once more Bm Am G It's time for the going home song. Em G D Travellers this wide world all over Em G Am D May your star follow you through the night Bm G F G With the storm clouds at bay at the end of the day Bm Am It's time for the going home, Bm C Time for the getting home, Bm Am G Time for the going home song. |

Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Tangledwood Date: 27 Nov 08 - 11:10 PM Ooops, C chord in the second last line should be F I think. |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Barbara Date: 28 Nov 08 - 01:54 AM I researched this a while back when it was posted the first time, and, as I recall the main difference between the Woods version and the author's version is that James uses the flatted seventh only in the verse, and Woods uses it both in the chorus and verse (which of course would change the chord you play). That makes Woods' tune modal. I prefer it with the flatted seventh myself, but it ain't how the author wrote it. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Tangledwood Date: 28 Nov 08 - 04:54 AM Are you able to post either or both of those versions please Barbara? The only version I'd seen was the gif in the OP link which is mainly G/F (and H). |

Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: GUEST Date: 28 Nov 08 - 07:00 AM With the gull on the shore sailing homeward one more ....What does that mean?? |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 28 Nov 08 - 07:07 AM Guest: Of course, it should be "once more", and the gull is a bird - a sea bird, which explains the poetic use of "sailing" rather than "flying". And, presumably, these birds move about a bit and then return to their "home". |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Barbara Date: 28 Nov 08 - 11:38 AM Let me check on the other computer later today -- that's where all my tune files reside -- and if I still have them I can either send you the midis if you PM me your email, or I can ask a Joeclone to post the links here. There is an ABC rendition of the tune in the other thread mentioned above, and that is the Ian Woods version. If you cut and paste that tune to Concertina.net , they have a tool there that will turn it into a midi or sheet music. I think the link is still in the mudcat links box. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Tangledwood Date: 28 Nov 08 - 05:14 PM Tremendous, thanks Barbara. I'll PM you the email. |
Subject: RE: Time for the Going Home Song From: Tangledwood Date: 28 Nov 08 - 05:33 PM I think that I've got the two versions now - the files linked to by OP Jack, and the old thread linked to by Mick. So if they are what you have no need to worry about sending anything, but any variations would be welcome. Thanks again, Mal |
